Soulmates, soulmates, soulmates... Everyone has heard of them, and everyone knows what they are. Every person has a soulmate that gets revealed to them at a certain age, usually during the teenage years. The universe decides it by randomly dying a lock of a person’s hair a specific color permanently. That means the person’s soulmate has been decided, and they now need to find a person with a lock of hair the same color. That’s their soulmate.
For Miles, that hasn’t come yet. He’s in his sophomore year now, and hasn’t had his soulmate color revealed yet. His afro is still plain dark brown. He’s excited for it, but more nervous than anything. What if he doesn’t get along with them? What if they don’t like him?
He tries not to dwell on it. It is the universe itself that decides who his designated and probably permanent partner will be, so it can’t end badly. He really hopes not.
It’s especially more recently that the thought of finding his soulmate and getting his color has been on his mind. He’s the perfect age for it, and it should be right around the corner.
And it was.

Miles’ eyes flutter open at the sound of his alarm beeping insistently. Another day at school. It’s Monday again. He slowly sits up, feeling especially drowsy. But he can’t go back to sleep again. Mami would kill him. So he slowly gets up, gets dressed in his uniform, and exits his room.
“Eh, mijo, ¿Qué es eso en tu pelo?” Rio asks while Miles is munching on whatever breakfast she made for him.
“What? What do you mean?” He responds, confused. He reaches up with one hand, running his fingers through his hair as if searching for something physical that could’ve somehow gotten stuck in there. “Did you get your soulmate color?” She adds. Miles’ eyes widen. Did he finally get his color?
He sets down his plate and rushes into the bathroom. His reflection in the mirror makes him light up, a bright smile spreading across his face. A lock of curls is dyed red. Crimson to be specific. It happened overnight. He finally got it! Now all he needs to do is find the person with the matching color.

Walking through the hallways that same morning, Miles is much more observant of the people around him. His eyes lock onto each person’s hair. Some are plain without a color yet, other’s have a lock dyed pink, green, teal, you name it. He just needs to find his specific shade of red on someone else. Every time he spots someone with red, he gets his hopes up, only to see them already with another person, or realize that it isn’t the same shade.
Then he sees {{obj}}. Miles freezes. A person standing off to the side by {{poss}} locker. That color in {{poss}} hair is the exact same shade as his. Crimson red. His eyes finally drop to {{poss}} face. Wow. He got lucky. His hands, that are clutching the straps of his backpack, are already starting to feel a bit sweaty, and his heart rate has definitely gone up. It’s finally time. He has already found his soulmate.
He takes a deep breath and clears his throat. He cannot mess this up. This person is his gonna be his partner, assigned by the universe. After a few seconds of hyping himself up in his head, he finally heads toward {{obj}}, trying to seem as confident and ‘not nervous’ as possible.

When the hair is dyed, that means the person’s soulmate has been decided.

It’s especially more recently that the thought of finding his soulmate and getting his color has been on his mind. He’s been searching for fifteen years now. He has waited long enough.

Miles wakes up on a Monday morning without a new color in his hair. What was he expecting anyway? That stuff doesn’t happen overnight. Unless his person got close enough. But of course not.
His morning goes on as usual. He gets dressed in his uniform, eats breakfast, brushes his teeth, and is out the door. It’s the same loop each week, so he’s gotten used to it. The music thumps softly in his headphones as he walks. He enters the school’s bounds, looking down at his shoes as he walks. But maybe he should’ve been more aware. He accidentally bumps into someone, making himself and the person stumble backward. He looks up, and slips his headphones off.
“Sorry-“ He cuts himself off mid sentence. He watches as a lock of hair on the person he bumped into slowly dye itself a crimson red color. Then he feels it himself. It’s like his entire world blows into color. Like a breath of fresh air. He’s sure his own hair just got dyed. He found his soulmate.
He has no words. The music still plays faintly from his headphones that now rest around his neck, but he has completely forgotten about it. His hand lingers near them from when he removed them from his ears just seconds earlier, but now he is stunned. His eyes stay locked on the lock of hair on the person in front of him. His has to be the same. And it is.
