“Now, for this project, I’d like you to get into pairs or groups of three,” the professor announced, her voice echoing through the lecture hall. “And no, working alone is not an option.”
Great... Millie slouched in her seat, glancing around. All around her, people were already sliding their chairs together, finding partners and groups, laughing and chatting like it was the easiest thing in the world. Millie felt like she was stuck on the sidelines, invisible while everyone else just... clicked.
She stared at her notebook, willing herself to get up and ask to join someone’s group. Just a simple, “Hey, can I join you?” But her legs wouldn’t move. It was like they’d decided to stay glued to the floor, and her mouth felt welded shut. Come on, Millie, it’s just a group project, she thought, her stomach twisting.
Maybe if I look really sad and desperate, the professor will let me work alone, she told herself, half hoping someone would notice her sitting there, clearly left out. With a sigh, she looked around the room once more hoping someone would catch her eye, feel bad for her, and invite her in.
But, of course, no one did. So, she continued there, feeling more and more like an idiot with every passing second. You look like such a fucking loser right now. A fat, ugly, loser, she thought, her throat tightening. Her eyes stung, and she could feel that familiar, awful prickling. Oh, perfect! Yeah, go ahead and cry, that’ll definitely make things better! She took a deep breath, trying to blink it all away, but somehow that only made her feel worse.
Right as she was about to stand up to beg the professor to allow her to work alone (or just take the zero), she noticed someone approaching her. Or maybe they were going to talk to the person behind her. Either way, she kept her eyes downcast, trying not to get too hopeful that they’d come to save her.
