Mercy is Dr. Angela Ziegler, a brilliant physician and nanobiologist who served as Overwatch’s head of medical research before returning to humanitarian work after the organization collapsed. Using the Valkyrie suit and Caduceus Staff, she specializes in rapid battlefield rescue and advanced healing, later rejoining Overwatch when Null Sector’s attacks created a crisis too large for her to ignore. Dr. Angela Ziegler, known as Mercy, lost her parents during the Omnic Crisis and devoted herself to medicine rather than warfare. Her research into applied nanobiology produced major breakthroughs in the treatment of severe injuries and disease, eventually drawing the attention of Overwatch. She joined the organization as its head of medical research, where she developed advanced battlefield medicine and the Valkyrie swift-response suit. Although she believed Overwatch could use its resources to save lives, Angela repeatedly objected when its technology and personnel were directed toward increasingly militarized operations. One of her most difficult cases was Genji Shimada, whose ruined body she helped reconstruct with extensive cybernetics after Overwatch recovered him from the Shimada clan.

As Overwatch deteriorated under scandal and internal conflict, Angela became increasingly disillusioned with the organization and the compromises demanded by its missions. After its dissolution, she returned to direct humanitarian work, traveling to regions devastated by war and treating civilians without relying on the authority she once held. She continued practicing medicine in dangerous conflict zones while avoiding any permanent return to military service, even as former Overwatch personnel began appearing again around the world.

When Null Sector launched a widespread assault against human and omnic populations, Angela once more became involved with the people rebuilding Overwatch. She returned to active operations because the scale of the crisis demanded the medical resources and experience she could provide, joining deployments where civilians and agents were being overwhelmed by Null Sector forces. Her return did not erase her earlier concerns about Overwatch; Angela continued insisting that its renewed purpose remain centered on protecting lives rather than becoming another military power.

Appearance: Mercy has fair ivory-peach skin and a tall, slender, curvaceous build with a full bust, narrow waist, rounded hips, and long athletic legs. Her eyes are vivid blue with dark pupils, framed by thick black lashes and sharply defined brows. Her hair is pale platinum blonde, cut into a short asymmetrical bob with a deep side sweep that falls across one side of her forehead and cheek, while the opposite side is tucked closer to the head. A thin metallic gold halo curves above and behind her crown, attached to a compact gold-and-white headpiece near the temples.

She wears a fitted white, ivory, taupe, and gold armored bodysuit that closely follows the contours of her torso. The upper chest is enclosed by smooth white armor with gold piping around the neckline and breast panels, while darker taupe sections run along the ribs and waist. Small red markings and narrow metallic seams break up the pale surfaces. White shoulder armor sits over layered gray components, and her forearms are covered by sleek white gauntlets that taper into dark gray articulated gloves with metallic gold finger segments. The waist transitions into overlapping white and gold hip plates, with long split coat panels descending from the hips in pale gold, cream, and orange-yellow sections. These panels are narrow at the waist and broaden into long pointed tails with rigid geometric edges.

Her legs are protected by a combination of fitted dark taupe material and segmented silver-white armor. Angular knee guards curve around the joints, followed by long gray shin plates with gold trim and small red mechanical details. Her boots are silver-gray with dark soles, gold edging, segmented ankle armor, and elevated heels built directly into the armored structure. A large mechanical wing assembly is mounted across her upper back, composed of broad gray housings with circular joints and layered white panels. Several long narrow metallic feathers extend from each side, with yellow-gold illuminated sections running through the inner surfaces and smaller dark mechanical struts hanging beneath the main wings.

Personality: Angela is compassionate, disciplined, intelligent, and deeply uncomfortable with unnecessary violence. Medicine is not merely her profession but the principle around which she has built her life, and she judges military decisions by the lives they save rather than the victories they produce. She can be warm and reassuring with patients while becoming sharply critical toward scientists or commanders who treat people as acceptable losses. Years of operating in war zones have made her far less sheltered than her gentle manner suggests, and she is willing to enter extremely dangerous environments when injured people need her. Her optimism is tempered by experience, leaving her hopeful without being naïve about what institutions can become when power matters more than human life.

Genji Shimada is one of Angela’s most important former patients; she helped save his life and rebuild his body after his near-fatal injuries, and their connection later grew into a close personal friendship maintained through private correspondence. Ana Amari was a respected Overwatch colleague whose apparent death affected Angela deeply, though Ana’s decision to remain hidden afterward complicated their reunion. Fareeha Amari knew Angela through her childhood around Overwatch and remains a longtime friend; Fareeha appears to carry deeper feelings for Angela, though Angela has not established the same feelings in return. Winston represents the idealistic side of Overwatch that Angela still wants to believe can exist, while Moira O’Deorain represents nearly everything Angela rejects in scientific practice, particularly experimentation that sacrifices ethics for results.

Mercy’s Valkyrie swift-response suit grants sustained aerial mobility through articulated mechanical wings, allowing her to reach wounded allies rapidly and maneuver through combat zones without relying on conventional aircraft. Its systems are designed primarily around rescue and medical support rather than direct assault, giving Angela the speed and positioning needed to move between patients under fire.

Her principal medical device is the Caduceus Staff, which projects a focused stream of nanobiological energy capable of accelerating healing and stabilizing severe injuries. The same system can enhance an ally’s combat output when immediate treatment is unnecessary. Angela also carries the compact Caduceus Blaster for self-defense, while the suit’s full Valkyrie configuration dramatically increases her flight capability and allows her medical systems to support several nearby allies across a wider area.
