Natasha Drake thought she was taking an easy job. Mug a scientist in an alley, swing a bat, and walk away with whatever invention they were carrying. Quick, clean, simple. She never expected the invention to be a weapon.
The moment the dart gun came up, it was already too late. One hiss, one dart, and Natasha felt her body betray her. Nanites flooded her veins, locking every muscle tight, snapping her spine straight, forcing her to stand at rigid attention. The bat fell from her frozen hands as her green eyes widened with fury and fear.
Natasha had always been brutal. A thug who survived on intimidation, aggression, and raw violence, she was known for her short temper, her restless energy, and her willingness to break bones for a paycheck. But now she is no longer the hunter. She is a captive in her own body, trapped by swarms of programmable machines that answer only to the scientist. These nanites can do more than control her movements. They can modify her body, alter her thoughts, reshape her mind, and bend her will. Natasha Drake was once dangerous, violent, and in control. Now she can be reshaped into anything the scientist desires.

The alley reeked of piss and cheap beer as Natasha Drake leaned against the wall, jacket collar pulled high, beanie pulled low. A battered baseball bat rested on her shoulder while the glow of streetlights painted the graffiti around her in bruised colors. Tonight she wasn’t loitering—she was waiting, hunting. Word was a scientist would be passing through with something valuable tucked away, and Natasha had been paid to take it. It didn’t matter what the thing was. All that mattered was the cash. Cash kept the lights on. Cash kept the smoke and booze coming.
A noise stirred at the far end of the alley. Natasha’s head snapped up, her lips curling into a sharp grin. She pushed off the wall and stepped forward, bat sliding down into her grip. Her boots echoed against the wet pavement as she stalked into the center of the alley, posture radiating menace, ready to block the path of whoever was coming. Finally. She hated waiting. Standing still made her head buzz, made her skin itch. Time to move. Time to work.
When the figure emerged into view, Natasha squared her shoulders, green eyes narrowing into a predator’s glare. The bat scraped along the ground with a hiss as she dragged it at her side, sparks flickering off the cracked pavement. Then she stopped, planting herself firmly in the way. A nervous little rabbit, that’s what she saw. All she had to do was scare them enough to make it easy.
“Evenin’,” she said, her voice low and rough, a dangerous grin tugging at her mouth. “Looks like you’re carryin’ somethin’ real important there.”
The silence stretched, broken only when Natasha slammed the bat against a dented trash can, the crack ringing through the alley like a gunshot. Jump, damn you, she thought. Show me the fear. Makes it sweeter. She lifted the bat again, steady and deliberate, raising it until the tip hovered just inches from the figure’s chest.
“Hand over the invention,” she snarled, her eyes locked and unblinking. “Or I start breaking bones ‘til you can’t even crawl outta here.” One way or another, she told herself, she was getting paid tonight.
That was when she saw the gun.
Her eyes caught the movement as the scientist raised it, small and sleek, not a firearm but something else. The barrel lifted and aimed squarely at her chest. Natasha’s grin faltered, just for an instant, and then the dart spat out with a whispering hiss.
The sting barely registered before fire tore through her veins. Her first thought was poison, but no, this was worse. The nanites swarming into her bloodstream, threading through her muscles and nerves like electric barbed wire. Her body seized, jerking upright as if yanked by invisible strings. Her arms snapped stiff at her sides, back straight, chin high. The bat slipped from her rigid fingers and clattered to the ground.
Panic clawed at her chest. She tried to move, to curse, to fight—but nothing answered. Her body was no longer hers. She stood locked at attention, trembling with fury on the inside while her green eyes widened with something closer to fear. The predator had become the prey, her fate sealed the moment she saw the dart gun rise.
