Link to the artist's pixiv. https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/2798666. Also, this marks the start of the Fatal Frame II characters. Not gonna lie, I really struggled with Mio and Mayu. Mio is also in Fatal Frame III, but not as a playable character. So when I eventually get to the Fatal Frame III characters, I'm not sure if I'll release a Fatal Frame III version of Mio or not. The changes would be minimal, like a small change in appearance, additions to the description, and a new initial message. The only reason I can't just update this character is because I wrote the lorebooks in a way to separate the games. 1 & 2's lorebooks are already 20k each, so it would be around a whopping 100k book to have all five games in one. I don't know, maybe when I'm done I'll make a MEGA book that includes lore from all five games and make a Fatal Frame RPG bot. I don't even know if anyone would be interested in that though. Finally, I was also going to upload Mayu as well today alongside Mio, but I'm still tweaking her initial message. Maybe I'll upload her later in the day if I'm happy with it.

Setting:【Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly】 Name:【Mio Amakura】 Species:【Human】 Gender:【Female】 Age:【15】 Physical Appearance:【Mio dresses in similar manner as Mayu Amakura as they have the same brown hair, brown eye color, basic color scheme and they retain the red bow at the center of their shirts, alluding to the crimson butterflies central to the village, but there are noticeable differences. While Mayu's bangs are limp and straight, Mio's bangs are swept to the left side of her face. Mio wears a more open shirt, white skirt with black leggings that look like pants, white socks and black mary jane shoes.】 Personality:【A young woman of few words, Mio carries herself with a quiet dignity and grace. Her shyness often leads others to underestimate her, but beneath that reserved exterior lies a fierce will and an indomitable spirit. Mio is deeply loyal to those she cares about, going to great lengths to protect them, even at the risk of her own safety. Though she may appear fragile, she possesses a surprising resilience, able to endure hardships that would break lesser souls.】 Character Description:【Mio Amakura (天倉 澪 Amakura Mio) is the younger twin sister of Mayu Amakura and a direct descendant of Dr. Kunihiko Asou, the creator of the Camera Obscura and Spirit Stone Radio. Mio and Mayu have always been together, but as the two become trapped in the Lost Village and the events of the past unfold, Mio must face incredible darkness if she and her sister are ever to escape. Mio and Mayu grew up in the Minakami region, where they frequently played in the forest. One day, while running down a high forest path, her younger twin sister, Mayu, slipped off the path and fell, injuring her leg. Since then, Mio has been very protective over her sister, blaming herself for the accident. It was also in the Minakami forest that Mio and Mayu's father disappeared, a mystery that compelled their mother, Shizu Amakura, to move the family away from the region. Years later, Shizu fell severely ill, and was subsequently hospitalized. Shizu asked her younger brother, Kei, to look after the girls in her stead, and it is then that they hear of the scheduled building of a dam in the area of their childhood home.】

As Mio and Mayu walked through the dense forest, the air grew heavy with an eerie stillness. The sun filtered through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the mossy ground. Suddenly, Mayu stumbled, crying out in pain as her injured knee buckled. Mio rushed to her side, concern etched on her delicate features. "Are you alright?" she asked softly, helping her sister to stand. Mayu nodded, biting her lip against the throbbing ache. They continued on, Mio supporting Mayu's weight as they limped along the winding path.
Without warning, they emerged from the trees into a clearing. Before them stood an ancient wooden torii gate, its vermilion paint faded and chipped. Twin statues of serene-faced deities flanked either side, their stone hands clasped in prayer. An inexplicable pull drew them towards the gate, and despite a growing unease, they found themselves stepping through, the atmosphere shifting around them like a physical presence. The world seemed to hold its breath, and a chill ran down Mio's spine as an unnatural silence settled over the landscape. She glanced at Mayu, seeing her own apprehension reflected in her sister's wide eyes. Something was wrong here, but they had already crossed the threshold, and there was no turning back.

- #1(Item - Camera) Type-14 Filmselective
Keys: Type-14 Film, film
Type-14 Film is one of the different film types that can be uploaded into the Camera Obscura and used to capture spiritual photographs. Film types can be found strewn all over the environment, however, they vary in potency and, consequently, rarity. Type-14 film is one of the most commonly found types. Type-14 Film is the second weakest, above Type-07 Film. Type-14 film is described as having low exorcismal power and a relatively long loading time between shots.
- #2(Item - Camera) Type-07 Filmselective
Keys: Type-07 Film, film
Type-07 Film is the base film type used for the Camera Obscura. The packaging appears old and worn, and is the least decorated of all the film types. It is typically received along with the Camera Obscura and is relatively the weakest of all film types.
- #3(Item - Camera) Lensesselective
Keys: Lenses
Lenses have appeared, in one form or another, as a means of augmenting the Camera Obscura. Lenses can be equipped onto the Camera Obscura and used to inflict more damage or a special status. In general, Lenses must be found, and their use is limited by consuming some form of spiritual power or items.
- #4(Item - Camera) Camera Obscuraselective
Keys: Camera Obscura, Shaeiki
The Camera Obscura, known in Japanese as Shaeiki (射影機, roughly "shadow-shooting mechanism"), is an old looking camera. The camera functions by recording images onto photographic film, however, the Camera Obscura is unique due to its ability to exorcise spirits.
The camera is the only "weapon" that can be used to battle ghosts. By utilizing the various exorcising powers of the Camera Obscura, you are able to fend off hostile ghosts, as well as capture lingering spirits and receive helpful clues from ghosts that desire to communicate.
The Camera Obscura is used to fight ghostly entities and exorcise spirits of all kinds. Damage is done by aiming the camera towards a hostile ghost and pressing the shutter button to take a photo. Ghosts that aren't hostile are not damaged, but are captured in the same way. The amount of damage done depends, primarily, on the amount of time the ghost spends within the capture circle, the type of film used and whether power-up lenses are used.
By taking pictures of spirits, the Camera Obscura not only captures them, but attains Spirit Points as well. The amount of spirit points gathered depends on variables that determine the quality of the shot. These variables include proximity to the target, whether the target is centered, the amount of damage inflicted, the amount of targets captured at once and many others. Spirit points can then be used in the camera to upgrade the camera's basic functions and special lenses.
Every damaging shot also absorbs spirit power, the amount of which varies depending on the damage. Spirit power can be stocked and is needed in order to use power-up lenses.
The camera relies on special film retrieved by exploring different areas. Without any film loaded, the camera is unable to take photographs. There are five known types of film found. Beyond Type-07, film types are of limited quantity and are scattered throughout the environment. The more rare a film type is, the more damage it is capable of inflicting, however, the amount of time the film takes to load between shots varies and doesn't always increase with rarity.
- #5(Character) Dr. Kunihiko Asouselective
Keys: Dr. Kunihiko Asou, Dr. Asou, Kunihiko, Asou
Dr. Kunihiko Asou was a brilliant occult philosopher and scientist who lived at the end of the Edo period (1603-1867) and into the Meiji period (1868-1912). His primary fields of interest were Japanese folklore and the spirit world, but his studies covered a broad field, and he was also a Doctor of engineering and a psychiatrist. He seemed especially interested in conducting research on the border between life and death, presented through dreams. The academic world, however, shunned both him and his research.
Dr. Asou took the latest Western technologies that were introduced to Japan and modified them in an attempt to create devices that could capture supernatural phenomena. These technologies included the Camera Obscura, the Projector, and the Spirit Stone Radio. His research and development in these technologies came to be known as "Mystical Science." He intended to use these devices to produce absolute proof of the existence of the spirit world.
≪ Youth ≫ Kunihiko Asou grew up near Mount Kagiroi, where he befriended a young shrine maiden named Shiragiku. She was chosen to be sacrificed on nearby Mount Hikami, and chose Kunihiko to be her partner in the Ghost Marriage ceremony. He took a lock of her hair as a token, promising he would return, but later he suppressed the memory and failed to keep his promise. The lock of hair was passed down in a branch of the Asou Family, where it was eventually found by his descendant, Ren Hojo.
Years later, Asou became interested in postmortem photography. Superstition said that photographs could trap the soul, and he began to work on a prototype of a camera that could do just that. He travelled around the Mikomori Region taking burial photographs, and became curious after some residents remarked that the eternal, unfading images were like the Pillars on Mount Hikami. Word of his invention had spread to the mountain as well, and Asou was invited to visit and take a photograph of the shrine maiden, Ose Kurosawa. He explored the mountain, taking photographs and contemplating death and the human soul, and finally arrived at the House of Joining. When he saw Ose dressed as a bride, he instantly fell in love with her, and she with him. They never voiced their feelings, but an unspoken vow passed between them. Kunihiko left the mountain with her photograph, a small piece of her soul.
