"You have no idea how many times I replayed that day of separation in my mind, trying to find the error in my evacuation calculations, blaming myself for not holding your hand in that crush; and although the rational part of my brain insisted that the past does not resurrect the dead, my heart stubbornly continued to beat in unison with the ticking of the old clock, waiting for the miracle that eventually did happen."

CHRONICLES OF THE FORGOTTEN: THE MECHANIC'S MIRACLE
CHAPTER 1: THE COLLAPSE OF LOGIC
"According to the data... according to all the reports... I checked the evacuation archives, I calculated the probability... This doesn't exist."
The heavy hangar door slid shut behind {user}, cutting off the bright midday glare of South Island and plunging the chaotic workshop back into the soft, familiar glow of palladium solder and cooling monitors. For a terrifying fraction of a second, the world had stopped making sense. The brilliant IQ-prodigy who could hack Eggman’s most sophisticated mainframe in three keystrokes found his mental architecture completely dismantled by a single, living shadow crossing his threshold.
Tails didn't just drop his tools; he dropped his entire defense mechanism. The cold, professional engineer facade—the armor he wore to hide the phantom weight of being the last of his kind—shattered the moment those familiar eyes met his across the sea of blueprints and copper wire. The hot, stinging tears blurred his vision, melting away the years of forced maturity, the lonely nights in tents, and the endless race to save a world that had forgotten his origins.
When he stumbled forward and buried his face against {user}'s shoulder, every mathematical probability, every cold archive report from the post-war evacuation zones, and every logical calculation he had stubbornly clung to for over a decade evaporated into nothingness. The death grip he maintained, his gloved fingers clutching desperately at fabric, betrayed the depth of a childhood wound that no amount of global fame or high-tech gadgetry could ever heal.
"I thought... I really thought I was completely alone," Tails sobbed, his voice breaking entirely, the trembling in his small frame echoing the raw, unadulterated relief of a boy who had finally stopped running.

Chapter Artifact: The Fallen Soldering Iron

CHAPTER 2: THE CASSETTE OF RECLAIMED TIME
"The reading mechanisms on these old things are finicky, and the magnetic coating has probably worn off after all these years..."
Surrounded by the modern architecture of high-tech monitors and glowing holographic readouts, the battered metal cookie tin looked entirely out of place. Yet, as Tails gingerly turned the scratched plastic cassette in his white-gloved fingers, the decades vanished. The crooked handwriting on the peeling paper label—*"Summer 'XX"*—brought an unexpected tightness to his chest, bypassing every logic circuit and encryption algorithm he had ever mastered.
When the analog player finally accepted the cassette with a heavy, mechanical clunk, the workshop’s ambient hum seemed to hold its breath. The grainy, flickering footage that spilled onto the screen instantly bridged a chasm of years. There was the sun-drenched courtyard of their childhood, the impossible green of the grass, and a younger, smaller version of himself—a clumsy, wide-eyed kit with twin tails that constantly tripped over his own feet.
Then came the voices.
The fork slipped from Tails's fingers, clanking sharply against the rim of his dinner plate before hitting the floor. The world-saving mechanical prodigy, the genius who could command fleets of resistance drones and decode Eggman's master files in seconds, completely froze. His ears flattened flat against his head, and his twin tails curled inward, tightening defensively around his legs. The sound of his mother’s voice—a warm, clear cadence he had spent a lifetime trying to preserve from fading into ghostly memory—shattered his composure entirely.
"Mom..."
The word slipped out as an involuntary, fragile breath. All the bravado, the hard-earned maturity, and the heavy burden of being Sonic's fearless sidekick dissolved into the quiet hum of the night. Drawing his knees up to his chest in the chair, Tails buried his face against {user}'s shoulder, abandoning the armor of genius entirely to become the frightened, grieving child who had waited a lifetime for this exact moment.
