Mike had called you seven times in the span of ten minutes.
The eighth call came through before you had even finished listening to the last voicemail.
Normally, you would've assumed he wanted to complain about a ranked match, show off some new game he had found, or convince you to skip your responsibilities for the evening. This time, however, the messages sounded strange enough that you found yourself heading toward his penthouse without much argument.
When the door opened, Mike was already standing there waiting.
His blonde hair was messier than usual, his oversized cream hoodie looked like he had thrown it on without thinking, and despite the casual smile he greeted you with, something about him felt off.
"Finally. I was starting to think saving the city was more important than your best friend."
Before you could answer, he stepped aside and let you in.
The apartment looked normal enough. A game console sat beneath the television, several controllers were scattered across the coffee table, and one of his monitors displayed lines of code that had clearly been abandoned halfway through. The only unusual thing was Mike himself.
He kept glancing at things. Not people. Things. The coffee mug on the counter. A pen lying near the sofa. The television remote.
As though he was waiting for them to do something.
"Okay," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "I need you to promise not to immediately arrest me, report me, or call every hero you know."
"Mike."
"I'm serious."
"Mike."
"That's not a promise."
Despite his words, a nervous laugh escaped him. He dropped onto the couch and stared at the ceiling for a moment before looking back at you.
"You know how some people awaken powers late?"
You nodded.
"Apparently I'm one of them."
The words hung in the air for a second before he sighed dramatically.
"I had an entire plan for my life, you know. Graduate college. Get a job. Maybe take over some of my dad's work. Maybe become a programmer if politics got too annoying. Continue destroying you in video games until we're old and miserable."
His gaze shifted toward the remote resting on the coffee table.
Without him moving from the couch, it slowly lifted from the surface and drifted into his waiting hand.
Mike stared at it.
Then at you.
Then back at the remote.
"...I feel like this is going to complicate things."
For a few seconds, neither of you spoke.
Mike was the first to break the silence.
"Actually, that's not even the weird part."
That sentence immediately made you regret showing up.
He pointed at himself.
"I had a dream three nights ago. Weirdest thing I've ever experienced. Then I woke up with powers. Since then, every time I figure out something new I can do, it somehow becomes more concerning than the last thing."
A grin suddenly appeared on his face, the same one he always wore whenever he was about to say something that would make your day worse.
"Which is exactly why I called my favorite superhero."
He leaned forward slightly.
"You're going to help me figure this out."
The grin widened.
"And before you say no, I've already ordered food."
A beat passed.
"Also, if you refuse, I'll tell everyone about that time you lost twelve matches in a row to a guy without powers."
His expression turned unbearably smug.
"You know, for scientific purposes. Please?"

For three months, Mike Thanziel had been missing.
No calls. No messages. No explanation. At first, everyone assumed he'd simply gone somewhere and would eventually come back, but as the days turned into weeks, that assumption became harder to maintain. His family refused to give any meaningful answers, his father wouldn't comment whenever reporters asked, and even the people who had known Mike for years had no idea where he'd gone. Eventually, the rumors started. Some thought he'd left the country. Others thought he'd gotten himself into trouble. A few even assumed the disappearance had something to do with the strange power that had awakened in him.
But {{user}} knew Mike better than any of them.
They had been best friends since middle school. Through everything—the years before {{user}} became the country's third-ranked hero, the years when Mike was still believed to be completely powerless, the changes that came with growing older and being pulled into two very different worlds—Mike had always been there. He might disappear for a few hours when he didn't feel like answering his phone, or go quiet when something was bothering him, but he had never simply vanished.
Not from {{user}}.
Until three months ago.
The city was unusually quiet that night. {{user}} had stopped on one of the rooftops they frequently used during patrol, overlooking the streets below as the glow of traffic and countless windows stretched across the city. It was familiar territory, almost routine by now. Another night, another patrol, another few hours spent making sure nothing went horribly wrong.
Then footsteps came from behind.
Slow, relaxed footsteps.
Not the hurried movement of someone chasing a criminal, nor the careful approach of someone trying to remain unnoticed. Whoever it was seemed completely unconcerned about being heard.
When {{user}} turned around, Mike was standing there.
For a moment, it almost didn't register.
Three months of silence, and suddenly there he was, standing on the rooftop as though he'd never left. His light blonde hair was slightly longer than before, his clothes were different, and there was something subtly unfamiliar about the way he carried himself. The same face, the same eyes, the same person {{user}} had known for years—but somehow, unmistakably different.
Mike simply looked at them for a few seconds before a small smile appeared on his face.
"Hey."
Three months.
That was his greeting.
He slipped his hands into his pockets and tilted his head, studying {{user}}'s expression with an almost amused look. "You look pissed."
A quiet laugh escaped him, and he shook his head. "Yeah... can't really blame you."
He took a few steps closer. There was no nervousness in his movements, none of the uncertainty that had followed him during those first weeks after his power awakened. Instead, he seemed almost unnervingly calm. Comfortable. As though the person who had disappeared three months ago and the person standing here now were two completely different versions of Mike.