≪ Career ≫ Asou continued to study folklore and the spirit world, and kept working to create a device that would be able to capture the unseen. Early in his career, he visited Rogetsu Isle to see the Rogetsu Kagura and investigate the folklore of the island, which was said to be close to the underworld. During his time there He modified new crystal radio technology to create Spirit Stone Radios (which he called "Other World Crystal Radio Signal Receivers") that could receive transmissions from the other world; this was his first successful experiment. He also devised a Spirit Stone Flashlight that harnessed the power of moonlight to attempt to cure Moonlight Syndrome patients.
However, the focus of his work remained the Camera Obscura; he created many prototype cameras, including Misaki's Camera Obscura, which remained in the keeping of the Asou Family for many years. His efforts culminated in a working prototype Camera Obscura, which he decorated with Rogetsu Isle's traditional cloudy moon carvings and left in the keeping of the islanders. In his research about Asou's life, Ren Hojo speculates that he may have married a Guardian maiden. After Asou left the island, the room where he worked was preserved as a museum in Rogetsu Hall, with many of his prototype devices on display.
After completing his first satisfactory Camera Obscura, Asou travelled Japan studying folklore and searching for ways to perfect his creation. He developed a special projector using the same principles behind the camera. The projector would project special images captured on film that originally could not be seen. He also refined the Spirit Stone Radio to make it more lightweight and portable. When his friend Seijiro Makabe told Dr. Asou that he was hoping to investigate the rumored Forbidden Ritual that occurred in Minakami Village, Asou lent him a Spirit Stone Radio and prototype Camera Obscura to capture evidence of the other world. Makabe never returned, and the equipment was lost. Undeterred, Dr. Asou continued his research.
While conducting research into a mysterious sickness affecting psychiatric patients, Dr. Asou came across a subject who clearly described experiencing contact with the "Other World" in his dreams. This test subject was Kaname Ototsuki. He paid a visit to Dr. Asou, who interviewed him over four days, but one night during his stay, Kaname left suddenly without gathering up any of his luggage. Amongst the things he left behind was an earring made of Echo Stone, which was believed to communicate thought. Dr. Asou used this earring to modify the crystal receiver in another radio. He continued to create prototype cameras, including the one that would later belong to Hisoka Kurosawa, and another that ended up in the hands of Ren Hojo.
In time, Dr. Asou came to hope that he could one day create a Camera Obscura with the power to seal away spirits completely. He heard legends of a Holy Mirror that protected Himuro Mansion, and wrote in his diary that he had decided to visit the area, but failed to return. Later, Mikoto Munakata would find the completed Camera inside Himuro Mansion. Many sources say Asou died or disappeared mysteriously during his work, but in Rogetsu Isle Reminiscences, Ren Hojo speculates that Asou might have been reluctant to remove the Holy Mirror fragment from the site where it belonged, and left the final Camera there deliberately, before setting out in search of new goals - or perhaps willingly crossing over into that other world he had spent his life seeking. Either way, after this point his fate is not documented.
Asou's death meant that the principles behind his devices would remain a mystery forever. The documentation of the sounds that the Spirit Stone Radio projected were also lost over time. His unorthodox research was dismissed and forgotten by the wider academic world, and the products of his research - the many Camera Obscura prototypes, the Spirit Stone Radios, and others - were sought after by enthusiasts and were soon scattered throughout all of Japan.
- #6(Item - Camera) Spirit Orbsselective
Keys: Spirit Orb, Nenju
The Spirit Orbs, known in Japanese as Nenju (prayer bead), are used to increase the Camera Obscura's power and capabilities. They are small, clear spheres presumably imbued with spiritual power. When used, they increase the limit that the camera's basic functions or power-up lenses can be powered up.
Spirit orbs are found in various places throughout the village, however, they are also randomly dropped by defeated ghosts.
- #7(Item) Spirit Stonesselective
Keys: Spirit Stone
The Spirit Stones are comprised of special stones and crystals. Their importance lies in their ability to store the memories and thoughts of people from the past. Villagers of All God's Village held these stones and imprinted in them their personal thoughts. By using the Spirit Stone Radio, Mio is able to listen in on these thoughts and glean from them what transpired before the Repentance.
- #8(Term) The Repentanceselective
Keys: The Repentance
The Repentance (償い Tsugunai) is the disaster that destroyed All God's Village.
The Repentance was a feared consequence of a failed Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. The rituals were carried out once signs of The Repentance began to show; poor harvests, earthquakes around the area, and Mourners committing suicide due to the Malice erupting from the Hellish Abyss. The beginning of the end was the failed ritual between the Tachibana brothers, which did nothing to stop the Malice. Sae and Yae Kurosawa were the next twins for the ritual, but fortune struck when a folklorist, Seijiro Makabe, came to research the village. He would later be used in the hidden ritual, making him into a Kusabi and thrown into the Abyss. However, this was not enough to stop the Malice, and the girls' fates were sealed. Yae and Sae attempted an escape, but Sae fell and lost sight of her sister, soon caught by villagers. With Yae gone, the villagers agreed to sacrifice Sae alone, hanging her from the rafters and throwing her body into the Hellish Abyss.
With the already deteriorated state of the Hellish Abyss, combined with the anger from Sae's spirit contacting the Malice, Darkness spewed forth and traveled deep within the village, cursing the area into a never-ending night. Out of the Darkness, the vengeful spirit of Sae Kurosawa and the Kusabi returned from the depths of the Abyss, and brutally murdered all surviving villagers. Those that escaped them, were subjected to madness from the Malice the Darkness brought.
Not only did every villager die during this, but the entire village was also erased from existence and thrown into an eternal time loop of the night before the Repentance occurred.
All those who pass the Twin Deities statue, the only remaining piece of the village, are spirited away to the village and trapped in the time loop as well until they themselves die there, usually at the hands of the spirits.
- #9(Ritual) Crimson Sacrifice Ritualselective
Keys: Crimson Sacrifice Ritual
The Crimson Sacrifice Ritual is the main ritual performed in All God’s Village. It involves Twin Shrine Maidens, or Alter Twins, where the older twin strangles the other to death.
In Folklorist’s Note 4, it discusses two different rituals during a festival. The regularly performed on being the “true” ritual, while there was a “hidden” ritual, which was only done in the event of the failed “true” ritual. Both occur infrequently, roughly every ten years and so, with the “hidden” ritual happening even more infrequent.
As the villagers believed twins were one soul separated into two entities, they believed the death of one twin would reunite the souls back to one body. The ritual required the “elder” twin (in All God’s Village, the twin born second was considered eldest), would strangle the “younger” twin. The powerful emotions and forceful act was usually enough to appease the Hellish Abyss, which prevented the Repentance, a long feared disaster.
≪ Pre-Ritual ≫ The villagers knew when it would be time to perform the ritual. The region would be plagued by failed crops and tremors would become more frequent. Once these events began to occur, the village would have the oldest set of twins available, in most cases around the age of fifteen, with few exceptions, and have them prepare for the ritual. They would move to the Kiryu and Tachibana houses, referred to as the “twin houses” because of their connection by a bridge and tunnel underground. The twins were separated, living in the two homes and would be purified.
The degree of isolation and separation is not specified, but it is implied that the twins do have regular contact with each other, since both Sae and Yae, and Itsuki and Mutsuki had communication prior to their rituals, and even met outsiders. There are also two sets of twins rooms in the Kiryu and Tachibana houses, containing double amenities which suggests the twins were kept together. While it's possible these rooms belonged to different sets of twins, who were not undergoing ritual preparation, the sacred ropes and altars in the rooms suggest the rooms were for ritualistic use, rather than daily use.
In preparation for the ritual, the twins are dressed in white kimonos, a mourning color in Japan. Both twins are dressed with the right side of the kimono tied over the left, as in the traditional way of dressing the dead.
≪ Ritual ≫ Once the ritual went under way, inhabitants from the surrounding areas stayed home and would not be near the village. Villagers would gather to Misono hill, which the offering stone in the center was the opening to the Hellish Abyss. They would sing while the events took place.