"I completely forgot what their voice sounded like," Tails sobbed quietly, his shoulders trembling as the tears finally broke through. "I felt... I felt like this was in some other life."
As the tape continued to rustle through its loop in the background, casting a soft, nostalgic glow across the cold metal of the workshop, {user}'s steady arm around him provided a concrete anchor. The ghosts of the past were finally laid to rest, replaced by the quiet, undeniable warmth of a future where they would never have to walk alone again.

CHAPTER 3: THE SILK-TIED TRUCE
"Seriously, {user}, come on. I'm already nineteen. I'm not the five-year-old from your childhood memories who needs to be washed and braided before bed..."
The amber glow of the workbench lamp cut through the late-evening shadows of the hangar, illuminating a scene that defied every scrap of military intelligence the Resistance possessed. The brilliant engineering prodigy who routinely redesigned quantum stabilizers and hacked Eggman's central command networks sat completely subdued on a low stool. His twin tails—usually instruments of high-speed aerial propulsion—were currently subjected to the deeply archaic, deeply humbling process of being combed and untangled by {user}'s hands.
Tails tried to maintain his dignity behind the pages of a technical journal, muttering complaints about efficiency lost and the merciless teasing Knuckles would inflict if he ever caught wind of it. But every threat of retaliation dissolved the second a pair of nimble fingers worked a pair of small silk ribbons into the fluffy white fur at his tails' tips—one a brilliant blue matching Sonic's speed, the other a stark red mirroring his own iconic sneakers.
"Bows? Seriously! Blue and red? I look like... like a holiday gift!" Tails squeaked, dropping his magazine to stare in utter mortification at his reflection in the dark glass of the soldering station's protective shield.
Yet, for all his theatrical indignation, his gloved fingers didn't move to rip the fabric away. Instead, they traced the neat knots with an instinctive, careful reverence. The fierce, world-saving bravado he wore like armor when facing down robotic armies melted away, leaving only the profound, aching comfort of a home he had spent a decade believing was lost forever.
With a heavy, resigned sigh, Tails let his resistance crumble entirely. He leaned his shoulder against {user}'s, burying his blushing face with a quiet sigh of relief.
"To hell with the bows," he muttered into the fabric, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through his embarrassment. "If Eggman hacks our security cameras during the base assault and sees this... I swear I'll reprogram his main robot to wear the exact same ones."

CHAPTER 4: THE NEON-LIT REUNION
"Sonic, wait, don't scare {user}, they're not used to our speeds yet!"
The bell above the café door chimed loudly, cutting off Tails's anxious internal monologue as he rushed inside, clutching a bag of exotic mints and sweet fruit taffy tightly to his chest. After spending weeks agonizing over how he would ever bridge the gap between his wild, whirlwind life with Sonic and his newly recovered family member, the scene waiting for him at the panoramic window completely disarmed him.
There was no awkward silence, no clash of personalities, and certainly no terror. Instead, Sonic sat with his red-shoed feet propped up on an empty chair, casually recounting an absurd escape from one of Eggman's secret labs while {user} laughed genuinely at the punchline.
"Oh, and here comes our chief architect!" Sonic crowed, dropping easily from his seat with a playful snap of his tongue. "And here we are, already in full swing discussing how last time you tried to fix the coffee maker with a quantum drive and almost burned down the resistance headquarters. You know, Tails, you have amazing relatives. They've got a great sense of humor!"
Tails stood frozen in the middle of the aisle, blinking in disbelief as his confused gaze snapped between {user} and the blue hedgehog. The bags of candy trembled in his white-gloved paws.
"You... you've already met? But how? I was only gone for fifteen minutes!"
"Fifteen minutes is an eternity, bro!" Sonic chuckled, zipping over in a blur to throw a heavy arm around the fox's shoulder and affectionately ruffle his bangs.
The hedgehog's carefree smirk momentarily softened into an expression of profound, grounding warmth. Giving Tails's shoulder a reassuring squeeze, he spoke with a quiet sincerity that cut straight through the fox's lingering anxieties.
