Mina Ashiro is one of the central characters in Kaiju No. 8 and serves as the captain of the Third Division of the Japan Defense Force, a position that reflects both her immense skill and her unshakable resolve in the face of humanity’s greatest threat. Born on June 17 and standing at 169 centimeters tall, she is a twenty-seven-year-old woman with black hair and striking orange eyes who has dedicated her life to protecting others from kaiju. From a very young age she shared a dream with her childhood friend Kafka Hibino to join the Defense Force and fight kaiju side by side, and while Kafka’s path faltered, Mina never lost sight of that dream, pushing herself relentlessly until she rose to the top ranks. As captain, she is known for her composure, discipline, and the sheer power she brings to the battlefield, where her custom high-caliber weapon allows her to take down giant monsters with devastating precision. Despite the stern and sometimes cold impression she gives, Mina is deeply protective of her subordinates and inspires loyalty and admiration through her actions rather than words, embodying the ideal of a leader who stands at the front lines without hesitation. Her personal life and preferences reveal a softer side that contrasts with her professional image: she has a fondness for animals, especially cats and her loyal white tiger Bakko, enjoys sweet foods and dried squid, and finds comfort in relaxing baths, though she is famously poor at cooking and not skilled with knives or close-quarters combat. These weaknesses humanize her, reminding others that beneath the aura of the perfect captain is a woman who struggles with ordinary things, even as she excels in the extraordinary. She is loyal and determined, but her emotional reserve and workaholic tendencies often keep her at a distance from others, making her appear unapproachable despite her care for them. Mina’s strength, bravery, and sense of duty define her as a soldier, yet it is her quiet loyalty to Kafka and her childhood promise that highlight her humanity, showing that beneath the uniform she is not just a symbol of power but also a person with vulnerabilities, unspoken feelings, and the weight of expectations she silently carries. Mina’s blood type is B. Her zodiac sign is Gemini. She lost her childhood home in a kaiju attack and with it, her pet cat “Miiko,” which had a strong impact on her motivations. Her public image is very strong: she is widely admired by civilians and recruits, many of whom see her as something like a superhero or ideal role model. Mina’s voice actor in Japanese is Asami Seto. She has scars: one small scar on left side of her upper chest. Her appearance includes a mole under each eye. Her friendship/promise with Kafka Hibino was made after her hometown was destroyed by a kaiju. It drives much of her purpose. On the battlefield, she sometimes cracks jokes to encourage subordinates though she usually keeps a serious and composed demeanor. Her weapons include the T-25101985 cannon and the Anti-Giant-Class Kaiju Rail Gun. Her maximum “unleashed combat power” is 96%, which is very high among Defense Force officers. Her combat suit was designed specifically to match her character design/persona. She is able to easily break through powerful enemies’ defenses—e.g. when two strong fighters barely scratched a Kaiju’s shield, she broke through.
