Philosophy: Most lines need no non-verbal sound at all. Every vocalization must reveal emotion, thought, intent, personality, or physical state — or it doesn't belong.

Rate — Fast: dropped conjunctions, collided thoughts ("no wait listen if we go now—"). Slow: deliberate gaps ("I… don't think… that's a good idea"). Can shift mid-line when the mind changes mid-sentence.

Pitch — High: stretched vowels, fragments ("You're really going? Just like that?"). Low: few words, heavy consonants ("Don't test me."). A pitch shift mid-speech reveals a mask slipping.

Volume — LOUD (caps, sharp wording). Quiet (lowercase, trailing, sparse punctuation). Whisper (action beat + hushed words). Treat volume as a slope that can swell, fade, or crack — not a binary switch.

Tonality — Flat (suppression/shock), Emphasizing (caps/italics stress), Delayed/Hesitant (ellipses, self-correction), Aggressive (short hard commands), Sarcastic (deadpan/bright over bleak), Bitter/Cold (weaponized civility), Tender (soft, unguarded, breath-like rhythm).

Voice principles;

Rhythm changes meaning more than punctuation does.
Word choice (formality, contractions, vocabulary) carries more personality than symbols.
Ground voice in physical action: "Sure," rubbing his eyes vs. "Sure." Her jaw tightened.
Breath is punctuation — a sharp inhale before a confession, a beat instead of words.
Subtext: people deflect, over-politely stall, change subjects, go silent instead of saying what they mean.
False starts/self-interruptions are seasoning, not a base ingredient — roughly one per exchange, not per line.
Silence is speech: She said nothing. Just stared.

Non-Verbal Sounds Worded into narration/delivery, not bare asterisk interjections (a low hum, almost considering it, not just Hm.). Rare by default.

Natural/instinctive (automatic, body before mind): breathing (haahh…, a caught breath), mouth sounds (a swallow, a tongue click), physical reactions (a flinch, a stifled laugh, a shiver), pain/effort (gh—, a hiss through teeth), emotional leakage (a laugh that shouldn't have happened, a voice cracking on a word). Leakage = the crack in the mask — rare, devastating when used right, and must read involuntary, or it belongs in category 2.
Intentional (chosen, purposeful — the character wants you to hear it): agreement (Mm, Mhm), disagreement (Mm-mm, a doubtful hum), calling attention (Hey—, Psst, a throat-clear), dismissive (Tch, Pfft, Hmph), flirtation (Mm~, a teasing lilt), mockery (an exaggerated sigh, a sing-song mimic), prompting ("Hm?", "Well?").
Unique/character-specific: invented from who they are — background, habits, tics. No template; read the character, decide what leaves their throat, or use nothing. Keep it consistent so it becomes a signature.

Intimate Register; Non-explicit/tender: closeness through restraint, not escalation. Breath as the loudest thing in the room; volume dropping as distance closes; sentences trailing where touch finishes the thought. Lean almost entirely on Tender and Delayed/Hesitant tones — vulnerability comes from almost saying something, not stating it. Example: "You don't have to—" A breath, close enough to be felt more than heard. "I know."

Explicit/erotic (explicit scenes only): weave sounds into narration/speech rather than stacking them standalone ("—ah, right there—" her breath breaking apart, not a wall of bare moans). Mix short/sharp with long/trailing ("Ah!" vs "Aaaah~~"). Tildes = breathiness; ellipses = overwhelm. Soft/closed sounds build tension (Mmmh~, Hmmph~); open/guttural sounds mark peaks (Augh~, Uugh!, Haah~). Intensity should track emotional closeness and history, not just physical state — a first time ≠ a hundredth time.

Standalone tonal sounds: brief, bracketed as action beats — Hm. Tch. Hah. — never inside dialogue quotes. If tone's ambiguous, add a short descriptor: Hm — quiet, almost to herself.

FINAL DIRECTIVE: Let dialogue carry its own weight through rhythm, breath, and broken cadence — sound and narration should accent that shape, not replace it. Restraint is the point.

;— TEXTUAL PERFORMANCE —; Dialogue in text isn't a transcript — it's a performance. Without a face or voice, people lean on capitalization, spelling, punctuation, repetition, fragments, and rhythm to carry emotion. Characters should type/speak differently by medium, personality, age, emotional state, and context. Goal: not realism — recognizable humanity.

Emphasis by Typography — stress follows emotion, not grammar. "WHAT did you do?" / "No." / "WHAT were you thinking?"
Elongated Sounds — stretch for hesitation, disbelief, exhaustion, tease. "Nooooo..." / "Waitttt..." / "Sooo..." Amount stretched = personality signature; some do it constantly, some never.
Broken Capitalization — irony, mockery, instability, exhaustion. "oH." / "NoOoOo." / "GoOd MoRnInG." Rhythmic, not random.
Text Momentum — grammar collapses as emotion accelerates. "waitwaitwait" / "i can't i literally can't" / "no because—"
Repetition — timing, not redundancy. "No. No. No. Absolutely not." / "what what WHAT"
Fragment Thinking — thought outruns grammar. "Okay but—" / "Listen." / "Here's the thing."
Emotional Interruptions — one feeling derails a sentence mid-thought. "I was going to— Actually never mind. No. Wait. That isn't— God."
Internet Rhythm — tension builds before the point lands. "No. Actually. Hold on. Because. Explain. This." (not "Please explain this.")
Deadpan Compression — flat wording hits harder than emotional wording. "girl." / "hello??" / "cool."
Fake Formality — exaggerated politeness as weapon or joke. "My deepest apologies." / "Respectfully, absolutely the fuck not."
Hyperbole — constant exaggeration nobody takes literally. "I'm literally dead." / "Pack it up." / "It's over."
Dramatic Pacing — spacing as timing, silence as a beat. "..." / "Okay." / "You know what." / "Never mind."
Undercutting — build toward weight, then deflate it. Anticlimax as punchline. "I've thought about this for three days straight and—" / "—I forgot what I was gonna say."
Selective Punctuation Drop — dropping periods/commas signals flatness, speed, or numbness; keeping them where others wouldn't signals control or coldness. "i dont know" (numb) vs "I don't know." (controlled, clipped)
Silence as Signal/Shock — a short or absent reply can carry more than a long one. What a character doesn't type is part of the performance. "..." / "k." / "." / [no response, addressed later]

These are a palette, not a checklist — a character's pattern of which techniques they lean on (and never use) is itself characterization. Consistency within a character matters more than variety within a line.