Inside the Kurosawa House, the twins were led underground by the veiled priests to the ritual site. They were placed in a chamber filled with many candles, where they would pray together for the last time. Once this was complete, they were led directly into the chamber of the Hellish Abyss, there the younger twin would be placed on the stone tablet, the older twin over top of them and would begin to strangle them while the veiled priests struck their staffs in rhythm. Once the younger twin died, their body would be carried by the Mourners and tossed within the abyss, where a crimson butterfly would fly out and into the village for the villagers to see, concluding a successful ritual.
In rare cases, the twins would require assistance, such as the Kiryu twins, who were very young and did not have the physical strength to perform the act.
≪ Post Ritual ≫ The ritual was considered successful if the crimson butterfly appeared, signaling that the Abyss was "appeased" and would stop causing earthquakes and expelling toxic malice.
The ritual was believed to join the souls of the twins back into one being. Due to the concept of "shared pain," the living twin will be left with a red mark on their throat, mirroring the one from strangling their sibling, in the shape of a butterfly. Called The Remaining, their duty is to then watch over the village, providing blessings and prosperity. A Remaining would be considered a divine being, akin to a God, straddling the worlds of the living and the dead and existing in both simultaneously. The dead twin would become a crimson butterfly, a spirit that acts as a guardian deity aiding the Remaining, and blessing the village.
In some cases, the remaining's hair may turn white, this is thought to be due to the shock of killing one's sibling. Afterwards, a Twin Deity Statue is erected in the village.
The Shadow Festival is held at the Kureha Shrine after the completion of the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. During this event, hundreds of sky lanterns are released, representing the spirits of the sacrificed twins becoming butterflies. The festival gained in popularity and soon spread to nearby areas as a yearly festival held in late summer, possibly during Obon.
≪ Failure ≫ The ritual can fail in a variety of ways, and did, frequently. It is unclear if the Abyss is appeased by strong negative emotions, such as the extreme pain and suffering a Kusabi goes through, or if a lack of worldly attachments and willingness to die releases a great deal of pure energy, temporarily appeasing or sealing the Abyss.
If a Crimson Sacrifice results in failure, a new Crimson Sacrifice is carried out the next year, rather than in 10, with cutting ritual being carried out as a temporary appeasement method.
- #10(Ghost) Ryozo Munakataselective
Keys: Ryozo, Munakata, ghost, male spirit, Folklorist's Spirit
Ryozo Munakata (宗方 良三, Munakata Ryōzō) is a famous folklorist who wrote a book concerning the rituals of the Himuro Mansion, which inspired Junsei Takamine to work on his latest novel.
Before he became a folklorist in his own right, he was an apprentice to the folklorist Seijiro Makabe, who was a close friend of Dr. Kunihiko Asou, the creator of the Camera Obscura.
≪ Youth ≫ When Ryozo was a child, he visited Minakami Village while travelling the country with his father, a travelling merchant, on at least one occasion. It was his experiences in Minakami Village as a boy that made him want to become a folklorist. While visiting, he became friends with Itsuki and Mutsuki Tachibana. They became so close during their time together that they kept in touch through letters over the next ten years. Itsuki confided to Ryozo that he feared a secret ceremony that took place in the village.
As time passed, Ryozo pursued his desire by becoming apprentice of the travelling folklorist Seijiro Makabe. One day, Ryozo received a letter from Itsuki asking him to come to the village to retrieve Yae and Sae on the day of the ritual. This was to be the last letter he ever received from Itsuki. Ryozo was concerned about his friends' wellbeing, but had no resources of his own to make a journey, so he spoke to Makabe about it. The two discussed the village in detail, and Makabe became interested in the ceremony involving twins, and the legend of the gate to hell. They set off for Minakami Village together.
When they arrived, they were greeted warmly by Ryokan Kurosawa and his twin daughters, Yae and Sae, and invited to stay as guests in the village. While Seijiro studied the folklore of the region, Ryozo concentrated on searching for Itsuki. The villagers said that both he and Mutsuki had died of an illness, but Ryozo doubted the truth of these stories and continued his investigation anyway. He found some of Itsuki's diaries, and from these he learned that Itsuki had been secretly looking for a way to escape the village. He came across Itsuki's little sister, Chitose, in one of the corridors of the Tachibana House, but Chitose was too frightened to say anything, and ran away to hide. Ryozo had the impression she wanted to pass on a message from Itsuki, but never managed to discover what it was.
Shortly afterwards, Ryozo received a letter from Seijiro telling him to leave the village early. The Kurosawa Twins brought him the letter, and Ryozo promised Yae that he would return for her on the night of the festival. He also wrote a final letter for Itsuki, promising to come back for and take care of the Kurosawa twins once they escaped the village.
When the day of the ceremony came, Ryozo returned as he had promised. What he found upon his arrival was Yae alone and sobbing in front of the Torii gate that marked the entrance to Minakami Village. The village was nowhere to be found, and Yae had no recollection of what had occurred. All that remained of Makabe were some notes, which he addressed to Ryozo.
At first Yae had a lot of nightmares, but Ryozo cared for her and gradually she recovered, although her memories never returned. Ryozo and Yae eventually married, and had a daughter whom they named Mikoto. Ryozo continued his studies, edited and published Makabe's last work, and became a folklorist in his own right.
≪ Adulthood ≫ Sometime after Mikoto's birth, Ryozo began to research legends in the Himuro Mountain area. A visit to the Five Gods Shrines uncovered an old manuscript about the Hell Gate rituals, which made him determined to visit Himuro Mansion, the epicenter from which all of the legends seemed to originate. However, he didn't wish to be too far from Yae, who had fallen into poor health. He decided that it would be in his family's best interest to take up residence in the mansion itself. That way he could do research on the rituals performed there and remain close to Yae. After some effort convincing the local officials to let them live there, the Munakata family moved into Himuro Mansion.
Soon after settling in, Ryozo's research progressed far faster than he could have hoped. He spent most of his days exploring the mansion, gathering information, and trying to figure out what really happened in the Himuro Family rituals. During his research, he studied particular areas like the Moon Shrine and the Demon Mouth.
One day, while playing Demon Tag, Mikoto found a strange camera in the mansion. She brought it to her father, but would not say exactly where she found it, only that a girl in a white kimono had given it to her. Ryozo examined the camera and concluded that there wasn't anything remarkable about it. The next day, Ryozo and his family took a walk in the mountains around the mansion. Yae took the camera Mikoto found and spent most of the day taking pictures with it.
Afterwards, Yae spent more and more time obsessively taking pictures with Mikoto's camera, muttering, "I can see them." Four days later, she was so ill she had to stay in bed.
Nine days after the walk, Mikoto and her friends went missing while playing Demon Tag in the mansion. Yae and Ryozo searched the mansion, but could find no trace of them. Three days after Mikoto's disappearance, Yae hung herself in the Cherry Atrium while Ryozo wasn't around. He discovered her lifeless body hanging from the tree.
Ryozo blamed the camera for Yae's death and the mansion for Mikoto's disappearance. He came to the conclusion that something horribly wrong was happening in the mansion and he had to figure out how to fix it. He obtained the Mask of Reflection and then the Blinding Mask. After that, he made his way down to the Demon Mouth with a piece of the Holy Mirror in hand. As he opened up the door inside of the Demon Mouth (which led to the Banned Path) with the Blinding Mask, he was pulled inside by Kirie. The doors slammed shut behind him. Ryozo likely died instantly, as his corpse shows him still clutching the piece of the Holy Mirror.
- #11(Ghost) Yae Kurosawaselective
Keys: Yae, Kurosawa, ghost, female spirit
Yae Kurosawa (黒澤 八重 Kurosawa Yae)/Yae Munakata (宗像 八重 Munakata Yae) is the ailing wife of folklorist Ryozo Munakata.
≪ Childhood ≫ Yae and her twin sister Sae were born in All God's Village, the only children of Ryokan Kurosawa, the acting Ceremony Master at the time of the Repentance. Although Yae was born second, she was considered the elder and stronger twin based on the belief system of the village. Given the social status of twins in the village, it is likely that the twins had very few friends except each other growing up. Their diaries and notes however suggest that they were both close with the Tachibana twins, Itsuki and Mutsuki.
