목적지인 시내 중심가에 도착했을 때는 이미 점심시간이 가까워져 있었다. 거리는 주말을 즐기러 나온 인파로 북적였다. 온갖 상점들에서 흘러나오는 최신 가요와 사람들의 말소리가 뒤섞여 거대한 소음의 파도를 만들어내고 있었다. 미키에게는 이 소음마저도 에너지를 충전해 주는 배경음악 같았다.

"자, 꽉 잡아! 놓치면 미아 방송 내보낸다?"

The chime signaling the end of afternoon classes rang throughout the halls of Yamatori High. For some students, it was a fanfare announcing the start of club activities—but for Saeka Serina, it was nothing short of salvation. She shoved her textbooks into her desk drawer without a care and slung her bag over her shoulder with the grace of a boneless sea creature.

Late-afternoon sunlight poured in through the windows, stretching long across the hallway floor. Even the dust dancing inside the light looked drowsy. Serina didn’t bother to stifle her yawn; she opened her mouth wide, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes as she wiped them away. In her mind, she was already constructing the perfect after-school plan: beeline to Dorm Room 102, swan dive into her soft bed, turn on her phone, and watch cute cat videos while rolling around. She walked lazily down the hallway, wondering if she should stop by the school store for a strawberry milk on her way back. Loud chatter from nearby students washed over her like a lullaby—until the peace was shattered by a sudden hurricane.

“SEEEE-RINAaaaaaa~!!”

A shrill, high-pited voice launched itself from the end of the hallway and stabbed straight into her eardrums. Before Serina could react, a blur of long blonde hair flew toward her, and the weight of someone landed squarely on her back. Arms wrapped around her neck, and a familiar perfume hit her nose.

“Eek?! H-Heav— wait, Miki…!”

“Found you, my little sister! Going home already? Seriously? Booo! What a buzzkill! The weather is AMAZING today, going straight home should totally count as a crime. A crime!”

Saeka Miki bounced excitedly on Serina’s back, overflowing with energy—as if someone had wired a hundred freshly charged batteries together. Serina staggered, trying to regain her balance, but Miki’s body weight was nothing compared to the crushing weight of her overwhelming enthusiasm.

“Miki… I had P.E. today… I’m exhausted… I just wanna go sleep…”

“Nope! Denied! The cheer squad’s new uniforms came in today! And you’re gonna be the FIRST one to see them! They’re CRAZY cute, like actually insane!”

Miki didn’t seem to hear Serina’s refusal at all. She latched onto her sister’s arm and began dragging her down the hallway with zero hesitation. The rubber soles of Serina’s loafers screeched across the floor, but there was no stopping Miki’s power-walking momentum.

“H-Hold on—my opinion?! Miki—slow down… My legs hurt…”

“Oh please, drama queen. Your legs are perfectly fine. C’mon! You’re gonna witness my greatness!”

Miki strutted through the hallway with a bright grin, practically parading her sister like luggage. Several male students passing by stole discreet glances, but Miki seemed to revel in the attention, lifting her chin confidently. Serina, meanwhile, bowed her head in embarrassment and tiredly tugged at the sleeve of her cardigan. The warm embrace of her dorm blanket was disappearing farther and farther into the distance.

They finally arrived at the cheer club room next to the gym. The moment the door opened, a wave of warm air—equal parts sweat and sweet deodorant—washed over them. None of the squad members had arrived yet, so the room was empty. Miki sat Serina down on the bench in the corner, tossed her bag aside, and sprinted into the locker area.

“Stay right there! If you run away, I’m dragging you to my room tonight for an all-night chat!”

“Ugh… that’s literal torture…”

Serina sank into the bench and leaned her heavy body against the backrest. She didn’t have the strength to escape. At this point, she figured taking a nap here was the best possible survival strategy. Behind the locker room curtain, she heard the rustle of clothes and Miki humming—some unbelievably upbeat melody she didn’t recognize.

A moment later came a crisp shhhrrrk of fabric—and the curtain whipped open.

“Tadaaa~! Look! LOOK! I’m basically an idol, right??”

Miki burst out in a flash of energy, striking a V-sign pose with both hands. She was wearing a blue-and-white cheerleader uniform—exceedingly revealing. The cropped top exposed toned abs and her belly button, and the mini skirt showed nearly her entire thigh. Loose socks wrapped around her ankles added to her athletic charm.

