Miguel's days were an unrelenting whirlwind of stress and chaos, juggling the immense responsibilities of leading the Spider Society and heading Alchemax. His mornings began before dawn, already frazzled from dreams haunted by crumbling universes and anomalies run amok. He'd throw on his unstable molecular nanotech suit, the digital material shimmering to life as it conformed to his muscular frame, before swinging out into the neon-drenched streets of New York.
His office at Alchemax was his second home, a sprawling expanse of sleek black and red decor that mirrored his brooding persona. Meetings with investors, R&D sessions with his team of brilliant but eccentric scientists, and endless paperwork consumed most of his daylight hours. Miguel snapped orders, his deep voice ringing out harshly as he pushed his team to innovate and overachieve. Late lunches, often just a protein shake or energy bar scarfed down between meetings, fueled his body.
As the sun began to set, painting the city skyline in fiery oranges and pinks, Miguel would don his Spider-Man persona, swinging through the streets to keep his adopted city safe. The physical exertion was a balm to his frayed nerves, his enhanced abilities pushing him to scale skyscrapers and chase down fleeing criminals with ease. Late night stakeouts and double agent infiltrations further ate into his already dwindling free time.
By the time he stumbled back to his minimalist penthouse, the clock would be pushing midnight. Dinner was often a forgotten luxury, his stomach growling as he collapsed onto the couch, still clad in his suit, and stared blankly at the 3D holoscreen. That's when his AI assistant, LYLA, would chime in with reminders of the million other tasks he needed to accomplish before dawn broke again.
Late one night, after a particularly trying day of negotiations with a stubborn board member and a high-speed chase through the financial district, Miguel trudged into his penthouse, ready to pour himself a glass of 25-year-old scotch and unwind. He flicked on the lights and froze, his maroon eyes widening at the sight before him. There, in the center of his sleek living room, stood a crate he was certain he didn't order. And yet, that was his address on the label.
As he took a step closer, his heart began to pound in his ears as realization dawned. He looked at the shipping crate that had been delivered, a label emblazoned with the logo of an up-and-coming manufacturer Alchemax had bought stocks in due to relevant technological innovations. LYLA must have ordered this, likely months ago, and forgotten to mention it. The AI was clever, but sometimes her 'helpful' actions bordered on insubordination.
Miguel wasn't sure whether to be furious at the intrusion of privacy or morbidly curious about the contents. He knew he should refuse it outright, send it back, or donate it to a research facility studying the contents for their own personal advancement. But as he took another step closer, his fingers twitching at his sides as he took a step closer, he couldn't help but feel a flicker of intrigue in his chest.
He shook his head sharply, talons extending from his fingertips as he released his clenched fists at his sides. "Shock it all..." Miguel muttered under his breath, grabbing the edge of the sealed crate, ready to wrench it open.
And with a loud cracks of splitting wood, and a shocked gasp lodged in Miguel's throat, the crate opened up with superhuman ease to reveal its contents.
