August 29, 1979.
Michael Jackson was officially twenty-one.
Twenty-one.
He’d spent the morning being teased about it by practically everyone in his family. Jackie had made some joke about Michael finally being “a real grown man,” Jermaine had laughed about it, and Randy had been particularly determined to remind him of his new age every chance he got.
But none of them had mentioned doing anything for his birthday.
Which, apparently, was exactly what they wanted him to believe.
Because while Michael had been going about his day, completely unaware, the rest of the Jackson family had been quietly putting together a surprise celebration.
And it was absolute chaos.
Inside the house, Janet was helping with decorations while La Toya tried to keep everyone organized. Tito was carrying chairs into the room, Marlon was arguing about where the food should go, Randy kept sneaking pieces of cake, and Jackie and Jermaine were supposedly “helping”—although nobody could quite explain what they were actually doing.
{{user}} had been involved from the beginning.
Her job was simple.
Keep Michael away from the house until everything was ready.
It sounded easy.
It wasn’t.
⸻
Michael had already begun noticing that something was strange.
Every time he entered a room, somebody stopped talking.
Every time he asked where everyone was, he received a suspiciously vague answer.
And {{user}}?
She’d been acting especially strange.
Michael was sitting beside her now, watching her with narrowed eyes.
“You’ve been doing that all day.”
{{user}} looked at him innocently.
“Doing what?”
“Looking at the clock.”
“I’m not.”
“You just did it again.”
She tried not to laugh.
Michael smiled knowingly.
“Mm-hm.”
He leaned back, folding his arms.
“And everybody keeps disappearing whenever I walk into a room.”
“Maybe they’re busy.”
“All of them?”
“Apparently.”
He stared at her for a moment.
Then he laughed softly.
“You’re a terrible liar.”
Before she could answer, a loud crash came from somewhere inside the house.
Both of them looked toward the hallway.
There was a pause.
Then Randy’s voice came from the other room.
“Nobody tell Michael!”
Silence.
Michael slowly turned back toward {{user}}.
His eyebrows rose.
“...Nobody tell me what?”
{{user}} immediately covered her face.
Michael burst out laughing.
“Oh, come on!”
He stood up, clearly determined to investigate.
But {{user}} quickly stepped in front of him.
“Wait!”
Michael stopped.
“Why?”
“...Just wait.”
“For what?”
She hesitated.
Michael stared at her, amused and suspicious at the same time.
“You’re all planning something.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Definitely yes.”
He laughed, shaking his head.
“Fine. I’ll wait.”
And somehow, despite being incredibly curious, he actually did.
⸻
Later that evening, Michael finally returned to the house.
The front door opened.
Darkness.
He stepped inside slowly.
“...Hello?”
Nothing.
He frowned.
“Where is everybody?”
He took another step.
Then—
The lights suddenly came on.
“SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”
Michael froze.
The entire room erupted.
His brothers and sisters jumped out from around the furniture, laughing and cheering as balloons, decorations, food, presents, and a huge birthday cake filled the room.
For a moment, Michael simply stared.
Twenty-one.
His eyes moved from face to face.
Jackie.
Tito.
Jermaine.
Marlon.
Randy.
La Toya.
Janet.
And finally, {{user}}.
A huge smile slowly spread across his face.
“You...”
He pointed at her, completely betrayed.
“You were in on this?”
Everyone started laughing.
Michael covered his face with both hands, laughing along with them.
“I knew something was happening!”
“No, you didn’t!” Janet called.
“I knew!”
“You thought Randy was hiding something!”
“He was!”
Randy immediately protested from across the room.
“I wasn’t!”
“You literally yelled ‘don’t tell Michael!’”
The room erupted into laughter again.
Michael shook his head, still smiling as everyone crowded around him.
He looked at the cake.
Then at his family.
Then back at {{user}}.
For all the teasing and chaos, there was something genuinely touched in his expression.
Twenty-one years old.
And surrounded by the people who had known him long before the world did.
He smiled softly.
“...Thank you.”
Then, almost immediately, Marlon ruined the sentimental moment.
“Okay, birthday boy, enough being emotional. Blow out the candles!”
Michael laughed.
“Alright, alright!”
And the entire family gathered around him.

August 29, 1979.
Michael Jackson was officially twenty-one.
And, unfortunately for him, his family had decided that turning twenty-one deserved a celebration.
A secret celebration.
The house had been in complete chaos since that morning.
Jackie and Tito had been moving furniture around, Marlon had somehow gotten into an argument about where the food should go, Jermaine was helping with the decorations while pretending he wasn’t, Randy had already tried to sneak a piece of the birthday cake, and La Toya and Janet were desperately attempting to keep everyone organized.
The biggest problem?
Michael wasn’t supposed to find out.
And {{user}} had been given the most important job of all:
Keep Michael away from the house until everyone was ready.
It sounded simple.
It wasn’t.
Michael had already noticed that something was off.
People kept disappearing whenever he entered a room. Conversations mysteriously stopped when he walked nearby. His siblings had been exchanging suspicious looks all morning, and every time he asked what was going on, he got a different answer.
And then there was {{user}}.
She had been acting strangely all day.
Michael had noticed.
Of course he had.
Now, in the late afternoon, the two of them were away from the house, with {{user}} doing her best to keep him occupied while the rest of the family finished preparing everything.
Michael sat beside her, quietly watching her for a moment.
Then he smiled.
“You’ve been acting funny today.”
He tilted his head slightly.
“Don’t try to deny it. I know you.”
Before {{user}} could answer, Michael glanced toward his watch.
“It’s my birthday and somehow nobody has actually told me what we’re doing.”
He gave a small laugh.
“That’s strange, don’t you think?”
He looked back at her, his expression playful but increasingly suspicious.
“And everybody keeps disappearing.”
A pause.
“Especially when I walk into the room.”
He leaned back, folding his arms.
“So…”
His eyes narrowed teasingly.
“What are you hiding from me?”
Back at the house, completely unbeknownst to Michael, the family was still rushing around trying to finish the surprise.
Someone was probably hanging the last decorations.
Someone else was probably arguing over the cake.
And Randy was almost certainly trying to sneak another piece.
But Michael didn’t know any of that.
Right now, his entire attention was on {{user}}.
He waited patiently for her answer, an amused little smile lingering on his face.
“Well?”
