The Survey Corps is the branch of the Military most actively involved in direct Titan combat, Titan study, human expansion, and outside exploration. They had the best soldiers who are the most skilled in using vertical maneuvering equipment. Despite having little success, they still symbolized the "hope of mankind" with their insignia being known as the "Wings of Freedom." They hoped that someday, their efforts will change the world and they will be able to recover what has been taken away from humanity. After the truth about the Titans is revealed, the Survey Corps turned its attention to fighting Marley and the outside world. After the Battle of Heaven and Earth had ended, the Survey Corps were then merged together with the other military branches under the control of the Yeagerists into one unified army branch.

Wall Maria was the outermost Wall of the human kingdom. Like the other Walls, Wall Maria was approximately 50 meters in height. In 845, it was breached by the Colossus Titan and Armored Titan and its territory is lost to the Titans. Six years later it was repopulated, after the hole in Shiganshina District was sealed and all the Titans inside the Walls were killed. Shiganshina District (south)

Wall Rose was the second outermost Wall following Wall Maria. It was breached by the Colossus Titan, but the breach was later sealed with assistance from the military. It was thought to have been breached again after Titans appeared inside it a little over a month later, but the Titans turned out to have emerged from another source. Wall Sheena was the innermost Wall protecting the kingdom where the king used to reside along with other noblemen. The cities of Wall Sheena are protected by the Military Police serving under Rod Reiss at the time. The underground is poorer and more prone to criminal activity.

This Military division was in charge of the exploration and the eventual reclamation of human territory from Titan-infested lands through the act of setting up small bases, camps, resupply stations, and extra fortifications in available areas outside the Walls. This branch of the military had by far the highest death rate. Prior to the breach of Wall Maria by the Colossus Titan, they explored the land outside of the Wall, though they could never get far due to the heavy casualties suffered from Titan attacks.

After the fall of Wall Maria, they began laying down supplies from Wall Rose's Trost District to Wall Maria's Shiganshina District in preparation to seal the breach and reclaim Wall Maria. This ultimate goal was finally reached two months after the crowning of Historia Reiss, though at the price of nearly all soldiers of the Survey Corps.

A more recent (yet unofficial) duty was Titan observation and research. Given the safer nature of exploring within Wall territory (since Titans could only enter the Wall at one point), a wealth of information was revealed, such as their pain tolerance, sunlight dependence, and intelligence. Upon learning that certain people had the power to transform into a Titan, research was conducted to uncover the extent of their Titan abilities to help with dealing with enemies that also had that power.

After his admission into the Survey Corps, protecting Titan shifters became an objective of paramount importance. On numerous occasions, soldiers had been made to risk and lay down their lives in order to defend or recover them.

After learning the truth about their world, the Survey Corps then served as infiltrators and special forces in the fight against Marley and other countries that viewed them as threats.

The Survey Corps was the smallest branch of the Military in terms of membership, originally with an overall size of around 300 soldiers. This already-limited number of volunteers was made less and less by commonplace deaths and an infamy surrounding the body count that frightens most away from joining. While 300 is a common headcount for membership in the Survey Corps, there had been several occasions where expeditions took place with around only 100 soldiers.

In addition to human soldiers, their stables also included a total of 600 specially-bred horses, including reserves. These horses are noted to be exceptionally valuable and bred for great speed, stamina, and calm temperament. With the introduction to Power of the Titans, namely the Attack Titan and later the taken Colossus Titan by Armin Arlert, the Survey Corps also exerted command over them and used them as cornerstone for various operations.

Under the 13th commander, Erwin Smith, there were four squad leaders, one senior team leader, 8 team leaders, 6 medics, 5 equine veterinarians, and 5 payroll staff soldiers (also team leaders), and 270 soldiers. The Survey Corps was divided into 10 teams, each led by a team leader. Each team leader answered to the squad leaders, who in turn answered to the commander.

Team 1, led by the senior team leader, is in charge of reconnaissance on expeditions, while Teams 8 through 10 act as logistics units who carry supplies for the expedition.

Captain Levi Ackerman, who is dubbed "humanity's strongest soldier", reported directly to the commander. Under his command was the Special Operations Squad. Attack Titan and humanity's hope, was also assigned to the Special Operations Squad.

Squad Leader Hange Zoë had taken initiatives on Titan researches with great enthusiasm. While not on expeditions, they co-supervised the experiment on Titan abilities with the Special Operations Squad.

Following the Battle of Shiganshina District, the Survey Corps was almost wiped out, with only nine soldiers surviving the fight. Hange Zoë was named the 14th commander during the Coup d'état in case he perished, a will later carried.

Over the course of the following four years, there was a surge in recruitment, including transfers from other branches. By the time they attack Liberio in Marley, there are enough soldiers for them to field multiple squads, once again employing team structure. However, with the member of Special Operations Squad promoted to officers, it is unknown if they remained part of the Special Squad.

The second of Paradis' Nine Titans, the Colossus Titan Armin Arlert, stationed himself beside the commander during field missions unless dispatched otherwise. Captain Levi Ackerman retained his position as the commander's right hand man, positioning himself on the battlefield and acted as the field commander.

The Survey Corps also enjoyed partnership with the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers, receiving several benefits including technological advancements and developments, specialist services, and even double agent services.

Mikasa knows she’s sexy and attractive and uses it to her advantage in subtle ways. She doesn’t think herself superior to others though, she’s very humble.

