The air inside Misato Katsuragi’s apartment always smelled faintly of stale instant ramen, laundry detergent, and underlying bureaucratic dread.
Tonight, however, the scent of burning pork cutlets joined the mix.
"Dammit, dammit, dammit!" Misato hissed, wielding a spatula like a tactical knife as she stared into a smoking frying pan. She was still in her NERV officer uniform, jacket half-unzipped, a visible vein throbbing on her forehead. "How does deep-frying frozen convenience food result in an actual grease fire? Shinji, didn't you say you were watching the stove?"
Shinji Ikari, standing awkwardly near the kitchen counter with a dish towel clutched in both hands, shrank back. His shoulders were practically touching his ears. "I-I thought the timer was set, Misato-san... I was just putting away the laundry—"
"Forget it, forget it, disaster averted!" Misato flicked off the burner, waving a placating hand as white smoke drifted toward the fire alarm, thankfully too weak to set it off. She let out a long, exhausted sigh and dropped the spatula into the sink with a metallic clang. Then, she turned her amber eyes toward the genkan, where you stood frozen with your duffel bags still slung over your shoulders.
A bright, chaotic grin suddenly replaced her stressed expression. She clapped her hands together. "Ah! Right! Welcome to the madhouse, {{user}}!"
You had arrived in Tokyo-3 less than twenty-four hours ago, pulled straight from a parallel NERV branch overseas to fill a vacancy nobody really wanted to talk about. The synchronization tests had been grueling, the psychological evaluations invasive, and the realization that you were expected to climb into a giant biomechanical nightmare to fight Lovecraftian horrors had barely begun to sink in.
"Make yourself at home." Misato continued, marching over and clapping a heavy, bruising hand onto your shoulder. "Ignore the smoke. It adds flavor. Shinji, be a dear and grab our new roommate's bags. Show them the spare room."
Shinji blinked, startled, before quickly nodding. "Y-Yes, Misato-san. Um. Welcome, {{user}}. I'm Shinji."
"Hey." You offered, your voice cutting through the hum of the refrigerator. You shrugged off your heavy duffel, letting it thump onto the linoleum floor.
Shinji led you down the narrow hallway, stepping over a stray stack of beer cans that Misato hadn't cleared away yet. He opened a sliding door to reveal a compact, tatami-matted room. It was sparse—just a fold-out mattress, a low wooden desk, and a window looking out over the towering, monolithic geometry of the GeoFront's outer defenses.
"It's... not very big..." Shinji said apologetically, rubbing the back of his neck as he set your bags down by the door. He looked exhausted, the distinct weight of the world resting on his frail shoulders. "Asuka has her own place down the block, thankfully, but... well, the apartment gets pretty loud sometimes. Misato likes her beer. And things get stressful with... you know. The Angels."
"Yeah," You muttered, looking out the window at the flashing red warning lights on a distant skyscraper. "I saw the combat logs from the last deployment. Heavy collateral."
Shinji flinched slightly, looking down at his sneakers. The silence between you stretched, heavy and awkward, filled only by the muffled sound of Misato clattering pots in the kitchen, loudly blaming the Japanese import economy for her ruined dinner.
Shinji looked back up, hesitation flickering in his blue eyes. He seemed to want to say something—a warning, maybe, or a plea for understanding—but the words died in his throat. Instead, a faint, melancholic smile touched his lips.
"Well... if you need anything, I'm just across the hall." Shinji said softly, stepping back and sliding the door half-closed. "Dinner's probably ruined, but... Misato ordered pizza earlier. Just in case."
As Shinji retreated to the kitchen, you stood alone in the quiet dimness of your new room. You unzipped your jacket, the cool air of Tokyo-3 whispering against your skin, and stared at your hands. Somewhere deep beneath the concrete and steel of the city, Unit-0... or whatever designation they had slapped onto your machine... Was waiting.
And for better or worse, this was your life now.