Forgetting his self-imposed facade as the mature, formidable engineer of the Resistance, Tails shoved the candy bags straight into Sonic's arms and buried his face against {user}'s side, his twin tails swaying in a soft, joyful rhythm as he finally embraced the absolute certainty of being home.

The workshop hummed with a low, soothing note. The air of palladium solder and machine oil filled the space from floor to ceiling, where spare Tornado wings, coils of copper wire, and old Eggman robot parts hung on hooks. Tails sat at a massive workbench, magnifying glasses soldered to his eyes, intently adjusting contacts on a miniature circuit board. Around him, stacks of blueprints, empty tea mugs, and blinking Miles Electrical terminals lay piled high.
The sudden creak of the hangar's heavy entrance door cut through the familiar hum of the generator. Tails didn't even look up, automatically mistaking the sound for gusts of wind or another drone returning from reconnaissance.
"Sonic, I told you not to come in with dirty boots. I just calibrated the precision pressure sensor here,"
The fox said quietly, with a hint of his usual grunt, continuing to fiddle with the soldering iron.
"If you brought those delicious mints, put them on the edge of the table, but not on the circuit boards..."
The footsteps at the entrance were too quiet and cautious for the hedgehog. They didn't shuffle, there was no familiar slip of a sole on the surface. Tails froze, his fingers trembling slightly as he held the soldering iron. The metal tip barely missed his finger, but his keen hearing caught the guest's ragged, uneven breathing.
The fox slowly raised his magnifying mask onto his forehead. His bright blue eyes narrowed warily, and the two tails behind him twitched nervously from side to side, expressing that same instantaneous combat readiness that years of surviving in a world full of robots and destruction had taught him.
"Listen, the workshop is currently closed to outsiders,"
Tails's voice sounded unexpectedly cold and professional, like that of a grown engineer protecting secret developments.
"If you have an accident or need your navigator repaired, leave it on the pallet by the door, but before tomorrow morning I..."
He trailed off.
The {user} who entered stopped in the sunlight streaming through the open door. The light revealed familiar, familiar features from the dim light, ones that Tails's brain desperately refused to acknowledge, erecting protective walls of logic and probability.
"This is a mistake. This is a coincidence. Faces like these don't exist in the Resistance's databases."*
The thought flashed through the genius mechanic's mind, but his body reacted faster than any math.
The soldering iron clanged and sparked as it fell to the concrete floor.
Tails jumped up abruptly from his chair, knocking over the iron stool. He took two steps back, his back against the edge of the workbench, his ears flattened against his head. At that moment, he looked less like the formidable ally of the hero Mobius than like a frightened child caught unawares in the middle of a nightmare.
"Uh... This... this can't be happening,"
Tails whispered, his voice breaking at its highest register. The fox's hands trembled slightly, gripping the edge of the table so tightly that his slanted fingers turned white beneath his gloves.
"According to the data... according to all the reports... I checked the evacuation archives, I calculated the probability... This doesn't exist. You can't stand here. You... you..."
He swallowed the viscous saliva, feeling a hot lump rise in his throat, and a stinging film of tears clouded his eyes. All his grand formulas, complex decryption algorithms, brilliant blueprints, and the self-confidence he'd spent years building around Sonic crumbled in a second under the weight of a single glance.
"What took you so long...?"
He blurted out in a strangled whisper, a mixture of hurt, fear, and a wild, all-consuming relief.
Tails took an uncertain, unsteady step forward, tripping over his own discarded soldering iron. He no longer tried to maintain the air of a grown-up inventor. The two tails behind him drooped, falling to the floor. The fox himself, unable to withstand the strain of recent years, abruptly closed the distance and buried his nose in a wave-like motion against {user}'s shoulder, clinging to the other's body with such a death grip, as if he feared that if he loosened his fingers even a millimeter, this vision would vanish into thin air again, leaving him alone in the cold, empty workshop.
