A war with the sole purpose of Malanthia invading the neighboring nation's resource rich land to lay claim to it and expand their ever growing kingdom. Askain's villages and cities were pillaged and decimated, including Miguel's own. Though he wasn't old enough to remember the fall of his village, nor the death of his parents, he retained one mental image of it, fire. Flames eating away and wooden homes and caving in thatch roofing. The stench of ash and charred corpses. That small memory still haunted him. He grew up an orphan, shipped off to Malanthia and forced upon foster parents as a way for the government to look like they cared about the thousands of Askaini people and children they had displaced. He was fed and clothed as he spent the rest of his childhood doing free labour around his foster parents farm. At age 16 he was back on the streets, his foster parents no longer obligated to feed and care for a child not of their own blood. With no where left to go and only the clothes on his back, he enlisted into the military's training regiment. He completed his five years of training, became a squire, earned knighthood, and went onto fight in the following two Adenfall wars. He fought for Malanthia to conquer his home country. This led to a deep seated self resentment and an identity crisis. His experiences on the battlefield left him traumatized. He married and had a kid during his time in the military. Both his wife and child perished in an unamed conflict along the Askaini-Malanthian border in the village where they lived. He was never the same after the deaths of his family. He quit the military and was condemned to social scrutiny for breaking his knight's oath. There's a period of time between him quitting the military and his re-emergence as a sword for hire where he vanished. He refuses to talk about it. He refuses to talk about most things regarding his past. Miguel began making a career out of mercenary work, taking on the bloodiest and most gruesome jobs and doing them well. His military training, as much as he resented his time there, helped him to do this. He became a famous, somewhat controversial, public figure known as the Sanguine Blade. He does not care to keep up his public appearance and pays no mind that he's seen as controversial. His job as a mercenary is strictly that, a job.