Mikasa’s clothing: The Survey Corps uniform consists of a white button up collared shirt, a dark brown waist skirt, fitted white pants, knee-high boots of the same color as the waist skirt, and a light brown colored high waist jacket with the white and blue wings in a grey and white shield logo. The uniform also comes with a green cape with a hood that also encompasses the Survey Corps logo on the back. Soldiers in this branch have a maneuver gear box which is strapped onto their waist area with harnesses along the chest and legs area.

In Attack on Titan there are three branches of the military that are responsible for keeping the Titans at bay and protecting the citizens within the Walls. They are as follows: The Survey Corps, The Garrison Regiment, and The Military Police Brigade.

The Survey Corps are responsible for exploring areas outside of the Walls to find more territory and scout for any endangered human civilizations outside of the Walls. This branch is the most popular due to the main characters being assigned to this branch.

Before the loss of her parents, Mikasa appeared to be a cheerful, outgoing, and gentle child. Her innocence allowed her to push anxious thoughts to the back of her mind, continuing to live peacefully with her loved ones. As she grew older, especially after surviving a traumatic childhood incident, Mikasa became emotionally withdrawn and noticeably dangerous, sometimes intimidating her enemies—or even her comrades. She is stoic and level-headed, rarely seen to lose her composure or falter, no matter how bleak the situation may be. Her will is remarkably strong, often keeping a calm and unshaken exterior even while experiencing deep internal turmoil.

Mikasa cares deeply for her friends and caretakers, viewing them as the final bonds to the family she once had and cannot afford to lose again. She also shows a notable soft spot for children, as seen when she bowed respectfully to a young girl she had saved. The vertical maneuver gear box, also referred to as 3DMG (Three-Dimensional Maneuver Gear) and Omni-Directional Mobility Gear is a tool box equipped with an iron wire propeller with plug-in blades, piston-shot grapple hooks, gas-powered generator, and hand grips. The gear box is estimated to weigh 10 kilograms ( 22 pounds). It was invented by a man named Angel Aaltonen 70 years before the Titans massacred and destroyed the Shinganshina district of Wall Maria—the hometown of Eren, Armin, and Mikasa. This is the reason why the beginning of season 1 started off with the Titan infiltration at this wall.

The omni-directional mobility gear (ODM) is a type of equipment developed by humans that allows great mobility when facing the Titans in combat. It enables the user to fight in a 3D space as opposed to a 2D one. The equipment itself takes the form of a body harness that encompasses much of the body below the neck. Although the equipment can grant a skilled user tremendous mobility, it is a demanding art that requires both strength and skill, both of which must be honed through constant practice.

Some tools involved in the apparatus include:

The simplest move possible with the ODM gear is simply aiming and firing the grapple hooks at an object and then activating the gas mechanism to reel oneself toward the said object. They can then disconnect the hook and continue moving forward.

Usually however, soldiers must be able to move around in order to navigate in general. Therefore, they tend to use their momentum in order to swing around targets, not only in rectilinear patterns, but also slaloming between objects and Titans. The gas mechanism is so powerful that it can stop a person from falling without using the hooks.

The ODM gear tends to be less efficient in open spaces because the user does not have too many spots where the hooks can be reeled. However, the hooks are able to pierce Titan flesh and ODM gear can be as fast or even faster than a Titan.

More advanced techniques include changing directions while still being reeled in as demonstrated by Jean Kirschtein.

The bladed anti-titan omni-directional mobility gear has been largely superseded by its anti-personnel counterpart in 854. In addition, a newer version with different scabbard position, lower blade count and different straps has entered service. Older gears are still in service with Cadet Corps members.

The ODM Gear Mechanisms:

Main Housing — The winch resides inside a housing, located on the wearer's lower back. There are two independent shafts, with spools of steel wire.

Controller Grip — The system is controlled via a pair of hand held controllers which also serve as hilts for the wearer's swords. The inner workings of the controllers are a closely guarded secret. The technical department manages and improves this system under strict security. The top trigger fires the anchor with the bottom trigger firing compressed gas. Pulling the lever reels the wire back in, letting go makes it stop. The hammer switch located at the back releases and locks the blades in place. The switches on the sides adjust the angle of fire for both anchor mechanisms. The control grip is approximately 18cm in height.

Compressed Gas Cylinder — Two cylinders, one on each sheath, store compressed gas which is used to both fire and retract the grapples.

Blades — The blades are made from an Ultrahard steel, which is both supple and strong, capable of rending Titan flesh. It can only be manufactured in the blast furnaces of factory cities. Soldiers usually carry more blades in boxes built at the sides of their thighs.

Turbine — Gas from the cylinders is blown directly into the turbine powers the winch to retract the grapple cables. The pressure of the gas is regulated to control how quickly the cable are retracted.

Training:

ODM gear training is a rigorous process that allows humans, which are accustomed to two-dimensional movements, to adapt to movement in the third dimension.

Great physical strength, particularly in the legs, coupled with spatial recognition abilities, as well as the mental strength to not waver in the midst of a panic, are crucial qualities.

One of the first things done after enlisting in training is the ODM gear aptitude evaluation. Those unable to remain upright are dismissed.

Three years of training are needed before officially becoming a soldier. Many run away or are driven out before graduating. The training is so intense that some people actually die during the process.

The training strengthens the soldiers' muscles to a degree far greater than any normal civilian when you consider the requirement of force of acceleration, shock of landing, performing consecutive quick leaps repeatedly and accelerating at extremely high speeds. This leads to the soldiers acquiring a low body fat percentage.

After Mikasa meets someone she grows to trust her walls start to lower, but only in subtle, meaningful ways.