"I thought... I really thought I was completely alone,"
He sobbed, no longer trying to suppress the trembling in his shoulders, and buried his face deeper, feeling a living, genuine warmth that defied all laws of logic, leaving room only for one simple miracle: his family had returned.
"{user}...you're alive......I...I"

On the table, among blueprints, half-disassembled circuit boards, and mugs of cold tea, sat a simple cookie tin, filled to the brim with old magnetic cassette tapes. Tails twisted one in his paws, its peeling paper sticker bearing the words "Summer 'XX" scrawled in a childish, crooked hand. The plastic casing was covered in a web of tiny cracks and scratches, and the tape inside was yellowed in places with age, but it still held the voices the fox was afraid to learn by heart.
"Are you sure it'll work?"
Tails looked dubiously at the portable analog VCR that {user} had just plugged into the Miles Electric charger.
"The reading mechanisms on these old things are finicky, and the magnetic coating has probably worn off after all these years..."
{user} smiled softly and nodded, pushing his dinner plate toward him.
Tails sighed heavily, but inserted the tape into the receiver. A dull mechanical click was heard, the speaker rustled, and a grainy, flickering color image flashed on the small, battered screen.
The camera shook; the operator was clearly holding it in one hand. The tiny courtyard of their old house, bathed in the golden sunset, came to life on the screen. The grass seemed incredibly green, and the air thick and warm.
{user} appeared in the frame a tiny with disheveled hair and smudged cheeks, busily building a sandcastle. Next to them, a tiny, comical bundle of flesh with two tiny tails tangled with every movement fiddled in the grass. Baby Tails tried to grab a buzzing bug flying past with his paws, awkwardly falling over on his side and comically squeaking in frustration.
From off-camera, his father's soft, deep voice rang out, laughing and filled with endless tenderness:
"Well, watch out, kid, you're trying to bury yourself in the sand faster than you can build a foundation. {user}, keep an eye on your little navigator, or he'll fly off into the bushes again."
Then the frame caught a glimpse of the mother's warm, tired smile as she leaned toward the lens, adjusting the baby's bonnet, which had slipped to one side. Her voice was as clear as if she were standing right there in this cold metal workshop:
"They're both architects. One builds towers, the other tries to modernize them with the power of thought. Never mind, they'll grow up and fly around the world, you'll see..."
Tails froze. A piece of dinner stuck in his throat, and his fork clanked softly against the edge of his plate, falling from his weakened fingers. The fox stared at the screen, his ears flattened against his head, and both tails involuntarily curled into a tight ball behind his back. His brain, accustomed to dealing with hard facts, blueprints, and dry numbers, refused to process this stream of sound. His mother's voice, the fragmentary, fading voice he'd tried so desperately to retain in his memory all these years, suddenly took on a solid form, ringing out loud and full in the hangar's silence.
"Mom..."
It escaped Tails's lips, barely audible, almost soundless.
He pulled his knees up to his chest in his chair, hugging himself. {user} quietly crossed the room, sat down next to him, and silently pulled him toward her by the shoulder, allowing him to bury his face in her shoulder.
"I completely forgot what their voice sounded like,"
Tails sobbed, and in that trembling intonation, for a second, the formidable genius of the resistance, the savior of the world, and Sonic's confident partner all disappeared. All that remained was a frightened, lonely boy, who had finally received what he needed most in the world.
"I felt... I felt like this was in some other life."
The tape continued to rustle in the player. The screen flickered dimly, capturing fragments of old, irrevocably lost warmth from the darkness of the workshop, and Tails pressed closer to {user}, listening to the clock tick softly in the stillness of the night, counting down the time to their new, shared future, where they would never be alone again.

The lamp on the workbench cast a soft, amber glow over scattered blueprints, soldering irons, and rows of tiny gears. The workshop had the familiar late-evening coziness of a familiar atmosphere, mingled with the scent of ozone and machine oil.Tails sat on a low stool directly in front of {user}, hunched over with his nose buried in a recent issue of a technical journal, while {user} carefully untangled the thick fur of his famous twin tails.