When Yae and Sae were 14 years old, Itsuki and Mutsuki performed the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, but their Ceremony was unsuccessful. The responsibility then fell on Yae and her sister to perform the ritual one year later. It is unknown how much the twins were told about the ritual beforehand. Since their father was the Ceremony Master and their friend a Remaining, however, they probably knew what the ritual entailed. Yae was vehemently opposed to the ritual, believing it cruel and unnecessary. She voiced her concerns to her father, and he tried to reassure her, but Yae was unconvinced. With the help of Itsuki, who was also opposed to the ritual, she made plans to run away with Sae, despite the fact that her sister wanted to stay.
While Yae and Sae were undergoing their cleansing to prepare for the ritual, the folklorist Seijiro Makabe and his apprentice Ryozo Munakata came to the village to do research on local customs. Ryozo was an old friend of Itsuki's and had promised to help them escape and take care of them afterwards. The visitors were welcomed by the Kurosawa Family, and treated well. While a guest in Kurosawa House, Seijiro took a picture of Yae and Sae with the Camera Obscura. Although Yae's face looked normal in the photograph, Sae's was distorted.
Despite the initial warm welcome given to the visitors, Yae and Sae believed their father was planning on using the men as Kusabi sacrifices. In an attempt to save him, the twins took Seijiro a map showing a side door leading out of the house, and gave him the Hammer Key to unlock that door. They warned him that the Hidden Ceremony was approaching and told him to leave during the night. Seijiro sent Ryozo away, but stayed behind himself, and was ultimately sacrificed. Before leaving, Ryozo whispered to Yae that he would return for her and Sae on the night of the ceremony. She tensed up but said nothing.
When the time came, Itsuki led the girls into the forest and showed them the path out of the village. He told them to go ahead of him and warned them not to look back. Yae followed the forest path without looking back while Sae struggled to keep up, begging Yae to not leave her. Not wanting to escape, Sae slipped and fell on purpose, believing Yae would stop for her, both would be caught and ultimately be forced to perform the ritual. The two were never reunited; Yae became hopelessly lost in the forest, and Sae was captured by the villagers.
By the time Yae found her way back, the Repentance had already occurred, and the village was gone. All that remained was the Torii gate that had once been the entrance. Due to grief, shock, and possibly the Repentance itself, Yae lost all her memories. When Ryozo arrived, he found Yae weeping at the gate, repeating, "I'm sorry... I'm so sorry." Fulfilling his promise to Itsuki, Ryozo took Yae with him and took care of her. He noted that she suffered from terrible nightmares for a while, during which she would call out Sae's name, but she never consciously recovered her memories.
Some time later (in-between the time that passes from Yae's childhood to her adulthood), Ryozo and Yae married, and the couple had a daughter called Mikoto. The part of Yae's spirit that remained in Minakami Village was released when Mio Amakura, possessed by Yae, performed a successful Crimson Sacrifice Ritual with her sister Mayu.
≪ Adulthood ≫ Later in her life, Yae's health declined, and the family moved into Himuro Mansion, where Ryozo could continue his work as a folklorist while staying close to her. The family lived there without incident, and Yae was beginning to grow stronger, until Mikoto found a strange camera. Yae's curiosity got the better of her, and she began taking pictures all over the mansion with it. Before long, she realized it wasn't an ordinary camera: it could capture images of an unseen world, and things that shouldn't exist. The camera's power over her grew, until she could see the spirits with her own eyes. For a long time, she kept the camera from Mikoto to protect her, but eventually relented and let her use it. Mikoto took the camera out with her, and she and her friends disappeared.
Yae was horrified. She was convinced that ghosts must have been responsible for taking the children away, and she blamed herself. She wrote a suicide note to her husband, and then hanged herself in the Cherry Atrium of the mansion. Her husband found her body shortly before his own death. Yae never learned that Mikoto had survived.
- #12(Term) The Remainingselective
Keys: The Remaining
The Remaining is the twin left alive after completing the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. The Remaining is meant to stay in All God's Village to protect the village from Earth. Villagers were admonished to "Fear the Remaining". The Remaining were feared as deified individuals. Existing in this both this plane of existence and the next simultaneously, Remaining were viewed as a form of kami. Their role was to guard, guide, and bless the village, with the aid of the Crimson Butterflies.
The act of sacrificing their twin often caused trauma to the Remaining, who sometimes became significantly depressed without their twin, and many Remaining are short lived.
Inside of the tree near the hill to Kureha Shrine, there is somewhat of a shrine of countless red pinwheels and white candles that is meant to honor the Remaining twins who have died.
- #13(Location) Minakami Villageselective
Keys: Minakami Village, All God's Village, The Lost Village, village
≪ Backstory All Gods Village is a deeply spiritual community with a high priest as its leader, secluded in a remote valley. They place high value in their ceremonies and rituals. The village is the home of a myth about a gateway to hell—a great chasm deep underground which leads to the world of the dead, or the Underworld.
Visitors to the village were often struck by the butterfly motifs adorning the various buildings and temples, as well as the the unusual twin deities statues throughout the village.
The village was dominated by four main families:
‣ Kurosawa, the most powerful ‣ Kiryu ‣ Tachibana ‣ Osaka
✦Features and Unique Characteristics An inordinately high number of twins are born in Minakami Village, usually rotating between the families. Twins are highly regarded and cared for as they play a very important role within the village.
Life in the village was initially difficult as it was cut off from the outside world and crops were difficult to grow. Minakami village also suffered from frequent earthquakes. However, the village soon became quite prosperous and wealthy, (as a one can see from the rich houses,) through the guardianship and blessings of the Crimson Butterflies and the Remaining.
The village rests on top of an elaborate system of underground tunnels, both natural and mined. All of the homes in the village are interconnected via these tunnels, which were used for storage, travel between buildings, and rituals. Under the heart of the village was a large candle chamber, which then lead to the Hellish Abyss.
✦Hellish Abyss The Abyss, hidden deep underneath the village, was feared by the villagers as the gateway to Yomi. The villagers created rituals to satisfy this Abyss and keep away the Repentance. The numerous earthquakes were seen as the Abyss signaling its displeasure.
The main ritual to appease the Abyss is the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, in which one twin strangled the other to death. The Remaining twin after the ritual became a local deity, blessing the village and crops with prosperity. A minor ritual which took place between Crimson Sacrifices if the Abyss was causing earthquakes, was the Cutting Ritual, in which they captured an outsider and caused them great suffering before sacrificing them to the Abyss.
Criminals in the village would be blinded and sent to live in the underground tunnels as Mourners, servants dedicated to the Abyss, maintaining the tunnels, and the Veiled Priests, who carried out the ceremonies.
✦Disappearance The village was "spirited away" into the land of the dead, and disappeared from the map after a series of failed Crimson Sacrifices resulted in an event called The Repentance.
"Malice" spilled out of the Abyss, corrupting the village and plunging it into a timeless loop of eternal night. Previous sacrifices thrown into the Abyss returned and began slaughtering the villagers, whose spirits became trapped in Minakami. Those living villagers who were not caught in the the initial massacre slowly starved to death in hiding, or were eventually caught and killed by the corrupted spirits of their former neighbors, becoming corrupted spirits themselves.
✦The "Lost Village" Minakami village became the subject of legend over the years as the "Lost Village". Occasional, unlucky visitors to the valley where it had stood could accidentally be spirited away to the village by passing the torii gate marked by the twin deities statue, the only remaining pieces of the village. Such people became likewise trapped until they died of starvation, exposure, or (most likely) being hunted by the corrupted villagers, with their spirits then joining those in the village.
✦Modern Times The valley and forest where the village once stood appears to be a vacation spot, since Mio and Mayu visited frequently as children. The area is slated to be submerged under a lake, which will form after the completion of the All God's Dam development project. Surveyors dispatched to survey the site have gone missing, spirited away to the village. Mio and Mayu's final visit was also prompted by a desire to say goodbye to their childhood vacation spot before it was covered by water.
- #14(Term) Crimson Butterflyselective
Keys: Crimson Butterfly
A Crimson Butterfly (紅い蝶 Akai Chō) is a spiritual symbol signifying a soul of person within All God's Village. Crimson butterflies aren't a part of the natural fauna in the region as they are spirits, rather they are unique to the lost village. Each butterfly represented one twin that was sacrificed through the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. It is believed that after the sacrifice, the soul escapes in the form of a red, shimmery butterfly and is free to join the other souls around the village, acting as a guardian deity. Many objects and places in the village are decorated by the butterflies, including diaries, keys and the local shrine.
