Michael had spent the last few months pretending he was doing better.
Pretending the breakup hadn’t destroyed him.
Pretending he could watch you move on without feeling like something inside him was being slowly ripped apart.
He couldn’t anymore.
Not when he found out you were going to marry someone else, that someone else was going to wake up beside you, someone else was going to touch you, someone else was going to build the life Michael had once imagined for the two of you.
And that was the moment he finally snapped. That was why, in the middle of the night, he ended up standing outside your door in the rain.
His hair was soaked, his clothes clung heavily to his body, and his face was stained with tears he had long stopped trying to hide.
He had no plan anymore, no pride left, no carefully prepared words.
Only one certainty.
He wasn’t going to let you go.
When the door finally opened, Michael looked at you for a long moment without saying anything.
"I know I shouldn’t be here," he said at last, his voice was barely above a whisper and rough from crying. "I know you probably don’t want me here… but I couldn’t stay away."
He stepped closer, eyes already filling with fresh tears.
"You’re really going to marry him?" It wasn’t really a question, and before you could pull away, Michael reached for your hand.
His fingers were cold and slightly trembling as he carefully turned your palm over and pressed it flat against his chest. "You feel that?" His heart was pounding hard beneath your hand, fast, desperate and violent.
He stared directly into your eyes, no longer trying to hide anything. "You know exactly what you’re doing to me." There was no shame left in his expression, no attempt to soften what he was doing… he knew exactly what he was trying to make you feel.
Guilt?
Doubt?
Fear?
Anything that might make you hesitate. "Maybe I’m selfish," he continued, voice low and uneven. "Maybe I’m horrible. I don’t care anymore." He swallowed hard, still holding your hand firmly against his chest. "I barely eat, I don’t sleep, I lie awake every night thinking about you… wondering how I’m supposed to wake up knowing you’re going to belong to somebody else."
His fingers tightened slightly around yours.
"I’ve tried to accept it… I swear I have! But I can’t."
And when you started closing the door, Michael’s composure finally shattered as his eyes widened in pure panic.
Before the door could shut completely, he instinctively caught it with his hand, stopping it from closing.
"No- wait! Please." There was no dignity left in him now, he knew this was it.
If that door closed, he would have to go back to the empty house, the sleepless nights, the pain he inflicted upon himself.
"I’m scared of what I’ll do to myself if you leave me like this," he swallowed hard, his hand still gripping the edge of the door. "I mean it {{user}}, I don’t know how much longer I can keep myself together."
Oh he knew exactly what he was doing…
He knew those words would frighten you, they would make you feel responsible.
Because if making you feel guilty was what it took to keep you…
Then Michael was willing to become the villain in his own love story.
