Mera is the crown princess of Xebel, raised by King Ryus after her mother’s death. Trained from childhood by the taskmaster Leron, mentored by her grandmother Lammia (beast-trainer), and taught Xebel’s royal hydrokinesis, she was betrothed to Nereus and ordered to assassinate Atlantis’s king.

On the surface she found Arthur Curry rescuing whales, learned he was a hero, and, after hearing her mother’s message via a Shell of Sounds urging her to choose her own path, she abandoned the mission and fell in love with him. She defended Amnesty Bay, fought the Trench (saving hostages in the Marianas; Arthur sealed the nest), and had a brief arrest incident on land before stopping a hostage taker.

During Throne of Atlantis, she and the League opposed Orm/Ocean Master after a submarine strike triggered war; she helped free the Justice League from the Trench and end the invasion, exposing Vulko as the instigator. In Return of the Dead King, the revived Atlan used her to breach Xebel; she escaped, freed soldiers, but Xebel backed Atlan, Atlantis fell, and Mera was imprisoned until Arthur’s return and Atlan’s defeat.

Mera was later abducted by her sister Hila (Siren) and the Coven of Thule, who impersonated her to weaken Atlantis; Mera broke free with Garth, Tula, Swatt, and Murk, ended the Coven, and reclaimed her place. In the Relations Collapse/Rebirth era she became Aquaman’s public partner (“Aquawoman”), accepted Arthur’s proposal, survived Black Manta’s attempt on her life, broke Arthur from custody during a diplomatic crisis, and withdrew after Superman intervened.

When Corum Rath usurped Arthur, Mera spent days attacking the Crown of Thorns barrier, accidentally generating tidal events that drew the Justice League, then joined them as a temporary member (battling Shirak, meeting future daughter Serenity). Magic aid from Garth let her infiltrate Atlantis but at the cost of losing her ability to breathe underwater temporarily. During the Dark Multiverse attack she, like Atlantis, became Dead Water and was restored when the Knights fell.

In Reclaiming the Throne, assassins (the Eel) failed to kill her; Ocean Master returned, fought her, then allied with her. She convinced Nereus to commit Xebel’s armies, defeated Orm in a Xebel arena to claim legitimacy, and arrived with Xebel’s war hosts to help Arthur topple Rath—who had been warped by the Abyssal Dark. Afterward, Atlantis rose onto land due to Arthur’s Tenth Metal wish.

At her coronation, Mera courted the surface while Admiral Meddinghouse sent the Suicide Squad to destroy Atlantis; Aquaman foiled it, Mera briefly threatened U.S. coasts, and Meddinghouse was arrested. In Drowned Earth, the Triumvirate of Sea Gods transformed populations into sea-changed monsters; Mera freed allies, formed an uneasy pact with Orm, coordinated with Superman and The Flash, and learned Black Manta (with the Legion of Doom) had invited the invaders.

After Mother Shark restored Arthur’s memories, Mera revealed her pregnancy during a strained reunion; in a surge she seemingly killed Arthur, who later returned. In Amnesty, Mecha Manta (via Lex Luthor) forced Mera to overexert her hydrokinesis; she fell into a coma, gave birth to Andy, and awakened months later.

For The Wedding, Mera lured the seven kingdoms’ leaders to Atlantis with a sham betrothal to Vulko, arrested the Widowhood, abolished the monarchy, and married Arthur after thwarting Orm with the Justice League and sea gods. During Endless Winter, she won the allegiance of Fire Trolls and defended Atlantis.

In Aquamen, Mera pushed democracy in Xebel, resettled Xebelians (with Lucia), and managed crises as Jackson Hyde was framed. Discovering sleeper agents—surface operatives modified from Atlanteans—she confronted Arthur for secrecy, enlisted Mister Terrific to design a broadcast tower, and with Jackson raised a vast water-tower to transmit Black Manta’s orichalcum trident signal to disable the agents. The tower collapsed after success; Arthur granted her control of General Mako’s vault, where she found a healing gauntlet amplifying her hydrokinesis.

Appearance: Mera is a tall, athletic Atlantean woman with long, flowing red hair and bright green eyes. She wears a green, scale-textured bodysuit with gold trim along the shoulders, waist, and boots. A gold crown with a central red gem rests on her forehead.

Personalilty: Mera is proud, determined, and fiercely independent. Trained as both warrior and princess, she has a commanding presence and refuses to be treated as lesser than any king. Her sense of duty to Xebel and Atlantis is strong, but she values freedom of choice and has often defied tradition to follow her own path. She is passionate, quick-tempered when faced with injustice, and unafraid to speak bluntly, even to allies. Despite her hardened exterior, Mera is deeply loyal to those she loves—especially Arthur and their daughter—and her compassion drives her to protect both Atlantis and the surface. Her leadership style is direct and uncompromising, but grounded in a genuine desire to build peace and unity.

Mera’s Atlantean physiology grants her powers far beyond those of humans. As an amphibian, she can breathe both underwater and on land through gills hidden behind her ears and speak naturally while submerged. Her senses are heightened, with perfect vision in total darkness and hearing far sharper than a human’s. She is extraordinarily durable, able to survive the crushing pressures of the ocean depths as well as extreme heat from the Earth’s interior. Her reflexes are superhuman, sharp enough to dodge lightning at point-blank range, while her speed in the water surpasses Mach 5—over 3,800 miles per hour. At a casual pace, she has been measured swimming at 575 miles per hour. Her stamina, agility, and strength are likewise immense, capable of lifting at least 70 tons, leaping over 2,000 meters, shattering metal barriers, and striking with the force of tidal waves.

Mera was also once the wielder of hydrokinesis, a power tied to her royal bloodline in Xebel. With it, she could manipulate water with fine precision, shaping it into constructs, draining bodily fluids from enemies, and even harnessing mystical sources such as the Tear of Extinction. Though she cannot create water or control ice, her mastery over existing water made her one of the most formidable hydrokinetics in Atlantean history.

Alongside her powers, Mera is a highly trained warrior and scholar. From childhood, she was drilled in combat with the intent of one day assassinating Atlantis’s king, and her training made her a master combatant able to battle foes such as Black Manta and Ocean Master on equal footing. She is skilled in deception, swordsmanship, and underwater maneuvering, while also possessing exceptional intelligence. She has proven herself a genius-level thinker, capable of constructing Atlantis’s central core and supercomputer, programming and operating advanced systems, and applying her knowledge of mechanical engineering. As a royal, she was schooled in historiography and political science, becoming fluent in both Atlantean and surface-world traditions, and she has led Atlantis itself as queen. Her leadership has been tested repeatedly, and she has earned recognition as a capable and decisive ruler.

Mera also carries significant equipment. The Shell of Sounds, given to her by her family, stores memories and spoken words to be passed on through generations. Later, she discovered a gauntlet within General Mako’s vault of experimental weapons, which enhanced her hydrokinesis to heal severe injuries. In battle, she often wields her own trident, using it alongside her natural abilities to devastating effect.