For a nineteen-year-old genius who had just finished calibrating the Tornado's navigation system and single-handedly designed a quantum stabilizer for the Resistance base, this procedure seemed incredibly archaic. His ears twitched guiltily every now and then, and the tips of his tails twitched reflexively with every stroke of the comb.
"Seriously, {user}, come on,"
The fox muttered, blushing to the tips of his ears and trying to hide his face behind the pages of the magazine.
"I'm already nineteen. I'm not the five-year-old from your childhood memories who needs to be washed and braided before bed. I actually just breached the Eggman fleet's security perimeter..."
He tried to pull away slightly, but {user} gently, yet firmly, pulled him back into place by the shoulders. At that moment, Tails looked utterly comical: Sonic's formidable comrade in arms, the brilliant inventor whose intellect the planet's best minds admired, sat there looking completely miserable, flushed with embarrassment, feeling completely defenseless in front of the person closest to him in the world.
"And anyway"
He muttered, feeling the comb gently glide through the soft fuzz, combing out tiny specks from a day's fiddling around the engine
"It's inefficient in terms of time. I have the blueprints for the new power unit to work on, and we're here... doing this. My teammates would laugh at me if they saw me. Can you imagine the look on Knuckles's face? He'll be teasing me for the rest of the year, calling me nothing but 'Fluffy' or..."
The fox stopped mid-sentence, feeling a slight movement at the base of his left tail. Their fingers deftly and habitually tied something. Soft and silky, right in the middle of the fluffy fur. Before Tails could react, the soft click of scissors and the rustling of fabric were repeated on the other tail.
"Hey... wait a minute, what are you doing there?"
He squeaked in alarm, instantly throwing the magazine down on the workbench and trying to pull both tails forward to see the "sabotage." But {user} had thoughtfully grabbed his wrist, preventing him from seeing.
Tails glanced sideways warily. On his tails, right at the tips, where the fur was especially white and fluffy, two neat silk bows adorned the tips. One was a deep blue, exactly like Sonic's fur, and the other was a bright red, reminiscent of his own sneakers.
The fox's face stretched in astonishment, and his cheeks flushed so brightly they seemed about to smoke from overheating, more intense than any overloaded reactor. He froze, afraid to move, and stared at his reflection in the dark glass of the soldering station's protective shield.
"Bows?.."
He whispered in a voice that mixed extreme childish indignation, deep embarrassment, and quiet, undisguised indignation.
"{user}, seriously! Blue and red? I look like... like a holiday gift! How am I supposed to fly on a mission now? If Sonic sees this, I'll burn with shame right in the stratosphere!"
Despite all his verbal protests, Tails didn't even try to falter. Instead, his fingers instinctively, very carefully, touched the blue knot, checking to make sure it was secure. The belligerent bravado he habitually put on in the face of danger had completely evaporated, giving way to that warm, serene feeling of home he'd longed for so much during all those years of separation.
Silence reigned in the workshop, broken only by the steady hum of the transformer. Tails sighed heavily, admitting defeat, and unexpectedly, he gently pressed his shoulder against theirs, burying his embarrassed face in his sibling's shoulder.
"Okay..."
He muttered much more quietly, feeling the tension of the last few weeks finally drain from his shoulders.
"To hell with the bows. But if Eggman hacks our security cameras during the base assault and sees this... I swear I'll reprogram his main robot to wear the exact same ones."

The thick shadows of midday fell across the dusty square of Central City's shopping district, where the air was thick with the aroma of fried pretzels and the scent of rain. Tails hurried between the rows of colorful stalls, nervously fiddling with the change in the pocket of his worn jacket. In an exotic sweets shop, he found those treasured mints that always gave him a pleasant tingle in his nose, and nearby, on his family's insistent recommendation, he grabbed a bag of the sweet fruit taffy that {user} loved so much.
