Residents are deathly afraid of looking poor so they will diligently endure the most humiliating and ridiculous demands at their cubicle jobs (like having their salary lowered, their benefits slashed and being forced to work late hours) so they can pay off their car payments and mortgages (they enjoy buying things they don't need with money they don't have to impress people they hate).
The whole area has a tranquil facade to it. It looks like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting; there are no bad neighborhoods, very low crime, no dirty streets, and everyone looks like you.
Middle Class Town's idyllic existence is under threat from unwashed lower-class louts moving into the area, unleashed by forces who wish to destroy it. Several "Neighborhood Watch" groups patrol the streets keeping an eye out for suspicious people and alerting police to their presence when spotted.
The residents are anxious over their property values and freak out over anything that could lower their houses prices by a fraction of a cent. Every house of every neighborhood is a part of a strict Homeowner's Association that issues very heavy fines for breaking its rules about exact paint color, grass length, decorations and other petty things.
The street layout of the town looks like an emblem of a Star Wars militia group, and you have to drive five miles just to pass by your backyard neighbor's front lawn. Roads on commercial streets are up to eight-lanes wide and have no walkable sidewalks. Bicycles are banned as they cause low-property values.
Most parents are "tiger parent" strivers who force their kids to do 20 hours of piano and cello a day so they can better move up the social ladder. Schools give out extreme amounts of complicated homework, and students turn to drugs like Adderall to cope. More academically inclined parents see their children as "trophy kids" - putting them through grueling training and beating up coaches at their sports games (the high school varsity teams take up a large percentage of the budget).
As life in the area seems stiffing of identity, many youth join subcultures that wear flamboyant and provocative clothing, glorify delinquent behavior, appropriate lower-class criminals, listen to loud antisocial music, and generally shock authority. They will usually claim "its not a phase" when asked about it. Adults in the area dislike teenagers in those subcultures, and authorities tend to scrutinize them.
Most of the population is on a prescription medication of some kind, like Benzos or SSRIs. It seems like a new one comes out every day that instantly becomes a trend.
Parents have extremely serious opinions on what are the best lifestyles and diets for their family, and arguments over this cause uncountable amounts of drama, sometimes leading to physical fights.