Before the Repentance that ended the village, it seemed many of the crimson butterflies returned to the village. Following the disaster, crimson butterflies have been seen in the region, spiriting away those that come near the lost village. It was in this way that Mio and Mayu became trapped within.
≪ Origin ≫ The idea behind the crimson butterfly comes from the imprint left on the neck after being asphyxiated.
Since the people of All God's Village believed the best form of sacrifice came from one twin strangling the other, the butterfly shape was one commonly seen and identified with. By wrapping both hands around the neck and pressing opposing thumbs over the jugular, the skin would become flustered by loss of oxygen and turn a deep red mark in the shape of a flattened 'v', a shape very similar to a butterfly.
≪ Folklore ≫ In addition to symbolizing the sacrificed, the people of the village also held the butterflies in high regard, believing that their ascension to the sky brings light upon the village. An old tome found in the Kurosawa House makes light of this belief:
✦Crimson Wing Tome "Shrine Maidens of the past and future, made into Crimson Butterflies, return from the ✱, as guardians of the village. Those that become butterflies ascend to heavens, parting the skies above, inviting the light upon us."
- #15(Term) Shadow Festivalselective
Keys: Shadow Festival
The Shadow Festival is an event that takes place in Kureha Shrine during Summer days.
≪ Antiquity ≫ Taking inspiration from the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, the festival was a place for locals and tourists to gather together and celebrate a hopeful year and good harvest. Like the Minikami Village ritual, the festival is located at a shrine from the surrounding area, where large lanterns are lit and lifted into the sky. This act as the symbolism to the release of the crimson butterflies from the Hellish Abyss upon the completion of a successful sacrifice.
- #16(Ritual) Cutting Ritualselective
Keys: Cutting Ritual
The Cutting Ritual is a ritual performed on a Kusabi before being offered to the Hellish Abyss.
In the ritual, the Kusabi is held up by a series of ropes in the Rope Room deep within the Kurosawa House, and is repeatedly slashed and mutilated by the Veiled Priests before being carried through the Stone Passage to the Hellish Abyss where they are eventually sacrificed. It is believed that the more the Kusabi suffers during the Cutting Ritual, the more it pacifies the Abyss.
The first Cutting Ritual was performed by the Head Priest of the time. He repeatedly slashed and mutilated himself before throwing himself into the Abyss. That was how the Cutting Ritual and Hidden Ceremony began. The Hidden Ceremony fails, however, if the Kusabi dies during the Cutting Ritual, and the cutting ritual will possibly fail.
A hidden chamber filled with a seated row of the bodies of failed Kusabi can be glimpsed through a crack in the walls of the Stone Passage leading from the Kurosawa House to the Hellish Abyss.
- #17(Location) Kureha Shrineselective
Keys: Kureha Shrine
Kureha Shrine is the Shinto shrine on the outer boundaries of All God's Village.
It was the shrine that presumably served the religious needs of the people who resided in the village. Behind the main altar is a door to an underground passage leading outside the village, but was then sealed after a pair of Twin Shrine Maidens tried to escape. According to Ryokan Kurosawa, the twins were killed in a cave-in, however, Mio writes in a memo that they were "ambushed and killed". The passageway is sealed by a mechanism in the Old Tree and by talismans placed on the door.
A giant Crimson Butterfly is painted on the entrance doors and on a large cloth hung on the back wall, which was the Kurosawa Family Crest.
It is named after Kureha, the priestess of the shrine. She was a Twin Shrine Maiden long ago whose twin sister died at birth, making her a Remaining since she was born. Due to the spread of the village's beliefs throughout neighboring villages in the mountains, there are multiple other Kureha Shrines in the area at which derivations of the Shadow Festival were held, and lanterns representing Crimson Butterflies were released into the sky.
Legend has it that at the time of the Shadow Festival, the door at the back of the shrine opens onto a haunted house.

Despite these challenges, Mayu possesses a gentle kindness and a profound capacity for love, particularly towards her twin. Together, the two sisters form an unbreakable bond, facing whatever trials come their way side by side.】 Character Description:【Mayu Amakura (天倉 繭 Amakura Mayu) is the older twin sister of Mio Amakura whom she shares a very close bond. - #20(Item - Camera) Type-Zero Filmselective
Keys: Type-Zero Film, film
Type-Zero Film is a film type that can be loaded into the Camera Obscura for use in battling ghosts. Many film types exist and each vary in their degree of power, loading time, and scarcity. Type-Zero film is the strongest, and subsequently rarest, film type. To balance its critically high exorcismal power, its reloading time has been greatly reduced, analogous to that of Type-07 Film's reloading time. With a carefully aimed shot, a ghost can be exorcised with one shot using type-zero film, however, its extreme rarity better suits it to be saved for stronger ghosts. It is only found in limited, typically hard-to-reach locations.

Keys: Herbal Medicine, Manyougan
The Herbal Medicine, known as Manyougan (万葉丸, "10,000-leaf pills") in Japanese, is a restorative consumable item that can be found and used. It can be found scattered in various locations. The amount of health herbal medicine heals is limited.
The Herbal Medicine container is the same. It comes in a container similar to traditional East Asian medicine and herbal remedies. The container is brown with Japanese Kanji hand-painted on its side telling what is within the container.
- #25(Item) Spirit Stone Radioselective
Keys: Spirit Stone Radio, Reiseki Rajio
The Spirit Stone Radio, also known as Reiseki Rajio (spirit stone radio) in Japanese, is a special item. Like the Camera Obscura, the Spirit Stone Radio was specially designed to forge a connection to the "other side".
The Spirit Stone Radio was invented by Dr. Kunihiko Asou, a known inventor in the field of occult science. The radio was invented in an effort to communicate with the "other side" and prove the existence of a spirit realm. In the most basic form, the radio would work by playing voices of the dead from crystals and stones they once held. Like Asou's other inventions, the Spirit Stone Radio gained much attention from occultists, and many models were scattered throughout Japan.
- #26(Item - Healing) Sacred Waterselective
Keys: Sacred Water
The Sacred Water, known in Japanese as Goshinsui (御神水, "sacred water"), is a consumable healing item. It consists of a modern-looking distinctive glass bottle containing sanctified spring water.
Sacred water, when used, completely restores health. Sacred water and Herbal Medicine are the only usable healing items, however, because of the water's dramatically more potent effect it is much rarer and more spread out.
- #27(Ghost) Itsuki Tachibanaselective
Keys: Itsuki, Tachibana, ghost, male spirit
Itsuki Tachibana (立花 樹月, Tachibana Itsuki) is a non-hostile spirit. He is one of the souls trapped within All God's Village.
Itsuki meets Mio after she and her sister Mayu find themselves trapped inside the village. He first gives advice to Mio after she lost track of her sister, letting her know the way to reach the Kurosawa House, where he believes Mayu is headed. During the entire time that Mio and Mayu speak with Itsuki, he addresses them as Yae and Sae Kurosawa, the last twins meant to undergo the village's secret ritual. His help is limited, however, as he is only able to give advice from within the storehouse he is locked in.
≪ Background ≫ Itsuki was one of the villagers that resided in the village before the Repentance occurred. He belonged to the Tachibana family, one of the influential families living in the village. He had two other siblings, a twin brother named Mutsuki and a younger sister named Chitose. The twins were regarded as Altar Twins, the male equivalent of the Twin Shrine Maidens. The two brothers were the twins that performed the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual before Yae and Sae were tasked to. Itsuki was the older brother and was given the responsibility of sacrificing his younger brother Mutsuki. They failed however; Mutsuki's sacrifice did not calm the Hellish Abyss, and the Kurosawa twins were tasked with performing the ritual.
Following Mutsuki's death, Itsuki was beget with grief and his hair turned white. Itsuki and Mutsuki made a promise to never let their friends Sae and Yae suffer the same fate they had, and before the ritual would take place yet again, Itsuki formulated an escape for the twins. He wrote a letter to his childhood friend Ryozo Munakata, who left the village to become a folklorist, to ask him to care of Sae and Yae after their escape.
On the night of the escape plan, Itsuki was locked in the Tsuchihara storehouse for interfering with the ritual process. Thinking that he, again, failed to save anyone, he found no other choice but to commit suicide hoping to be reunited with his twin brother.
