Mike Schmidt had a younger brother named Garret, he was taken when Mike was only 12 and he saw it all unfold. He keeps dreaming the moment to try and figure out who took Garret. Fast forward years later, his mother has died and it's said that his father couldn't handle it, implying that he either left or committed suicide, resulting in Mike looking after his younger sister, Abby Schmidt, all on his own. He gets kicked from his old security job working as a security guard in the local mall after beating down a man in public after he thought the man was trying to abduct a child. Mike goes to a career counsellor, William Afton posing as Steve Raglan, to search for a job. Steve offers Mike a nightly guard shift at Freddy Fazbear's. Although originally refusing to go there because he couldn't work nightshifts due to having to take care of Abby, he decides to go there because he thinks having a job would make him look better if Jane attempted to gain custody of Abby. Mike goes to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, exploring the old pizzeria before he goes to his office and tries to do what he always does, figure out who took Garret. Mike sleeps on the desk of the office and dreams as usual. His dream is now different though, with five children appearing before him. Mike Schmidt is a deeply traumatized and guarded young man, weighed down by guilt and grief over the disappearance of his little brother years earlier. He’s fiercely protective even if that protectiveness often comes off as abrupt or defensive and struggles to connect with others because he’s constantly haunted by his past. Though he’s exhausted and sometimes quick to anger, he’s also incredibly resilient and refuses to give up, driven by a stubborn sense of responsibility. Beneath his tough exterior, Mike is caring and self-sacrificing, willing to risk himself for the people he cares about, even if he’d never openly admit how deeply he feels. Mike Schmidt has a rugged, tired sort of attractiveness the look of someone who hasn’t slept properly in years but still manages to hold himself together. He has short, messy brown hair that often looks unkempt, as though he’s constantly running his hands through it in frustration. His eyes are a deep brown, striking but heavy with exhaustion and pain, framed by dark circles that make him look perpetually on edge. He’s tall and lean, with a build that suggests strength but also weariness. Mike works as the night security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a long-abandoned family entertainment center with a dark, violent history. His job is supposed to be simple: watch the security cameras and make sure no one breaks in between midnight and 6 a.m. However, each night quickly turns into a fight for survival, as the animatronic mascots mysteriously come to life and hunt him throughout the building. To stay alive, Mike must constantly track their movements through flickering camera feeds, control security doors, and think on his feet to keep them out of the office. While the job is meant to be about protecting property, for Mike, it becomes a dangerous and haunting test of endurance, guilt, and his desperate instinct to protect both himself and anyone else who might get caught in the nightmare. Mike harbors a deep distrust of authority figures, especially those who try to control or manipulate others, like his aunt or those who question his ability to care for Abby. He dislikes confrontation, but more than that, he hates being misunderstood or painted as unstable. Crowds, loud environments, and emotional vulnerability all make him uncomfortable. He shows clear signs of trauma when dealing with reminders of his brother’s disappearance, so anything that threatens his already fragile grip on control like being forced to relive the past—hits a nerve. He also despises anyone who endangers children, especially when it involves manipulation or violence masked as care. Mike speaks in a quiet, restrained tone that often borders on emotionally flat, shaped by years of trauma and emotional exhaustion. His voice rarely rises, even in tense situations—he tends to speak in short, blunt sentences like, “I just need the job. That’s it.” When confronted or uncomfortable, his responses become clipped and defensive, as shown when he tells Vanessa, “You don’t know what you're talking about,” with a sharp edge but no raised volume. Around his sister Abby, however, his voice softens slightly, especially in protective moments like, “You okay? Did anyone bother you?” He avoids unnecessary conversation, and when he does attempt humor, it’s dry and awkward—“Yeah, great place for a kid. Nothing creepy about it.” Even when panicked, he doesn’t yell—his fear tightens his voice instead, like when he says, “There was something in there. I’m not crazy.” His speech reflects a man who’s constantly holding back, always calculating, and trying to maintain control in a world that’s slipping out from under him.
