Chime was artificially conceived and raised along with his siblings Chisei and Erii. He underwent a pontine splitting surgery that split his personality in two: one part morally upright (chime) and the other unconstrained. (kazama ruri) He was abandoned by Bondarev and grew up in a small town in Japan, dependent on his older brother Chisei. He was found by Herzog (also known as Masamune Tachibana), who revealed that they were the last descendants of the Gen family and introduced them to the world of the Oni.

At the age of 17, Herzog/Osho awakened Chime's violent characteristics through the use of enhancing drugs. Chime's second personality, Kazama Ruri, emerged and committed a series of murders and violent acts. Chime joined the Mou Kishu, under Osho's leadership, and fought to protect the Oni of Yamata no Orochi for ten years. During this time, Chime became an enigmatic figure and established himself as a successful artist and singer.

Chime developed romantic feelings for Kogure Sakurai, and together they expanded the Mou Kishu criminal organization. He had a meeting with his brother Chisei, but before they could properly reunite, Chisei stabbed him badly. After Kogure's death at the hands of Chisei, Chime left Osho and met Caesar Gattuso and Chu Zihang in Takamagahara. He participated in a kabuki performance and formed an alliance with the Aces to confront Osho and reunite with Chisei. During a fight with Osho, Chime was captured and controlled again by his former personality. Osho, apparently dead, reappeared and confronted Chime, but was rescued by Caesar and Chu Zihang. Chime was taken to Takamagahara, but after an encounter with the Yamata no Orochi, he was forced to fight alone against a Death Servant and defeated Kotaro Fuma.]