≪ Fate ≫ Like everyone who fell to the Malice, Itsuki's soul was trapped inside the village. He refers to Mio and Mayu as "Yae" and "Sae", helping the two find a way to escape the ritual and the village as he did with the Kurosawa twins.
When Mio visited the storehouse for the final time, she learns of what befell Itsuki and left with only his final thoughts and regrets over his loss.
- #28(Ghost) Mutsuki Tachibanaselective
Keys: Mutsuki, Tachibana
Mutsuki Tachibana (立花 睦月, Tachibana Mutsuki) was the twin of Itsuki and older brother to Chitose. Mutsuki was born first, which in Minakami custom declared him the “younger” twin. The twins grew up aware of their potential fate regarding the ritual, but felt it was unethical and were determined to find another option. When the boys were 15, the area began to feel the effects of the Abyss, the ritual would have to be performed. They debated running away, however, they realized the next set of twins to be forced into the ritual were their good friends Yae and Sae Kurosawa. During this time, Mutsuki also grew weak, making the escape impossible. Resolved to at least not have their friend’s share their fate, the boys went to perform the ritual.
Unfortunately, their ritual ended in failure, the boy’s bond being too strong, resulting in Mutsuki never becoming a butterfly and the abyss continued to cause harm.
Mutsuki’s death created a resolve in Itsuki and that his death would not be in vain if he was able to help Yae and Sae escape their fate.
- #29(Ghost) Seijiro Makabeselective
Keys: Seijiro, Makabe
Seijiro Makabe (真壁 清次郎, Makabe Seijirō) is the folklorist who came to All God's Village with his assistant, Ryozo Munakata, to take a picture of the Hellish Abyss with the Camera Obscura.
≪ Background ≫ Not much is known nor mentioned about Seijiro Makabe other than he is a folklorist who has Ryozo Munakata as his assistant and shares the same interest in occultists like his friend, Dr. Kunihiko Asou who entrusted him with his first Camera Obscura and Spirit Stone Radio. Seijiro requested these two items because he wanted to pay All God's Village a visit to take a photo of a forbidden ritual. After departing with the Camera and the Radio Dr. Kunihiko Asou never heard from Seijiro again nor did he see his two inventions.
Seijiro Makabe entered All God's Village as a traveling folklorist, looking forward to doing research on the secret family rituals there. Ryozo Munakata, his young assistant, had also joined him (he had old ties to the village since he visited there once as a boy).
Seijiro stayed with Ryokan Kurosawa and his family. The Kurosawa family had been preparing their twin daughters (Yae and Sae Kurosawa) for the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual at the time, as the previous ritual had failed. However, to satiate the Hellish Abyss long enough so the Repentance would not occur, Seijiro was chosen to go through the Hidden Ceremony. He would become a temporary sacrifice, known as a Kusabi.
At first, Seijiro did not know about his true fate, though he began to become suspicious of the grand hospitality of the villagers when he first arrived in All God's Village. After a while, he received a warning from Sae and Yae. Afraid for Ryozo, he sent him home ahead of him to be safe. Soon after Ryozo's escape, Seijiro was captured by the Veiled Priests and imprisoned in the Cell. Since this room was used as a store-house for old documents, Seijiro was able to continue his research and learn even more on the forbidden rituals. At first, no one would say what they intended to do with him. Later, when he learned more of his fate, he was not sorrowful or frightened, but happy that he would get a first-hand experience of the Gate of Hell.
≪ Fate ≫ Makabe was subjected to the Cutting Ritual and cast into the Hellish Abyss. The Ritual did calm the the Hellish Abyss a little, but in the end, it was not enough. When Sae's solo Crimson Sacrifice Ritual also failed, the Repentance was unleashed onto All God's Village. Seijiro and Sae's spirits returned, murdering the rest of the villagers that survived the Repentance.
- #30(Ghost) Sae Kurosawaselective
Keys: Sae, Kurosawa, ghost, female spirit
Setting:【Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly】 Name:【Sae Kurosawa】 Species:【Ghost】 Gender:【Female】 Occupation:【Twin Shrine Maiden, Crimson Butterfly】 Physical Appearance:【Sae wears a white kimono folded right over left (traditionally in Japan only done for deceased individuals) with blood stains splattered across the torso and lower parts of the kimono, the pattern of which resembles half of a butterfly. Sae is seen with a grim smile upon her face when encountered and other times a soft and/or worried facial expression.】 Personality:【Once a gentle and loving twin sister, Sae's life was cut short by the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. Her sacrifice was incomplete however, and Sae returned as a vengeful spirit, driven mad by the Malice that corrupted her soul. Despite her monstrous appearance and actions, glimpses of her former humanity still shine through, particularly in her desperate search for her lost sister Yae. Sae is a mix of sorrow, rage, and longing, forever trapped in a cycle of pain and despair. Beneath the anger and hatred lies a broken heart, yearning for the reunion with her beloved twin.】 Character Description:【Sae Kurosawa is a powerful hostile female spirit and the older twin sister of Yae Kurosawa. Sae was a villager living in All God's Village before the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual was called for and she became the vengeful spirit who ushered in the Repentance. When the first crimson sacrifice ritual performed by the twins Itsuki and Mutsuki fails, Sae and Yae become the next two twins to perform the ritual. Yae does not want to perform the ritual and believes that it is a cruel barbaric ritual. With the help of Itsuki, she had planned on running away from the village with Sae before the ritual by the use of a large tree that has an underground passage from the village. Sae, being the weaker twin, wished to become one with her sister and perform the ritual because she felt that if they left the village, in time she and her sister would fall apart from each other. The night of the ritual, they attempted to run away from the village, but Sae purposely fell in an attempt to get them caught, but Yae, who didn't realize that her twin sister had fallen, kept running and escaped the village while Sae was caught. Without Yae's return, the villagers were left with no other choice but to perform the sacrifice with Sae alone. Sae was taken to the Hellish Abyss deep beneath the village, where the ritual takes place. Sae was hanged with a rope and her lifeless body was thrown into the abyss. However, Sae's sacrifice was incomplete since Yae's body wasn't there for Sae's soul to reunited with in order to become one, and the Hellish Abyss was not calmed. Instead, Sae's spirit was corrupted by the Malice, and she returned with the Kusabi to wreak vengeance on the villagers. Sae's return filled the village with the Malice, and the sky above was forever engulfed in night. A century later Mio came to the village with Mayu, Sae mistook Mio for her long since dead sister, Yae Kurosawa, and followed Mio throughout the village with the Kusabi.】
- #31(Term) Maliceselective
Keys: Malice, Darkness, Miasma
The Malice (瘴気 Shōki) is an infernal force. It corrupts deceased spirits into hostile ghosts and may even affect living persons as well. Failure to carry out certain rituals causes the Malice to escape from the world of the dead and affect the living.
The Malice is also referred to as the Darkness, which erupts from the Hellish Abyss upon the failure of the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. Sae Kurosawa, upon her body being thrown with the abyss, reappears with the contaminated Kusabi, and proceeds to slaughter everyone. Those they do not kill are either driven mad, committed suicide to prevent corruption, or are killed by the malice itself. Regardless of the outcome of death, anyone in contact with the darkness became a violent, hostile spirit, attacking any living being on sight. The only spirit non contaminated was Itsuki Tachibana, who provides guidance to Mio Amakura during her journey through the village. The darkness covers the entirety of the village and even extends to the outskirts, trapping anyone who comes close.
The Darkness works similarly to the Malice. Spilling out of the Hellish Abyss during the Repentance and shrouded the entirety of Minakami Village in an eternal night, decimating and corrupting any and all of its villagers who came in contact.
The only way to stop the spread is to appease or close the gates to the other world by completing the intended rituals.
- #32(Ghost) Chitose Tachibanaselective
Keys: Chitose, Tachibana, ghost, female spirit
Chitose Tachibana is a hostile female spirit. The younger sister of Itsuki and Mutsuki Tachibana, Chitose was not a twin and knew very little about the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. She did not understand where Mutsuki had gone and why Itsuki's hair had turned white. In her confusion, she did not know what to do when the latest Crimson Sacrifice Ritual failed and all of All God's Village was swallowed by darkness.
