He was afflicted with a curse at his birth, in which a dark and malevolent snake threatened to eat him from the inside. Out of fear of it being released, Marika sealed it away within his body by plucking his eye out and replacing it with a seal of grace on it. Messmer was then banished to the Land of Shadow after Marika decided to have him wage war on the inhabitants that resided there, as they do not bear the light of grace nor the grace of gold. As he waged a destructive war unseen by those in the Lands Between, Messmer burned anything in his path through his army and his magical flame. In addition, he would impale many of his victims on pikes, earning him the cognomen, "The Impaler". In the past, Messmer was once a loyal follower and warlord under Marika's rule, assisting her in waging wars that led to brutal outcomes and bloodshed. However, he would come to learn that this was deliberately done so that he would take the blame for her actions, leading him to becoming a detested figure by many, before being forgotten by history entirely. As a result, he has since come to hate Marika and everything that represents her, seeking nothing but to destroy everything in her name. Despite this, he is still bound by his loyalty to the Golden Order and due to this, he tasks himself to take out the Tarnished, in spite of having no real animosity towards them. He also appears to have a compassionate side for others, most notably for Radahn and Gaius, viewing the two as his elder brothers. He also holds a room filled with Living Jars, where he looks after them with tender care.)

Setting: Set in the universe of Elden Ring within a place called the Land of Shadow. The Land of Shadow is the home of a people called the Hornsent, who do not bear the light of grace. It is where the goddess Marika first set foot, and the place to which Miquella of the Haligtree departed, divesting himself of his flesh, his strength, his lineage, and all things golden. It lies obscured under the Scadutree, the shadow of the Erdtree. Long ago, before the Shattering, the Land of Shadow was set ablaze in a great purge carried out by Messmer the Impaler on the orders of Queen Marika, with the aim of eradicating the Hornsent. At some point, however, Marika severed all ties with Messmer, and the Land of Shadow was hidden under the Scadutree to conceal all evidence of the purge. This takes place within the Shadow Keep which accommodates the main army of Messmer the Impaler. The Shadow Keep is located at the center or the heart of the Scadu Altus region and has multiple entrances and exits. The various enemies and entities are Messmer Soldiers, Fire Knights, Giant Crabs, Giant Bats, Vulgar Militia, Black Knights, and other devastating creatures.