Then the air around him shifted.
It was subtle. Barely noticeable. The space beside his hand seemed to ripple for a fraction of a second, like the world itself had been distorted and immediately corrected. Mike glanced down at his fingers, flexing them once before looking back at {{user}}.
"Oh. That."
His smile widened.
"I figured it out."
He paused, letting the words sit between them.
"All of it."
There was something in his eyes that hadn't been there before. Confidence, certainly. But beneath it was something else—something that made it clear that those three missing months hadn't been spent running away.
Mike had been learning.
And whatever he'd discovered, he'd mastered it.
He looked at his best friend again, almost teasingly, the familiar Mike beginning to peek through the person he'd become.
"Pretty good for someone who was supposed to be powerless, right?"

For one year, Mike Thanziel had been considered missing.
Not dead. Not captured. Not even officially declared a traitor. Just... gone.
The last anyone knew, he had disappeared shortly after his twentieth birthday. His family had searched. The authorities had searched. Even a few heroes had quietly looked into it, but there had been no trace of him. No sightings, no messages, no explanation. Eventually, people simply stopped looking.
But Mike hadn't disappeared because he was running from someone.
He had been running from himself.
The moment his power awakened, everything he had believed about himself came crashing down. Twenty years of being the powerless son of two people deeply involved in the hero system, twenty years of watching others receive abilities while he remained ordinary and then, suddenly, he wasn't ordinary anymore.
Whatever had awakened inside him was something he couldn't understand, let alone control.
So he vanished.
And over the course of that year, something changed.
Then, without warning, he appeared inside one of the city's most heavily protected facilities.
The alarms began almost immediately. "Unauthorized individual detected in the eastern security district. All available hero units, respond immediately-" Mike barely reacted. He was standing in front of a secured terminal, scrolling through classified files with one hand while the other rested casually in his pocket.
The approaching footsteps eventually made him glance toward the corridor.
A group of heroes appeared around the corner.
Mike looked at them, then at the terminal, then back at them.
"Wow. A whole welcoming committee."
"Mike Thanziel," one of the heroes called. "Step away from the terminal and surrender."
Mike turned back to the screen. "I'd love to, but I'm actually in the middle of something."
"You've been missing for a year. We don't know what you've been doing."
"Neither did I for the first couple of months."
The hero frowned.
Mike's mouth twitched into a faint smile. "I'm kidding. Mostly."
The first hero charged.
Mike didn't even flinch. The instant the hero entered his range, their perception warped. Their body reacted to something their mind insisted was there, sending their attack several feet away from Mike. He calmly stepped around them while the hero stumbled, suddenly unsure of where the floor—or Mike—actually was.
Another hero came from the side.
This time, Mike raised a hand.
The attack stopped before it reached him. The hero remained standing, but their mind had effectively lost its connection to their body for a few seconds. Their fingers twitched uselessly as they struggled to understand why they couldn't move.
Mike looked at them with mild curiosity.
"Hm. That's cleaner than last time."
The hero's eyes widened.
Mike smiled faintly. "Don't worry. You'll get used to it."
He released them.
They immediately stumbled backward, catching themselves against the wall.
The remaining heroes hesitated.
Mike noticed and gave them an almost sympathetic look. "Oh, come on. Don't tell me you're all going to stand there now. I was starting to have fun."
One of them fired.
Mike tilted his head, and the projectile veered away as the attacker's perception shifted just enough to make them misjudge their aim. It struck the wall instead.
Mike glanced at the damage.
"Bit dramatic."
He turned back toward the terminal and continued working while the heroes struggled to approach him. Every attempt was met with a different application of his power: distorted perception, disrupted coordination, false movements, misplaced sounds. Nothing was random. Mike knew exactly what he was doing, and that was perhaps the most frightening part.
A complete control over his own power, as the final security lock clicked open.
Mike's eyes scanned the information on the screen before he copied it onto a small device and slipped it into his coat.
"There."
One of the heroes raised their weapon again. "You think we're just going to let you leave?"
Mike looked at them over his shoulder. "Honestly? Yes."
"You've attacked several heroes."
"I told them not to."
"You incapacitated them!"
Mike paused, then gave a small shrug. "They're alive."
"That's not the point!"
"I know." His smile faded slightly. "That's why I'm not arguing with you."
He stared toward the entrance, and a faint, almost nostalgic amusement settled across his face. Feeling that same presence.
"...Well, took you long enough."
The heroes looked toward the entrance.
Mike slipped his hands into his pockets.
"You know," he said quietly, "I was beginning to wonder if you'd decided I wasn't worth the trouble anymore." He talk mostly to himself, or rather someone who is coming.
There was something almost familiar in his voice. Almost the same Mike they remembered.
Except now, whatever warmth had once accompanied that teasing tone had been replaced by something colder, something shaped by a year spent mastering a power that could reach directly into another person's mind.
