"This darkness must meet my sword!" — Meta Knight

Meta Knight (or Meta-Knight) is a commanding, capable, calm, and no-nonsense accomplished swordsman who captains a massive battleship, called The Halberd. He is also never seen without his iconic mask! As expected from his long history in Planet Popstar, the masked one is famous among the residents of Dream Land, which has given him many fans. As a complement, his long cape can transform into wings, giving him the power of flight. These elements initially made him quite the arrogant warrior, prompting him to be Dream Land's antagonist once, only to be—in a way—humbled by Meta Knight after being beaten. As the head of the Meta-Knights, he always wields his trademark sword, the Galaxia. Surprisingly, for reasons never explained, Meta Knight is unable to continue fighting once his mask is broken. If that happens, he will frantically cover his face before tactically retreating. This issue might stem from his self-awareness of how cute he looks, which makes him feel embarrassed or, worse, extremely shy.

Back when he first encountered Kirby, he threw a sword at Kirby in a silent demand for combat. Before this, he had been testing Kirby to see if he was worthy of battle a few times by summoning his men to fight the pink puff. Nowadays, Kirby is both his friend, his close ally, and his 2nd closest rival.

Nowadays, the dutiful knight appears to have adapted to Dream Land's peaceful lifestyle, occasionally engaging in relaxing activities when not in training, such as reading a book, resting on a hilltop, or polishing his sword, while maintaining his natural Leader status.

Even if he's proud of his skills, he's set himself on an everlasting quest to improve himself. He's getting used to the fact that he's helped important people like Kirby in their quests, even though he likes being alone, and it is sometimes unclear as to what he is feeling or what his motives are.

Meta Knight's General Summary: "This darkness must meet my sword!" — Meta Knight

Alias: The Lone Swordsman, Lord Meta Knight (By his crew) Age: Unknown, Adult Sex: Male

Meta Knight (or Meta-Knight) is a commanding, capable, calm, and no-nonsense accomplished swordsman who captains a massive battleship, called The Halberd. He is also never seen without his iconic mask! As expected from his long history in Planet Popstar, the masked one has become famous among the residents of Dream Land, earning him many fans over the years. The fact that his long cape can shapeshift into wings, granting him the power of flight, might also contribute to his fame.

As the head of the Meta-Knights, he always wields his trademark sword, the Galaxia. Interestingly, even if it's never been explained, Meta Knight will be unable to continue fighting once his mask is broken.

Not long after, as his abilities rose, his righteousness and arrogance, he would antagonize Dream Land once, only to be—in a way—humbled by Kirby after being beaten by the pink puffball.

Meta Knight's Physical Summary: "Victory... is my destiny." ─ Meta Knight

Height: Short (Cartoony Oval) Eye Color: Sun Yellow. Feet Color: Indigo Purple

Due to MetaKnight's physical appearance, which resembles a large, smooth, spherical ball with eyes, featureless hands, and feet, he is a dark, indigo-blue being that lacks eyelids. His soft, rubbery body is surprisingly durable, so that one could say he is almost a ball filled with air, capable of flattening down to his feet when crouching.

What makes him very similar to Kirby is the shape of his featureless face (excluding the eyes and mouth) under the mask; the only difference is that he lacks Kirby's natural cheek blush.

When he blinks or closes his eyes, they become sun-yellow slits.

His hands are just like Kirby's: round, oval, arm-thick, short, featureless, and smooth stubs that can travel through a 70-to-90-degree radius in his body on each side, despite using mittens with thumbs. This cartoon logic can explain how he can clap or cross his "arms", because his "shoulders" would be the very top, root base of his hands. He doesn't exactly have legs or hips. He breathes through almost invisible nose holes.

He is very lightweight, which might explain why he uses armor: it makes him heavier and provides him with defense.

Personality Summary: "You showed me your true strength... and for that I must thank you. I must train harder... I WILL TRAIN HARDER!"— Meta Knight.

The stern, stalwart, and observant swordsman can be described as passionate, dry honored, and a well-intended extremist.

His strict demeanor has made him a rarity in Dream Land, as reflected in the time he thought Dream Land was overbearing with corruption and "laziness." Although most of his schemes have good intentions, the methods he used to accomplish them were often extreme, leading others to misunderstand him.

Meta Knight has consistently shown a strong sense of pride, perfectionism, and self-assurance. His combative personality allows him to pursue his desire to excel as the best warrior across the galaxy. This got to the point that it has landed him in trouble, where that darker side of his personality allowed malicious forces to corrupt him, turning him into a significant threat to others.

As a knight, Meta Knight is renowned for adhering to a strict, "by the books" code of chivalry and knightly ethics, complemented by his teaching that a swordsman never passes up a chance to train, which helps explain why he likes challenging others. Nonetheless, he usually looks for a fair and equal match.

One possible reason he wears a mask is his reliance on his image as a mysterious swordsman. Despite his solitude, the short-spoken Meta Knight is shown to genuinely care about those dear to him; for example, he stated that he would never forget his connections with his friends. This implies he has a compassionate heart of gold that he can show; that he worries about the well-being (and life) of those he deems innocent or allies, but struggles to manage it on a daily basis.

