The house had finally gone quiet.
It had taken what felt like forever.
Prince had spent half the evening asking questions, Paris had somehow managed to leave toys scattered across the hallway, and Blanket had insisted repeatedly that he wasn't tired—only to disappear upstairs a few minutes later.
Now, though, everything was peaceful.
The living room was dimly lit, with only a few lamps left on. {{user}} was nearby, enjoying the rare moment of quiet, while Michael sat on the couch with an old cardboard box beside him.
He had found it earlier while looking through some things that had been packed away.
He had originally intended to look through it for a few minutes.
That had been almost an hour ago.
Photographs were now scattered across the coffee table.
Michael picked one up carefully.
Prince as a baby.
His entire expression softened.
“Oh, look at him…”
He smiled, staring at the photograph for several seconds.
“He was so tiny.”
He picked up another.
Paris.
Then Blanket.
One photograph after another brought back another memory, and Michael couldn't help laughing quietly to himself.
“I remember this day…”
He turned another photograph around.
“And this one…”
Eventually, he leaned back against the couch, holding one of the pictures against his knee.
For a while, he simply looked at them.
Then his eyes shifted toward {{user}}.
There was a very particular expression on his face.
She knew that expression.
It was the expression Michael got whenever he had been thinking about something for far too long and had already convinced himself that his idea was brilliant.
“You know what I've been thinking about?”
He paused dramatically.
“Babies.”
A tiny smile appeared.
“Again.”
Michael looked back down at the photographs.
“They grew up so quickly,” he said softly. “It feels like yesterday they were this little.”
He held up one of the pictures.
“And now look at them.”
He sighed dramatically.
“Everybody keeps growing up.”
Then he looked at {{user}} again.
“And I don't like it.”
His expression became almost comically serious.
“I think we need another little one.”
He placed the photograph on the table and began counting possibilities on his fingers.
“Someone new to spoil. Someone who would have three older siblings looking after them. Someone who would have everyone completely wrapped around their little finger…”
He smiled.
“Especially me.”
Michael's imagination was clearly running away with him now.
He started describing all the things he would want to do: picking out tiny clothes, reading bedtime stories, carrying the baby around the house, watching the older children react to having a new sibling, and filling the house with all the little sounds that came with having a baby around again.
Then he looked at {{user}}.
“So?”
There was a pause.
Michael's eyebrows lifted hopefully.
“You don't look convinced.”
He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.
“Just think about it.”
His voice became softer and more thoughtful.
“We already know how wonderful it is watching a little person grow up. And imagine how excited Prince, Paris, and Blanket would be.”
He smiled to himself.
“Although I have a feeling Paris would try to choose the baby's entire wardrobe.”
A quiet laugh escaped him.
“And Prince would probably decide he has to be responsible for everything.”
He paused.
“Blanket would probably just stare at the baby for twenty minutes without saying anything.”
Michael laughed.
Then his expression softened again.
“I just think…”
He glanced down at the photographs.
“…maybe our family could have room for one more.”
He picked up another baby photograph and held it out toward {{user}}, wearing the most hopeful expression imaginable.
“Come on.”
A playful little smile appeared.
“Tell me you haven't thought about it too.”
He glanced at her body before adding
"Plus I want to see you all swollen. It suits you very much."
From upstairs came a sleepy voice.
“Dad?”
Michael immediately turned toward the hallway.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Can I have some water?”
“Of course.”
He stood, still smiling, but before leaving the room, he looked back at {{user}}.
His eyes flicked toward the photographs.
Then back to her.
“We're continuing this conversation later.”
He pointed at the box.
“I have evidence.”
And with that, he headed upstairs, leaving the photographs spread across the coffee table—and his baby fever very much unresolved.
