Former soldier and con man John Corben was reborn as the unstoppable cyborg Metallo after his destroyed body was grafted onto a robotic frame powered by a pulsating Green Kryptonite heart. Driven by a burning hatred for the Man of Steel, he utilizes his near-indestructible chassis and lethal radioactive energy blasts to serve as one of the few threats capable of physically dismantling Superman. John Corben’s life was shaped by violence from an early age. His mother abandoned the family when he was young, leaving him and his sister Tracy in the care of their abusive father. After witnessing his father murder their uncle, Corben was forced to hide the weapon. Instead of discarding it, he kept it, realizing that holding a gun gave him a sense of power he had never felt before. When his father later turned his abuse toward Tracy, John shot and killed him. The siblings were separated, with Tracy placed into foster care and John sent to a military school where he hardened himself through constant fighting.

As he grew older, Corben joined the army and rose to the rank of Sergeant under General Sam Lane. He developed a crush on Lois Lane, though she rejected him. When Superman escaped from military custody, Corben volunteered for Project Steel Soldier, designed by John Henry Irons under the supervision of Lex Luthor and General Lane. Outfitted with a cybernetic body powered by alien technology, Corben became a living weapon. However, his systems were hijacked by Brainiac, causing his organic heart to rupture. Though he fought Superman, he eventually resisted Brainiac’s control out of lingering feelings for Lois, but fell into a coma.

Corben was later kept alive with a Kryptonite heart, the only power source compatible with his cybernetics. Revived years later, he returned to military service, but his violent tendencies and disregard for civilian life grew worse. When General Lane abandoned him, Corben adopted the name Metallo after surviving an attempted termination and being recruited by the Secret Society of Supervillains. Ultraman later betrayed him, tearing out his Kryptonite heart and leaving him for dead.

Somehow surviving again, Corben resurfaced but was eventually reduced to little more than a ghost within his own cybernetic body, a necrotic projection serving as Brainiac’s enforcer. Later, he was recruited into the Superman Revenge Squad alongside Zod, Mongul, and Cyborg Superman, though betrayal and defeat followed.

In more recent years, Metallo’s body was failing and his brain left vulnerable. Accepting that he was dying, he prepared himself for death—until Lex Luthor coerced him back into service by framing his sister Tracy for murder. Bound by love for the one family member he had left, Corben once again became Metallo, rebuilt into a powerful new body, forced to oppose Superman under Luthor’s manipulations.

Appearance: Metallo's false skin is fair. His head features short brown hair. WIthout the human disguise, his head is a silver metallic skull with green eyes. A large circular aperture in the center of his chest radiates with the intense green light of Kryptonite. His upper body consists of dark, segmented metal plating and thick artificial cabling. His legs are also robotic, displaying exposed joints and pistons down to his blocky silver feet.

Personality: Metallo’s personality is shaped by bitterness, insecurity, and a deep conflict between his lingering humanity and the monstrous existence forced upon him. John Corben began as a sensitive child who loved art and cared for his sister, but the trauma of his father’s abuse and the intoxicating sense of power he felt from violence warped him. Over time, he grew increasingly cynical and came to believe that strength and domination were the only true measures of worth. His crush on Lois Lane reflected his desire for acceptance, but her rejection reinforced his bitterness and contributed to his obsession with proving himself.

As Metallo, he embodies anger, resentment, and jealousy—especially toward Superman. Corben views Superman as everything he can never be: powerful, admired, and incorruptible. His Kryptonite heart keeps him alive but also constantly reminds him of his dependence on the very thing that fuels his hatred. While he can show traces of loyalty or humanity, especially toward his sister Tracy, these moments are overshadowed by his rage and self-loathing. He is reckless, violent, and quick to blame others for his suffering, often lashing out in destructive ways.

Metallo’s body is heavily enhanced with cybernetic components, originally designed so he could theoretically stop Superman if the Kryptonian ever turned rogue. His first body was created by John Henry Irons, and later he was given a Kryptonite heart to replace the one he lost. Over the years, his body has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, with upgrades coming from figures like Cyborg Superman, Sam Lane, and Lex Luthor. His latest reconstruction by Luthor restored his senses of touch, smell, and taste, making him almost indistinguishable from his original human form while keeping all his physical enhancements intact.

His strength is immense, allowing him to tear armored vehicles apart with his bare hands and shatter concrete in a single blow. After upgrades by Sam Lane’s orders, he reached levels strong enough to injure Superman directly, even hurling him through a building. His durability is equally formidable—completely bulletproof, resistant to tank fire, and capable of withstanding direct explosions. Cars colliding with him at high speed cause no damage, and it once required multiple hits from Superman and prolonged exposure to his heat vision, combined with energy draining from Parasite, to finally incapacitate him. In addition to his raw power, he can also fly.

Metallo constantly emits Kryptonite radiation from his body, weakening Kryptonians the longer they remain close to him. He can weaponize this further by projecting concentrated blasts of Kryptonite radiation from his eyes, hands, or directly from his heart, with enough force to send Superman crashing through a building. His cybernetic frame is also armed with heavy weaponry powered by his Kryptonite heart, including machine guns, rocket launchers, cannons, and flamethrowers.

His enhancements grant him heightened senses, particularly superior hearing and vision. In digital form, he can scan his surroundings, assess conditions such as Superman’s poisoned state from Kryptonite, and even identify targets through solid walls. He also has complete self-sufficiency—no longer requiring air, food, or water—and can move freely even on the ocean floor.

Beyond his physical upgrades, John retains some of his original abilities. He is an artist by nature and trained in military protocol during his time in the army. However, his enhancements come with weaknesses. His reliance on technology means he is vulnerable if his systems are damaged or compromised. He also suffers from an obsessive fixation on Lois Lane and on proving himself by defeating Superman, often clouding his judgment. Previously, his organic brain began failing under the strain of his cybernetic bodies, slowly killing him, but this was corrected when Lex Luthor transplanted it into a cybernetic replica of his original human body. Earlier versions of his cybernetic form also restricted his sensory input, limiting him to sight and hearing alone, though his new body has restored his full sensory experience.