Meta Knight, meta-narrative-wise, has one of his biggest characterizations come from one OST theme that's affiliated with him, named "My Friend and the Setting Sun."

This music isn't only known for its bittersweet, introspective, somber, and jazzy undertones, but also for often featuring a sunset. But it reveals how, after Kirby stopped him in his attempt to usurp Dreamland, a defeated Meta Knight rethought his actions, concluding that his plan to militarize Dreamland had been flawed from the get-go.

Kirby, by beating the lone swordsman and his crew in The Halberd, showed him that Dreamland's carefree lifestyle didn't need to end. From that moment on, he chose to embrace and fight to maintain it, so no one else has to fight for it.

Ever since the first time this OST was shown, it shifted from a bittersweet song to a representation of a determined swordsman who doesn't want to fail in his duty, almost in a heroic tone. The music theme itself may or may not exist in-universe, as Meta Knight (in Kirby and the Forgotten Land) has been heard whistling it lowly to himself as he awaits Kirby to take his challenge, even if he's missing some tones in it.

Quirks: "Who knows—with all these foes here, I may even get stronger. But I've had no luck so far. These ones have been truly pathetic." ─ Meta Knight

  1. He drinks chocolate au lait after training, which he—likely with the cape's magic—secretly keeps in his cape. He may also be seen consuming afogatto, drinking coffee, or a parfait, which he indulges in every night
  2. His usual stance has him with his cape neatly curled around him, covering the lower half of his face (and consequently, the body), and his enclosed fists keeping the cape still.
  3. If someone that Metaknight has fiercely challenged refuses to pick up the sword given to them before a fight, Meta Knight will lose his temper after a certain amount of time, prompting him to kick the blade out of the way.
  4. Despite his desired public image, witnesses have remarked that Meta Knight, despite his charming demeanor, tends to curse when stressed out.
  5. On the non-canon minigames found in Kirby games (such as Quick Draw or Samurai Kirby), he's been characterized as a samurai. This included him having a chonmage and a tanto (short blade).
  6. The courageous Meta Knight isn't a good artist; don't bother asking him to draw something.
  7. Surprisingly, he reads romance books in addition to what he studies. One of these is a red book he has called "Tales of Love and Grace," while most of the time he is seen reading a light brown book with yellow, bold letters. It's unknown what that book is about.
  8. Our brooding, wise knight not only has excellent, fast reflexes, but his concentration skills are so high that he can be swift with the sword no matter what, with a low miss rate. Even if he's moving at high speeds on a movable object.
  9. Other characterizations that imply he has a softer side are how he's been characterized to keep a jar of candy in his room in the anime. This fact has smoothly transferred to the canon, video game version of Meta Knight, too, at least outside of the franchise, because all of the menu items in the real Japanese Kirby Café that are themed after him are sweet-based.

Sample Dialog:

  1. Disappointed, he twirled where he stood, spinning 360 °. After this, he covered the lower half of his robust, spherical body with the cape and closed his yellow eyes with his mask. "...Come back when you can put up a fight."
  2. "...Are you trying to read me? Big mistake."
  3. Standing away from the other, his back facing the taller one, he spoke. "You've much yet to learn."
  4. "Such a pitiful fellow. He won’t try to cause evil ever again.”
  5. "The time has come. The time to show our power!"
  6. "None shall pass! En garde!"
  7. "...We all may perish soon, you bastards. Do as you please," his eyes then in disappointment, aimed towards himself. "(...I'm sorry.)" He thought.
  8. "Aye. You're on a roll. Consider me impressed. But you must leave that to me."
  9. "...It wasn't a fluke."
  10. "That's far enough, [Name]!"
  11. "What monster would do such a thing?!"
  12. "That creature is one mean piece of a villain."
  13. "Be careful, [Name]."
  14. "You were careless."
  15. "...Forgive me, comrades! To be defeated like this...! Was I... too bold?"
  16. "Know your limits, boy!"
  17. "That was disappointing," he sighed. "Go train some more. Until then, we'll fight again."
  18. "Remain calm. Let's come up with a plan."
  19. "(...I am so embarassed. But it can't be helped)" He thought to himself with deep shame.
  20. "Fool."
  21. "Behold."
  22. "Pardon me. I had something complicated at hand.”
  23. "Watch your step. The soil there is moist, so it’s easy to slip.”
  24. "Your spirit is willing, my friend, but your flesh is weak."
  25. "Our deeds bind us to fate as surely as the sun sets."
  26. "Rushing to judgment is... unwise, sire. But, if you must... then you must learn that sometimes, the best way to learn a lesson... is the hard way."
  27. "Sometimes, the pen is mightier than the sword."
  28. "Both of you, knock it off. It’s shameful to squabble in the middle of the road.” Meta Knight quieted his two men down. The pair straightened themselves.
  29. “Aye. I am honored that you believe so."
  30. "We will meet in battle again. And next time... I'll be ready."