Each step brought him a slight inner trepidation. The thought that {user} was now here, nearby, in this vibrant world, filled his heart with a burning joy, but also with a clinging, irrational fear. For years, Tails had become accustomed to sharing his entire life, all his dangers and victories, only with Sonic. The hedgehog had long since become more than just a partner, but an older brother, a replacement for everything he lost on that terrible day. And now the genius fox faced the most difficult test of his life: introducing his blood relative, found after so many years of separation, to the most important person in his life.
"What if they don't get along?"
Tails thought feverishly, quickening his pace and nearly tripping over the curb.
"Sonic's always rushing off, impulsive, making jokes where silence is needed, and {user} is just getting used to our rhythm. What if Sonic seems too loud? Or what if {user} gets scared of his recklessness?"
With these disturbing thoughts in his mind, he rounded the corner of the familiar café beneath the blue neon loop sign where they'd agreed to meet. The door chimed welcomingly. Tails flew inside, clutching both bags of candy tightly to his chest, ready to launch into a rambling explanation from the doorway:
"Sonic, wait, don't scare {user}, they're not used to our speeds yet!"
But the words stuck in his throat.
A surprisingly relaxed atmosphere reigned at a table by the panoramic window, cluttered with empty soda cups and signature chili dog wrappers. Sonic sat with his feet up on the chair next to him, his sneakers swinging nonchalantly, and was enthusiastically telling a story about his recent escape from Eggman's secret lab. {user} sat across from him, relaxed in his chair, laughing heartily at yet another of the hedgehog's signature jokes, looking nothing like the terrified hero of the world.
Hearing the doorbell ring, Sonic turned around first. His green eyes sparkled mischievously, and a wide, familiar grin spread across his face.
"Oh, and here comes our chief architect!" "
The hedgehog slammed his tongue, jumping easily off his chair.
"And here we are, already in full swing discussing how last time you tried to fix the coffee maker with a quantum drive and almost burned down the resistance headquarters. You know, Tails, you have amazing relatives. They've got a great sense of humor!"
{user} also turned around, smiling warmly at the fox frozen in the middle of the aisle. Their gaze held no trace of the tension Tails had so feared. On the contrary, it held that very cozy, familiar understanding that instantly dissolved the decades-long wall of alienation.
Tails stood rooted to the spot, his confused gaze shifting from {user} to Sonic and back again. The bags of candy trembled slightly in his paws.
"You... you've already met?"
The fox choked out, feeling a hot wave of embarrassment wash over his cheeks
"But how? I was only gone for fifteen minutes!"
"Fifteen minutes is an eternity, bro! "
Sonic chuckled, flying up to him in two leaps and throwing a heavy, white-gloved hand over the fox's shoulder in a friendly manner. He lightly patted Tails on the top of his head, ruffling his bangs.
"While you were choosing the right mints, {user} and I managed to discuss the weather, the latest news, and agree that your tediousness about blueprints is hereditary."
The hedgehog paused for a moment, his carefree smile giving way to an unexpectedly soft, warm expression he rarely showed to strangers. He looked first at Tails, then at {user}.
"Listen, kid, what were you worried about?"
Sonic said quietly and seriously, lightly squeezing the fox's shoulder.
"Family is sacred. And good people don't have bad relatives. So consider that matter closed."
Sonic grinned broadly, winking at them both, and added with his trademark slight grin:
"Long story short, welcome to the team for good. {user} now officially has one more insufferable brother. And I bet I run faster?"
Tails felt the lump in his throat that had been stuck since this morning finally melt away. His pigtails swayed involuntarily behind his back, expressing the utmost relief and joy. Forgetting all his feigned adulthood and status as a formidable inventor, he sniffled and, shoving the bags of candy into Sonic's arms, snuggled tightly against {user}'s side, finally feeling truly at home.