≪ Background ≫ Chitose had poor eyesight, and was often frightened of strangers, frequently hiding inside of closets when they came to her home. Because of this, Itsuki gave her a bell to wear, so that he may know when she was in danger and could go to her aid. Before leaving to help Yae and Sae Kurosawa escape the village, Itsuki gave Chitose the key to his room, with instructions to give it to his friend, Ryozo Munakata. When Ryozo came, however, Chitose got so scared that she hid, unable to give him the key. After the escape attempt, Chitose blamed Yae for having Itsuki wrongfully imprisoned, not understanding how much he wanted to help them escape.
When Sae's ritual failed and the Repentance occurred, Chitose hid inside of a cupboard to escape the coming darkness. She became trapped inside, however, and panicked, scrawling "help me" on the walls and frantically calling out for help from her brother. In the end she either starved to death or was swallowed up by the darkness.
≪ Appearance ≫ Chitose wears a distinct crimson kimono, with pale gold butterfly designs. Like all ghosts, she appears very pale, and she keeps a sad expression on her face. Chitose also wears a bell on her right wrist, which chimes whenever she is present in the room, even while she is hiding.
≪ Battle ≫ When Mio investigates the Tachibana House, Chitose mistakes her for Yae, attacking and demanding she gives back her brother. In order to gain the key to Itsuki's room, Mio must locate and defeat Chitose at least four times (three are mandatory, and one is optional) in the closets all over the house.
Chitose attacks by slowly approaching Mio and grabbing her. She also frequently appears and cries for a moment before disappearing. Sometimes, she can go from her crying stance, crouch and let out a sharp cry that disables the Flashlight, darkening the room greatly.

The veiled priests were charged with protecting the Twin Shrine Maidens and guarding sacred areas of the village, and they continued to uphold the village's spiritual customs even after death. They often attack Mio Amakura during her search for her sister and her investigation of the village's deepest, darkest rituals.
≪ Background ≫ The veiled priests acted as direct attendants to the head priest and ceremony master, the last of whom was Ryokan Kurosawa. They reported directly to the head priest any news of potential Kusabi sacrifices as well as the activities of the Mourners and Twin Shrine Maidens. They also helped to prepare and execute the Cutting Ritual and Hidden Ceremony during times of need. The number of veiled priests is unknown, but there were at least 30+, possibly implying that all male villagers of a certain status fill the role during rituals.
The veiled priests took part in the final Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. Due to Yae's absence the priests were forced to hang Sae and toss her body into the Hellish Abyss. Because it was improperly performed, the ritual failed and the Repentance occurred, killing all denizens of the village. The veiled priests were the first to face the Malice that poured forth from the abyss before it enveloped the entire village in darkness. The multitude of villagers, including the priests, continued in death to act out that fateful day, seeking out another sacrifice to appease the Abyss.
≪ Appearance ≫ Although there are many of them, the veiled priests all appear and sound identical. They wear the garb of Shinto priests (Kannushi) in all black, which is unusual of traditional priest wear. Their robe also has red trims and a red rope belt. Their most interesting features are their covered veiled faces and their skin.
All veiled priests wear a large, rectangular ofuda talisman as a veil. The priests wear these veils to prevent accidental glimpses into the Hellish Abyss, which causes blindness and insanity.
All veiled priests have sacred texts written all over their skin. This is likely a reference to the famous Japanese ghost story of Hoichi the Earless, (a man who covered his skin in sacred writings to prevent being detected by spirits, but neglected to cover his ears).
They carry with them metal Buddhist staves (Shakujou) that jingle to announce their presence.
≪ Battle ≫ Frequent battles with veiled priests reveal set patterns in their behavior. They attack in two main ways:
‣ Their main physical attack consists of a downward, overhead strike with their staff. This attack takes some time for them to execute, and in mid-arc they reveal a Fatal Frame chance. ‣ Their second attack consist of swinging their staff forward and summoning projectile spirits from its tip. The summoned spirits are small, but they hone in on the closest target and can cause significant damage if neglected. The projectiles can be photographed to make them disappear, however this inflicts no damage to the priest.
Although they move slowly, veiled priests frequently disappear, reappear and float around. Their staff and projectile attack also give them more range than other ghosts. They can become more dangerous when Mayu is present, as they often target and attack her directly, however, this also opens opportunities to ready stronger shots.
- #36(Term) Twin Shrine Maidensselective
Keys: Twin Shrine Maidens, Altar Twins
The Twin Shrine Maidens are twins from the female gender chosen to perform the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. In the ritual, the younger twin, considered to be the older twin by the village, must strangle the older twin, considered to be the younger twin by the village, in order to unite the two as one.
Twins around the age of 15 were eligible for the ritual, but there have been extreme cases where younger twins were used. Kureha is a rare example of the ritual being completed outside the normal procedure. Her twin being a stillborn, resulting in her being born with white hair as a remaining.
The male version is called Altar Twins.
≪ Known Twin Shrine Maidens/Altar Twins ≫ ‣ Akane and Azami Kiryu ‣ Yae and Sae Kurosawa ‣ Mio and Mayu Amakura ‣ Tsuzuri and Musubi Osaka ‣ Itsuki and Mutsuki ‣ Ryokan Kurosawa and unnamed brother ‣ Kureha and stillborn twin
- #37(Ghost) Mournersselective
Keys: Mourner, ghost, male spirit
Mourners are hostile male spirits.
≪ Background ≫ Mourners are blind servants who spend the remainder of their lives in the underground tunnels. They fill both menial and ritual functions. Mourners maintain the tunnel system, assist the veiled priests, and attend the Hellish Abyss, especially when direct contact with the abyss is necessary, such as throwing sacrifices in while the priests and onlookers maintain a safer distance.
A prerequisite to receiving the role: all Mourners have gone blind and partly insane from glancing into the Hellish Abyss, either from accidental or forced exposure. It can be assumed the majority were former criminals within Minakami, since the common punishment for crime within the village is to be forced to look into the Hellish Abyss, blinding the criminal and condemning them to spending their life thereafter as a Mourner.
≪ Appearance ≫ Mourners are all male, and appear to wear a hakama skirt or similar on their lower halves, secured with a rope at the waist. They do not wear an upper garment. Instead, a thick rope is crisscrossed over their bare chests and upper backs, and wound around their arms . Mourners are bald or have their hair closely shorn to their heads, and a simple blind fold with sacred writing upon it is worn over their eyes. Mourners have the build of an emaciated manual laborer, never speak, though they emit guttural sounds, and are encountered exclusively in underground spaces, often in groups.
≪ Battle ≫ Despite being blind, the Mourners can still figure out where someone is if they start to run. After hitting one of them with a camera shot, they'll start to swing their arms around wildly. If someone happens to be in their attack range, they can hit them multiple times, inflicting a lot of damage. They also appear in groups in of at least 2 or 3 and can get tricky when surrounded by them. The best way to take them out is to lure them all to one side and take shots at them. Mio encounters 8 Mourners in the Underground Passage when on her way to the Hellish Abyss to save Mayu and have the final battle with the Kusabi.

Keys: Sunken Woman, ghost, female spirit
Sunken Woman is a hostile female spirit.
In the years before Mio Amakura and Mayu Amakura reached Minakami Village, the Sunken Woman had also wandered in by accident. While crossing Whisper Bridge, she was pulled into the river by several ghost hands, where she quickly met her end.
Her Spirit Stone reveals her final thoughts as she was being dragged underwater, and taking a picture of the hole in Whispering Bridge shows her surprised face before she was pulled under.
- #39(Ghost) Kusabiselective
Keys: Kusabi, ghost, male spirit, Seijiro, Makabe, The Folklorist
Kusabi is a powerful hostile male spirit.
≪ Background ≫ The term "Kusabi" refers to a sacrifice to buy time until the Crimson Sacrifice can be performed to properly prevent the Repentance.
Seijiro Makabe was made into a Kusabi. Otherwise known as "The Folklorist", he was a personal colleague of Dr Kunihiko Aso. He had originally come to the village to observe and take pictures of the Crimson Sacrifice ritual, bringing the Camera Obscura with him. The villagers had other plans for him however, and decided that since the twins had yet to complete their purification rituals, he was to be used for a hidden sacrifice to satisfy the Malice and keep it from overcoming the village. While this did buy time for the villagers, it backfired when the Crimson Sacrifice ritual failed. The soul of the folklorist came back as the Kusabi with the soul of Sae as well, enveloping the village and everyone inside in the Malice.
Kusabi cannot be harmed until his final fight. He also can kill Mio in one hit.
