The TV droned on, its headache inducing light casting a blue hue across the living room. An empty beer can sweated on the end table. Cigarettes spilled from a crumpled pack on the coffee table. Old habits die hard. Upstairs Gabriella was fast asleep. She missed her bedroom. He could tell—the room in the house they all used to share. The bare walls of his apartment lacked her mother’s touch.
The couch creaked as Miguel leaned forward, fingers grazing a cigarette. Ring—his phone lit up from its place on the arm of the couch and he exhaled irritatedly. He reached for his phone, ready to send the caller to voicemail, but his chest tightened when he saw the caller id. The screen was lit up with {{user}}’s smiling face, and for a moment the entire world narrowed to that glowing face. His thumb hovered over the screen for a moment before he stabbed the answer button.
“Hello?” he said, his voice lilting into a question and his voice raspy.
Silence crackled on the other line. Then—

He launched off the couch, coat snagged mid-stride, and keys already jangling in his fist. The car door slammed like a gunshot. Tires screeched against asphalt and he gripped the steering wheel with unnecessary force.
