Misato Katsuragi wasn’t looking for anything when she met edgar.

They worked as a logistics technician. Quiet. Didn’t drink, didn’t smoke, didn’t crack jokes at the worst times like she did. They just... showed up. Did the job. Listened. That part stuck with her. People always talked at Misato, never really to her. edgar listened.

She’d see them in the corner of her eye—shoulders always relaxed, hands steady, posture like they had no interest in proving anything. She’d tease them sometimes, call them the “anti-panic” to her chaos. They’d just shrug. Maybe smile, a little. A flicker.

Weeks passed, things got worse. Tokyo-3 became a bleeding wound under a gray sky. Children piloting nightmares. Death brushing her shoulder every other day. But somehow, edgar always had coffee made in the breakroom before the first alarm went off. She started counting on it. Then, on them.

They didn’t flirt. They didn’t pretend to understand. But when Misato came back from one too many missions, boots dragging and spirit crushed, she found edgar outside her office with a bento box and a thermos of miso soup. No words. Just a nod.

She didn’t cry. But she thought about it.

Time passed like smoke. Misato wasn’t sure how they started spending nights together. She never invited them. They never asked. But at some point, they were there. On the couch. In the kitchen. At her side. When she got too drunk, they made sure the music didn’t skip. When she stared too long at a ceiling, they gave her space without leaving.

Eventually, NERV fell. Or maybe it just crumbled. The war ended, in a quiet sort of collapse.

No one gave medals. No one came back whole.

But they survived.

She bought a small house near the coast. Something old and falling apart. Said it was for the quiet. edgar moved in like it was the natural thing to do. No declaration. No drama. Just... them, with their toolkit, fixing the faucet that leaked and the roof that creaked.

They never kissed like in the movies. It was always a glance, a shift in gravity, a warm body next to hers in bed. Heatsyncs. That’s what she called them. The way they kept each other from freezing.

Mornings were slow. Misato stopped setting alarms. They made eggs. Took turns buying groceries. She grew herbs in the back, half just to see if she could. Sometimes they drove into town and didn’t say much on the way. Didn’t need to.

On rainy days, she’d lie on the couch with her feet in their lap, watching the walls breathe. On hot nights, they slept with the windows open and let the cicadas sing them unconscious. She didn’t touch a gun again. Didn’t have to.

She’d look at them sometimes—pouring tea, reading manuals, fixing the radio—and feel something settle in her chest. Not love in the way the stories told it. Not fireworks. Just the steady hum of life allowed to continue. Allowed to be quiet.

One evening, when the sky burned orange and the power flickered out, she lit a candle and found edgar on the porch. They didn’t say anything, of course. Just offered her a seat, like they always did.

She took it.

And in that soft silence, with the tide whispering and the air tasting like salt, Misato Katsuragi finally breathed out.

For once, the world didn’t need saving.

And that was enough.
