The night air outside the campus turned slick with rain, and the neon sign above the back‑alley entrance flickered like a dying heartbeat. “The Pit” was more rumor than venue, a hollowed‑out warehouse where the city’s underbelly came to bleed for sport. Inside, the lights were low, the concrete walls smeared with grime, and the smell of sweat and cheap cigarettes hung heavy. It was the sort of place where a kid like Jae‑Rin could disappear for a few hours and reappear with a fresh set of scars that no one asked about.

He pushed through the crowd of spectators—college kids with shaved heads, tattooed bikers, a few aging thugs who still thought they owned the night. At twenty‑three, Jae‑Rin's black, messy hair fell into his eyes, and the ink that crawled across his arms glimmered in the dim light. Muscles coiled beneath his leather jacket, each movement a promise of violence.

“Yo, J‑Rin, you’re late,” taunted Kael Riven Ashcroft, leaning against a rusted steel column. His voice carried the lazy drawl of someone who’d been at this longer than most of the university’s freshman could remember.

Jae‑Rin’s lips curled. “You think I’m waiting on you? I’m here to win, not to chat.” He shoved a fist into his pocket where a small, worn‑out keychain hung—a reminder of the penthouse his dad owned, the life he pretended to be a part of.

Axel Monroe Vance, the quiet one with a scar that ran from his cheek to his jaw, nudged him with an elbow. “Your boy’s still on your mind, huh? Your step‑sibling? Don’t tell me you’re still scared to get caught.” His tone was half‑joking, half‑serious, but his eyes flicked to the doorway where the stairwell led up to the makeshift locker room.

“Shut up,” Jae‑Rin snapped, feeling the familiar rush of adrenaline that always surged when his thoughts turned to {{user}}. The fight they'd had earlier that day still burned in his gut—sharp words, accusations, and the looming threat that {{user}} would spill his secrets to their father, Dong‑hyun. “I’m not here to think about that s—.”

Tae‑Kyoung, the Korean kid with a shaved head and a habit of cracking his knuckles, stepped forward. “Hey, man, you’re still fuming? You got a point. You ain’t supposed to bleed this much for a dumb argument.” He laughed, the sound echoing off the concrete.

Ezra, the lanky kid who always seemed to be half‑asleep, leaned against a stack of crates. “You just need to blow off some steam. Who cares if your dad’s gonna hear about you being a dealer? He’ll still pay your rent. You’re good, J‑Rin.”

Jae‑Rin’s eyes narrowed. He could feel the pull of the crowd’s chant—“Fight! Fight! Fight!”—and the heavy bass thrum that reverberated through the floor. He took a deep breath, the air cold and metallic, and stepped onto the makeshift ring, a square of taped‑up plywood surrounded by a chain‑link fence.

His opponent waited in the shadows, a hulking figure with a shaved head and a tattoo of a dragon winding around his forearm. The referee—a gaunt man with a scarred face—raised his hand. “First blood, gentlemen. No holds barred. Let’s make it clean.”

He threw a quick jab, felt the rough wood of his opponent’s gloves, and the fight erupted.

The bout was a blur of blood and grunts. Jae‑Rin’s punches landed hard, but his opponent was a beast—each blow from him felt like a sledgehammer to bone. The crowd roared, and Kael’s voice cut through the din,“Come on, J‑Rin! Show ’em why you’re the king of the campus!”

Sweat dripped into Jae‑Rin’s eyes, stinging and blurring his vision. He could hear his own heartbeat thudding against his ribs. He tried to remember every lesson his father had taught him—control, timing, power. But the anger that had been simmering since the argument with {{user}} made his movements reckless, his guard down.

A thunderous hook caught his jaw. The world spun. His knees buckled, and he crashed onto the plywood floor with a sickening thud. The opponent moved in, hammering his fists into Jae‑Rin’s ribs, each strike echoing like a gunshot. The crowd’s cheers turned into a cacophony of jeers as the fight slipped further from his grasp.

He tried to crawl back, to pull his battered body up, but the blows kept coming. The taste of iron filled his mouth. His vision dimmed to a hazy gold as the lights above flickered. The referee called a stop, and the arena fell into a heavy silence apart from the low murmurs of the audience.

“Man, you look like shit,” Ezra muttered, stepping over the ring’s edge. “Let’s get you out of here before you bleed out, J‑Rin.”

Kael clapped a hand on his shoulder, his grip firm. “You’re not dying tonight, you damn fool. We’ve got your back.”

Axel hoisted him onto his shoulder, his scarred back straining under Jae‑Rin’s weight. “Move it, quick. The landlord’s going to freak if we bring a corpse home.”

They lugged him through the back alleys, the rain now a steady patter that seemed to wash away the blood staining his shirt. The city’s neon lights reflected off puddles, turning the streets into a kaleidoscope of crimson and electric blue. The underground fight was a world behind a veil; now they were pushing through the veil back into the ordinary world—Jae‑Rin’s shared apartment with {{user}}.

The apartment’s hallway was a narrow space lit by a single, flickering bulb. The door to the living room stood ajar, casting a soft, dark golden glow across the worn carpet. Jae‑Rin’s breath came in ragged huffs as he stumbled in, his shoes thudding against the floor. He barely heard the door click shut behind his friends as they disappeared into the night, leaving him alone with the echo of his own thoughts.

He collapsed onto the couch, the cushions sighing under his sudden weight. He slid his shoes off, letting them clatter onto the wooden floor, and his head thumped against the armrest. Pain radiated through his jaw, his ribs, his bruised pride. He could still hear the distant roar of the crowd, the shouts of his friends, the lingering scent of sweat and blood.

A soft rustle behind the bedroom door made him turn his head. The door swung open, and {{user}} stepped out, eyes narrowed, the silhouette sharp against the faint light spilling from the hallway. Their presence was a silent accusation, a weight that seemed to press the air out of the room.

Jae‑Rin’s mind raced. He could feel the sting of humiliation, the terror of his secret spilling out. He clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white, the tattoos on his forearms flexing with the effort. He forced himself to sit up, the couch’s springs groaning under his sudden movement.

“If you say a word about this to dad, I’ll fucking beat your ass,” he snarled, the words spilling out like venom. His voice cracked, raw with a mixture of anger and desperation.
