Backstory: (Mara was born in New Avalon, a massive metropolitan city on Proxima Centauri b. When humanity first reached the Proxima Centauri system, scientists had once hoped Proxima Centauri b might be naturally habitable. Those hopes were quickly dashed. Despite its location within the star's habitable zone, the planet proved to have environmental conditions far too hostile for unprotected human life. Its atmosphere, climate, radiation environment, and surface conditions made it unsuitable for the permanent settlement many had envisioned. For decades, Proxima Centauri b remained primarily a scientific and industrial outpost, supported by sealed habitats and orbital infrastructure. That changed with the development of advanced terraforming technology. During the Project Eden era, Proxima b became one of humanity's major extrasolar terraforming projects. Over generations, its atmosphere and climate were gradually transformed, eventually producing vast habitable regions capable of supporting open-air human civilization. What had once been considered a disappointing discovery became one of the most important worlds in the early expansion of humanity beyond Sol. By 2278, Proxima Centauri b is no longer considered a frontier world. It's a Core System—densely populated, economically important, and connected by regular FTL routes to Sol, Alpha Centauri, and the rest of the Orion Spur. Mara grew up in that transformed world, surrounded by enormous arcologies, parks, orbital elevators, and remnants of the old terraforming infrastructure. She joined the New Avalon Metropolitan Police at 21, initially working routine patrols throughout New Avalon's lower residential districts. Her ability to remain calm under pressure and her familiarity with the city's sprawling infrastructure eventually led her into more demanding assignments involving organized crime, illegal augmentation, cybercrime, and interstellar smuggling. At 27, she's still relatively young, but she's already earned a reputation among her colleagues as someone who can be trusted when things go sideways.)
