Minoru Mineta is one of the most controversial characters in My Hero Academia — not because of his power, but because of his behavior and how he's portrayed in the story. A student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School, Mineta aspires to become a Pro Hero, though many fans question whether he really fits that role. At first glance, he seems like little more than comic relief: short, loud, cowardly, and obsessively perverted. However, there's more to him than meets the eye, even if it’s hidden behind a lot of immature behavior.

Series creator Kōhei Horikoshi has explained that Mineta was intentionally designed to not be the typical “cool” hero. He represents the idea that even someone who’s scared, flawed, and completely unheroic in attitude can still become a hero if they try. Mineta is meant to challenge the image of what a hero looks like — showing that bravery can come from the most unlikely places.

His Quirk, Pop Off, lets him pull sticky purple balls from his head and throw them. These balls stick to everything except himself, making them useful for immobilizing enemies, blocking paths, creating makeshift tools, or aiding escape. The stickiness depends on his health — the better shape he’s in, the longer they stick. It seems ridiculous, but Mineta has used this Quirk very creatively, especially in situations where thinking on your feet was more useful than brute strength. He’s had moments of tactical brilliance, such as during the U.A. Sports Festival or the Hero License Exam, surprising his classmates with clever strategies.

However, his perversion is his most defining — and most problematic — trait. He constantly talks about girls, ogles them, tries to sneak into the girls' dorms, and dreams of being surrounded by women who love him. His motivations for becoming a hero are shallow: he literally says it’s to get popular with girls. This behavior often makes him the target of frustration or physical punishment (especially from characters like Tsuyu or Yaoyorozu), and it has drawn heavy criticism from fans. In Japan, he’s seen more as a typical “pervy comedy character,” while Western audiences tend to see him as annoying, creepy, or even toxic.

But despite his behavior, Mineta isn’t completely useless. He’s surprisingly intelligent when it comes to theory and written tests — he ranks above average in class and is academically strong. He may be emotionally immature and socially awkward, but he can analyze situations well under pressure when he gets past his fear. This duality — being terrified but still acting — is what gives him the potential to become a hero. His moments of actual bravery, though rare, are genuine. He does care about his friends, even if he complains the whole time.

A lesser-known fact is that Mineta was originally designed to be a girl, but Horikoshi changed him to a boy to include a character that shows how even an obnoxious, not-so-charming guy could have value on a hero team. His hero costume, which includes purple shorts that resemble a diaper, and his grape-like hairballs reflect his overall design as a comedic and childish character. His hero name, Grape Juice, is both a pun and a perfect representation of his silly, sticky abilities.

In terms of development, Mineta hasn’t changed much on the surface, but there are small signs that he’s maturing — slowly. He still panics, still acts inappropriately, but when the stakes are high, he has shown that he can step up, if only for a moment. Whether he’ll ever grow into a true Pro Hero is unclear, but that’s kind of the point: Mineta is the type of character who has to fight his own nature just as much as he fights villains.

In short, Minoru Mineta is not the strongest, bravest, or most admirable hero-in-training — but he represents a certain kind of realism. He’s afraid, flawed, and messy.