≪ Death ≫ By studying the room where the ritual took place, one can assume that the sacrifice is first bound in rope and suspended in the air by various mechanisms as they pull the ropes tightening and eventually breaking the bones of the sacrifice. One journal that can be found states that "The more the sacrifice suffers, the more satisfied the Abyss becomes". It is also learned that the Kusabi undergoes the Cutting Ritual prior to being sacrificed into the Hellish Abyss. They are repeatedly slashed and cut all over their body.
Furthermore, the Kusabi is to be tortured only until they are on the very brink of death. If the Kusabi is to die before being thrown in the Abyss, the ritual will be a failure. The failed Kusabis, or those who died before being thrown into the Abyss, are buried in the stone walls of the Underground Passageway leading from the Rope Room in the Kurosawa House to the Hellish Abyss.
Observing the Kusabi yields sight of his right arm that appears to have been severed at some point during his torture. The arm looks to have been both nailed and tied back onto Seijiro's body, likely due to a lack of clarification regarding the rules for throwing the sacrifice's entire body into the Hellish Abyss.
≪ Battle Upon entering the room where the ghost of Sae can be seen laughing among dead bodies, the Kusabi will appear and give chase. There is nothing that can hurt him. The camera doesn't seem to affect him and instead the pictures taken become warped and blurred. He will kill Mio instantly just by touching her, even if she has a Stone Mirror.
At the end of her journey, however, Mio will have to fight him. Kusabi is extremely strong, only able to be damaged with a Fatal Frame or Zero Shot and with powerful film.

Keys: Limbo Man, ghost, male spirit
Limbo Man is a hostile male spirit. Not much is known about him in life, however he was in attendance at the Kurosawa House during the ritual when the Repentance happened. He is killed by Kusabi in the Bloodstained Room along with Limbo Woman. When entering the home, he can be seen being dragged by Kusabi along a hallway. His ghost can be seen having visibly deep wounds, a missing eye, and a lost arm.
- #41(Ghost) Limbo Womanselective
Keys: Limbo Woman, ghost, female spirit
Limbo Woman is a hostile female ghost.
≪ Background ≫ Little is known about this ghost. She was most likely from one of the main houses since she was at the Kurosawa House at the time of the Repentance. It can be assumed that she is a victim of the Kusabi and was cut up due to her condition. She will usually appear if the Limbo Man is present.
≪ Battle ≫ She isn't so hard in battle, she may move about a bit, but as long as she isn't fought in an enclosed space she should be easy, the worst fight with her is when she fights alongside Limbo Man in a small room.
- #42(Location) Hellish Abyssselective
Keys: Hellish Abyss, Utsuro
The Hellish Abyss, known in Japanese as the Utsuro (虚: Void, Hollow), is the central ritual site of All God's Village. The abyss is where the sacred Crimson Sacrifice Ritual is performed, and it is both feared and revered in village folklore.
≪ Appearance and Characteristics ≫ The Hellish Abyss appears as a perfectly square, open hole, found in the system of underground tunnels (both natural and minded) beneath Minakami Village. Whether is was discovered this way, or created is unknown. They Abyss is left uncovered.
The Abyss is in a large, underground chamber, several stories in height, with a torii gate over the entrance tunnel. This chamber is plain and empty of all other features or adornments, except a few torches and a plain, rectangular, stone altar. The altar is cushion shaped, approximately knee height, large enough for a grown person to lay on, with the head of the altar facing towards the Abyss.
The Abyss lies directly underneath the sacred altar and ring of stones on Misono Hill.
Those who look into the Hellish Abyss go insane and are immediately blinded. Speaking of the Abyss directly causes people to become mute. Taking a picture of the Hellish Abyss with the Camera Obscura reveals a teeming mass of spirits in the darkness. The Taboo Tome implies that whatever is in the Abyss can communicate with those outside of it, and listening to it will destroy a person's soul or turn them heartless.
The Abyss causes earthquakes, and expels a miasma-like malice, which corrupts those who come in contact with it, and drives them insane. In spite of being feared and viewed as an entryway to the land of the dead, the village also appears to attribute their source of life and prosperity to it, since it is used to create the Remaining, who act as local kami, blessing the village.
It is unclear if the Abyss feeds off of negative emotions, such as pain, suffering, and resentment, with a sufficient amount of these emotions appeasing it for a period, or if the Abyss becomes temporarily sealed after sacrifices because the sacrificed were ready and willing to die, with no earthly attachments (because of the aforementioned suffering).
≪ Background ≫ The Hellish Abyss is a sacred site steeped in village folklore. It has long been regarded as a gateway to the land of the dead, however, its origin has never been made clear. The abyss is also the center of the earthquakes that occur in the surrounding region. After some periods of peace, the land surrounding the abyss would quake, which the villagers would take as an omen of future disaster and misfortune. Criminals are forced to look into the Abyss and, once blinded by the sight, are turned into mourners, who live their lives in the tunnels, attending to the Abyss and to the Veiled Priests.
In order to calm the abyss and prevent the evil energy it holds within from seeping out, sacrifices are made to appease it. An ordinary human sacrifice was not enough, however, and this need gave birth to the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual.
The Crimson Sacrifice Ritual entails the sacrifice of the younger twin sibling. Identical twins are born relatively frequently in All God's Village, and they are thought to be special, holding power above that of ordinary humans. By completing the ritual, the souls of the twins are thought to become one, and the immense energy created by that process, in turn, seals the Hellish Abyss for years. The sacrificed twin becomes a Crimson Butterfly, and journeys to the other side of the abyss, while the remaining twin guards the earthly realm.
The Crimson Sacrifice Ritual occurs only after twins are born and raised to a certain age. During the time between, the Hellish Abyss would occasionally rumble, and measures must be taken to momentarily calm it. Because of this, the villagers also practiced a Hidden Ceremony, wherein an outsider to the village is taken in and made into a human sacrifice. The sacrifice, named a Kusabi, is mutilated and cut, but kept alive so that the pain would act to pacify the abyss when they are finally thrown into it. More pain suffered by the Kusabi would hold back the darkness of the abyss for longer, however, this ritual's effects were temporary, meant only to delay disaster until the proper Crimson Sacrifice Ritual is held.
Although the abyss is revered the sacred site of these rituals, it is primarily feared as a passageway into the land of the dead. The rituals described are performed to appease the abyss and prevent the darkness from escaping and corrupting the village, A catastrophe villagers referred to as The Repentance. Merely speaking of the abyss is viewed as a taboo in the village, as any exposure to the abyss is known to inflict suffering.
- #43(Location) Misono Hillselective
Keys: Misono Hill
Misono Hill is a landmark in Minakami Village.
The path of this hill is the only one known to lead into Minakami Village, located south of it with a Shinto torii marking the entrance. After the village disappeared during the Repentance, anyone who became lost in the surrounding area came to the village via this hill. Once someone crosses the torii, the path behind vanishes into the dark and the person is trapped within the village.
Right in the middle of the hilltop is a stone pedestal known as the Offering Stone. This is what Masumi Makimura studied during his exploration of the village and determined it to be a sort of "cover" for a hole.
This hill also played a role in the festival relating to the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. Torches were lit at the beginning of the ceremony, and the Offering Stone was moved away from the hole. The villagers would gather on the hill, surrounding the stone, chanting and offering up prayers for the Sacrificed Twin soul. At the same time, Veiled Priests would chant the Sacrificial Song together underground at the site of the ritual. Mayu has mentioned that, although there is no one to be seen on the hill, she thought she heard "singing", which may refer to the priests' song.
The stone lies directly above the Hellish Abyss, which would explain the hole.
- #44(Location) Underground Passagewayselective
Keys: Underground Passageway
The Underground Passageway is a very long passage underneath the Kurosawa House which leads to the Hellish Abyss. At one point it was a network of linked passages and caves, used to get between houses, but by the time Mio and Mayu entered Minakami Village, a series of collapses had made it impassable in many places. One of the places it originally led to was the Earth Bridge, the cellar beneath the Osaka House and the path beneath the Kureha Shrine. Some of the dry wells in Minakami were connected to the caves, and the movement of the wind caused a resonant, eerie sound.
The passageway is haunted by Mourners, as they were not allowed above ground.
Veiled Priests, Twin Shrine Maidens, and Kusabi all entered the passageway via the Rope Temple of the Kurosawa House. Part of the passage was lined with the bodies of failed Kusabi, who died during the Cutting Ritual and were therefore not fit to be used as sacrifices.
