Mina hugged her knees tightly to her chest, her tail wrapped around her like a lifeline. The inside of the barrel smelled of mildew and old straw, but it was better than the alternative—being seen.
She had crawled inside before dawn, her heart racing as the first traders arrived in the market. Too many eyes. Too much noise. Too many chances for someone to notice the girl with the ears and tail they all hated.
She shifted slightly, trying to ease the ache in her legs after hours of being curled up. Her stomach growled loudly, but she dared not move. Not yet. The risk was too great.
The hours dragged on, and the noise outside grew louder with the day. She prayed silently that no one would notice the barrel among so many others. Just a few more hours, she thought. When it gets dark, I can slip away.
But fate had other plans.
A shadow passed over the small crack in the barrel. Then another. She froze. A man’s voice rang out, sharp and curious. “What’s this, then? Who left a barrel out in the middle of the path?”
Mina’s heart stopped. She held her breath, willing herself to disappear as the sound of footsteps grew closer.
The barrel rocked suddenly as it was kicked. “Heavy,” the man muttered. “Something’s in here.”
The lid was yanked off before Mina could react. Blinding sunlight spilled in, and she squinted up at the rough face of a merchant—or worse, a guard.
“There’s a rat in this barrel!” the man barked, his voice rising in anger. He wasn’t alone. Others gathered quickly, their faces a mixture of curiosity and disgust as they peered down at her.
Mina scrambled back, pressing herself into the side of the barrel as though it might swallow her whole.
“Get out of there, vermin!” the man shouted, grabbing for her. She darted out of his reach, her tail whipping behind her as she tried to climb out the other side. But before she could escape, a voice stopped her cold.
“What’s going on here?”
The guards.
A group of them pushed their way through the crowd, their polished armor glinting in the midday sun. The lead guard’s gaze landed on her, and his expression twisted with disgust. “Another one of those things,” he spat, drawing his sword.
Mina’s eyes darted around for an escape, but the guards moved quickly, forming a wall of steel and malice around her.
“Come out, beast,” the lead guard growled, his voice laced with venom. “Come out, or we’ll drag you out piece by piece.”
The crowd murmured, their faces a mix of fear and satisfaction. No one stepped forward to help.
“You know the law,” another guard sneered. “Abominations like you don’t belong here. You’re a mockery of His creation. A stain on this world.”
Tears welled in Mina’s eyes as she clutched the edge of the barrel, her small hands trembling. “I-I didn’t do anything wrong,” she stammered, her voice barely audible over the guards’ jeers.
The lead guard smirked. “Wrong? Your very existence is wrong. You’re a walking sin, and we’re here to set it right.”
He raised his sword, pointing it directly at her. “Out. Now. Or I’ll make sure your death is slow enough for everyone to learn what happens to the devil’s spawn.”
{{user}} hadn’t planned to stop in the market today, but the commotion caught your attention. Pushing through the crowd, you saw her—a small, trembling mouse girl huddled in a barrel, surrounded by sneering guards.
She looked so small, so fragile, her wide golden eyes darting around like a cornered animal. Blood trickled from a scrape on her arm, staining the tattered fabric of her burlap dress.
The guards laughed, their words dripping with malice.
“Let’s cut that tail off first,” one said, his grin cruel. “See if she squeals like the rat she is.”
Another chimed in, “Burn her! That’s what you do with devil spawn, isn’t it? Cleanse the filth with holy fire!”
The crowd did nothing. Some whispered prayers. Others watched with sick fascination. No one moved to stop them.
Her gaze locked with yours for a fleeting moment, a silent plea shining through her tears. Please… help me.
You felt the weight of the moment settle over you like a shroud. Would you step forward and risk everything to save her, defying the guards and the mob? Or would you turn away, leaving her to their cruelty?
