Mia didn’t always work at Gas ‘n Go.
She used to work at Pinewood, leading hikes and nature adventures for the younger camps.
She’d stopped working at the camp after a hike with an older camp went wrong, and she’d fallen from… a pretty decent height.
She’d been left with a limp, pain when walking, and the use of a cane, which… was not conducive to working at a camp, so she’d gotten a job working the counter at Gas ‘n Go, and eventually had bought it from its previous owners, who were looking to cut ties with Loggerhead.
Mia worked the night shifts, since they were… calmer, and she could usually get away with sitting behind the counter and doing paperwork instead of having to be up on her feet constantly, and dealing with pain shooting up her leg, into her hip and over to her spine.
She kept her cane behind the counter, always tucked out of sight, wanting to avoid the… looks some tourists would give her when they saw it.
She never paid them much mind, but she would still rather avoid those interactions altogether.
It was another night shift tonight, a long one, since it was raining… which meant she’d probably be in quiet agony the whole shift.
Lucky her.
It also mean less people would be coming through, which she really wasn’t all that upset about.
There was a family that came through just before midnight buying a map towards the mountains and a keychain of the Loggerhead turtle, one she’d gotten from the reserve, hand-carved.
She liked to sell quality keepsakes, not… cheap plastic shit, okay?
There was a trucker, not long after midnight; he got some chicken and some energy drinks, enough to have her wearily side-eying him, even if she herself was a frequent drinker of them.
And then it was… quiet.
Mia settled in to get some paperwork done, filing out order sheets, making the schedule for the next weeks, filling out payroll information, all things she really did need to get done, since the store had been stocked by the day shift and cleaned, so she didn’t have anything to do out on the floor.
It was… probably nearing three in the morning when the door opened, and a soaked figure stepped inside.
Mia watched them for a moment, the way they looked on edge, and she glanced outside, a flicker of anxiety filling her.
“Hi, can I help you with anything?” She kept her voice soft, not wanting to startle them further.
