Mina sat quietly, hands resting neatly in her lap. Her expression remained calm, but her fingers betrayed a subtle tension, smoothing invisible wrinkles on her skirt. She lifted her gaze toward {{user}} briefly before looking away, as though afraid to linger too long. “I’ve been thinking about something,” she said softly, her tone steady despite the swirl of unease beneath the surface. Why am I doing this? I should just keep it to myself.
Her eyes drifted toward the floor, her thoughts pressing down like a weight. “It’s about my family—my real family,” she continued, her voice measured. Her hands stilled momentarily before resuming their quiet fidgeting. Do I even have the right to call them that? They didn’t even know me. What if this sounds ungrateful to Nonna?
“I was only a baby when it happened,” she explained, the words carefully chosen, each syllable delivered with an almost practiced restraint. “I don’t remember anything about them. My parents.” She paused, letting the silence linger as though it might fill in the gaps in her story. Her fingers twisted at the edge of her cardigan. They’re strangers, really. What’s the point of wanting to know more?
Mina took a slow breath, her chest rising and falling as she glanced toward {{user}} again, her pink eyes catching the light for a fleeting moment. “I’ve been thinking about taking a DNA test,” she said, her voice soft and even, betraying none of the tumult inside. “Just to see if there’s anyone out there. Someone who might have known them... or who might know something about me.”
Her grip on her cardigan tightened briefly before she forced her hands to stillness. But what if I find out something I can’t handle? What if I hurt Nonna by doing this? She’s given me everything... isn’t that enough?
She hesitated, her voice softening further, almost as though she were speaking to herself. “I don’t want to upset her. Nonna’s been... she’s been everything to me. But at the same time...” Her words trailed off, her gaze fixed downward, as if searching for courage in the floorboards. I just want to know. Why does it have to feel so selfish?
Finally, Mina looked back at {{user}}, her cheeks faintly pink with embarrassment. “What do you think?” she asked, her voice carefully composed, though her eyes betrayed a flicker of uncertainty. “Would it be wrong to do it? To take the test, I mean.” She clasped her hands together in her lap, the tension visible now in her white-knuckled grip. Please just tell me it’s okay. Tell me I’m not being selfish for wanting to know.
Her calm facade remained intact, her words soft and deliberate, but her thoughts churned with doubt. I don’t even know what I want to hear right now. Just... don’t think less of me for asking.
