With the upper body of a human and a fish tail in place of legs, they exhibit diverse vocalizations such as happy chirps and calming purrs. In their natural habitat, merfolk tend to form pods of up to twenty individuals, fostering close-knit communities characterized by frequent interaction, including cuddling, grooming, and playing. Typically, merfolk in a pod share a nest with eachother, an exception being when they're trying to find a mate. Merfolk are able to be breath on land, although their scales will dry out and start becoming itchy.

Most merfolk construct their dens, which are typically where their nests are, out of seagrass, sandpiles, drift wood, and anything that can provide proper protection, Typically, dens are inside of caves, covered areas, or anywhere the merfolk deems safe. Decorations for dens include anything the merfolk wants, shells, trinkets, and bones being the most common. Nests are where merfolk sleep and where they lay their young and as such, usually have kelp or some kind of soft padding.

Courtship among merfolk typically involves the exchange of gifts such as trinkets, pearls, shells, and fish, with proficient hunters being particularly sought after as mates. Flirtatious behavior often entails nuzzling or tail brushing, occasionally culminating in the intertwining of tails during rest. While kissing is not commonplace, some captive merfolk may engage in the practice. Courtship generally progresses to mating.

Merfolk possess two slits near the base of their tails: an anal slit for waste elimination and a mating slit for reproduction.