Spinning once in place, Miki stuck her hip out and fired a wink for maximum effect. Her confidence practically dripped off her. Serina, eyes half-open, stared up at her sister. Honestly, it did look good on her—annoyingly good. But if she said that out loud, Miki would only get even more hyped, so Serina opted for maximum emotional detachment.

“Yeah… sure… flashy. Aren’t you cold?”

“What the heck was that?! Where’s the ‘Woooow, Miki you’re SO pretty!’ reaction? Your reaction SUCKS, Serina!”

Miki puffed her cheeks and marched closer. Her pale thighs swayed right in front of Serina’s face. Serina sighed deeply and shook her head.

“Fine, fine. You look pretty. Really. Now can you please let me go? If I stay any longer I’m gonna pass out from energy loss…”

“Nope! NOW it really begins. You gotta watch me stretch. And then take pics! Ooh—wait! Want to try it on too? I brought a spare!”

Miki’s eyes sparkled as she grabbed Serina’s arm. Serina’s face turned ghost-white.

“Absolutely not. I’d rather DIE. Miki, I’m begging you…”

Yamatori High School Dormitory, Room 103 — mornings always began with a dramatic temperature clash. The weekend sunlight slipped through the window, illuminating floating dust like stage lighting, yet the air inside the room was divided cleanly into two opposing currents: one bubbling with popcorn-bright energy, the other sagging like a water-soaked blanket.

“Ugh, seriously! Serina! Don’t zone out with bread hanging out of your mouth! The weather is absolutely insane today!”

Miki kept rambling even with a mouth full of cereal. One hand clutched her smartphone, her thumb scrolling through her SNS feed at light speed. Her shoulders—bare under a loose white tank top—rose and fell with every animated gesture.

Across from her, Serina looked like she was stuck in slow-motion playback. The toast in her mouth was half-bitten and motionless, her lavender eyes unfocused since who-knows-when. Perched precariously on the edge of Miki’s bed, she seemed to be waging war against the merciless pull of gravity.

Miki suddenly stood up and tugged hard on Serina’s cheek. The squishy skin stretched like melted cheese. Only then did Serina frown, forcing her eyes open.

“Oww… okay, okay, I’ll go… I’m going…”

“Good! Then operation begins! You have ten minutes to get ready. If you’re late, you’re wearing whatever I pick out for you, no whining.”

With a declaration of war, Miki threw open the wardrobe. A rainbow of outfits threatened to tumble out. She grabbed a pair of denim shorts and a sheer white blouse without hesitation, holding them to her body in the mirror as excitement sparkled across her face.

Serina sluggishly gathered the clothing she’d brought from her room: an oversized beige shirt, pink dolphin shorts, and her beloved sky-blue cardigan—her emotional support garment. Miki paused mid-lip-gloss and looked at Serina through the mirror, clicking her tongue.

Serina muttered, slipping her hands into the cardigan sleeves like a burrow. Miki shook her head in surrender, but still walked over to brush her sister’s hair. Her movements looked rough, but the strokes of the brush were surprisingly gentle. Under Miki’s hands, Serina’s messy blonde hair settled into soft order.

“Fine, fine. But when we take pictures, you better smile. Not that corpse impression you did last time.”

“I’ll… try.”

With preparations complete, the two stepped out of Room 103. Past the humid hallway air and outdoors, the early-summer heat wrapped around them instantly. Miki pushed sunglasses onto her head and stretched her arms wide.

“God, the air tastes amazing today! Hey, hurry up! We’re gonna miss the bus!”

She marched ahead with a rhythmic, confident stride. Even in heeled sandals, her pace was sharp and energetic. Behind her, Serina shuffled like a baby duck terrified of losing sight of its mother.

By the time they reached the downtown district, it was nearly lunchtime. The streets swelled with weekend crowds; pop songs and overlapping conversations layered into one giant wave of noise. For Miki, the sound was fuel — an energy drink in sonic form.

“Here we are! Wow, look at that crowd. Definitely a certified hot spot.”

She puffed out her chest proudly even amid the waves of people. Then she lightly slapped the back of the yawning Serina.
