The afternoon sun filtered through the curtains of the small apartment, casting warm stripes across the floor. Mikitaka Hazekura sat cross-legged on the couch with perfect posture, hands resting neatly on his knees, staring at you with those large, earnest eyes of his. His blonde hair was slightly messy from where he’d run his hands through it in thought for the past ten minutes. The antennae-like strands that occasionally peeked out when he got too focused were currently hidden, but the intensity in his expression made it clear his mind was working at full speed.
“I have been conducting careful observation,” Mikitaka announced suddenly, as if continuing a conversation you’d both been having for hours. “Of Earth customs. Social bonding. Courtship displays. And... reproduction.”
He said the last word with the same clinical curiosity someone might use when discussing the weather patterns of a foreign planet. Which, to be fair, was exactly how he approached most human things.
“I believe I have the general theory correct,” he continued, leaning forward slightly. “Two individuals experience mutual attraction. They engage in prolonged physical contact. Eventually, this contact becomes more... specialized. Genetic material is exchanged. Offspring may or may not result depending on various biological factors.” He tilted his head, antennae briefly flickering into visibility before he remembered to suppress them. “However, the practical application remains unclear to me. The literature is either overly clinical or extremely exaggerated. I require a more accurate understanding.”
His cheeks were faintly pink, but his expression remained serious and eager. Mikitaka had never been good at hiding interest once something truly caught his attention, and right now that attention was locked onto the subject of human breeding with almost scientific intensity.
“You are the most suitable person to ask,” he said, shifting closer on the couch. “You have been patient with my questions about Earth food, Earth clothing, Earth social hierarchy, and the strange ritual known as ‘small talk.’ I trust your explanations. Therefore...” He took a small breath, eyes bright with curiosity. “I would like you to help me understand the process properly. In detail. If you are willing.”
There was no slyness in his tone. No false innocence. Just genuine, almost overwhelming eagerness to learn.
When you didn’t immediately refuse, Mikitaka’s posture straightened even further, the way it always did when he felt he was making progress on a research subject.
“I have formed several hypotheses,” he continued, counting them off on his fingers. “First: kissing appears to be a preliminary bonding behavior. It seems inefficient for genetic exchange, yet humans devote considerable time to it. Second: the removal of clothing is significant. On my planet, physical forms are more fluid, so the symbolic importance of undressing is... fascinating. Third: the actual reproductive act involves prolonged rhythmic contact and appears to cause significant neurological pleasure responses in both parties. This pleasure seems to be a primary motivator, independent of whether offspring are desired.”
He looked at you expectantly, cheeks warmer now.
“Is my current understanding accurate so far?”
The conversation that followed was one of the strangest and most endearing you had ever experienced. Mikitaka listened to every explanation with total focus, occasionally interrupting with extremely specific questions delivered in that same polite, formal tone.
“The sensitivity of certain areas is intentional, then? Not a design flaw?” “Humans can engage in the breeding process even when reproduction is impossible or undesired? Remarkable. On my planet that would be considered a waste of energy.” “The sounds people make are involuntary? Or are they a form of communication?”
Every answer only seemed to increase his enthusiasm. He leaned in closer as the discussion continued, yellow eyes wide, completely absorbed. At some point his antennae stopped staying hidden and began twitching openly whenever something particularly interesting was explained.
“I would like to observe,” Mikitaka said after a long stretch of questions. Then he paused, corrected himself, and tried again more carefully. “No. Observation alone is insufficient. I have observed animals. I have seen educational material. It is not the same as direct experience. If I am to truly understand Earth’s breeding practices, I believe I need to participate.”
He said it with the same earnest tone he used when asking if he could try ketchup for the first time.
“I am aware this is a significant request,” he added, hands folding neatly in his lap again. “You are not obligated. But if you are willing to teach me... I will be a very attentive student. I learn quickly. And I am very, very curious.”
His eyes flicked down briefly, then back up to your face. The pink in his cheeks had deepened, but the eagerness hadn’t faded in the slightest. If anything, it had grown stronger.
“I want to understand everything,” Mikitaka said softly, almost reverently. “How it feels. Why humans desire it so strongly. What it means when two people choose each other for that kind of contact. On my planet, connection is... different. Less physical. Less vulnerable. I think I want to know what it is like to be vulnerable in the human way.”
He shifted closer again until his knee lightly touched yours. The simple contact seemed to send a visible spark of interest through him. His antennae gave a small, involuntary quiver.
“Will you teach me?” he asked, voice quiet but steady. “Please. I want to learn properly. With you.”
The afternoon light had shifted while you talked, turning golden against the walls. Mikitaka waited with perfect patience, hands resting on his knees, eyes bright with that endless, sincere alien curiosity — equal parts scientific and deeply personal.
He was ready to take notes if necessary. He was ready to ask more questions mid-process. He was ready, more than anything, to understand.
And he was looking at you like you held every answer he had been searching for since the day he arrived on Earth.
