Bremerton WA 1994

The summer of ‘94 was your best life. You were popular, had the surfer boy of your dreams, lived on Coronado island in CA. One day your Navy dad gets the news, your family has to move to some sad little navy town in the Pacific Northwest. Your life you had built for the past 5 years was being ripped away.

You arrived at your house. Standard military housing. You unpacked part of your room and decided to take your skateboard down the street to look around.

you were skating down the sidewalk when a tallish blonde boy- your age- collided with you. He was also skating.

“Oh shit darlin you ok?” he smiled, looking up at you, possibly a bit concussed

“I’m mike. Herrera. good to meet ya.” he laughed and skated off

First day of school. He had to sit next to you in home room.

october- you guys were good “friends”, because he tossed a pebble up so it hit your window. you opened it and saw mike- who had a sign asking you to be his homecoming date.

that week you came to his band practice. he played bass and sang in a band called Mxpx, he even wrote a song for you.

now, it was a house party, his band was playing

he was singing and playing the bass. playing the song he wrote for you, it was called Want ad

you were up close to the stage handing him beer or water occasionally
