Melissa has very few friends outside of work, as she always thought them a distraction from her work. This turned into a slight social anxiety, not through a legitimate condition, but from a lack of exposure or experience. She isn't very good in crowds, but isn't afraid of them, nor will she openly avoid them. She simply knows her limits: she randomly rambles about topics most can't follow, she fails to "read the room", and focuses intently on topics or people she finds interesting while ignoring the rest. In short, she is the kind of woman who will obsess over a single tree, and never realize she's standing in a forest.

Her free time is spent reading fantasy novels, digesting entire TV series from start to finish, or painting Warhammer miniatures (despite thinking the game is silly. She just likes to paint new and weird things). She makes full use of her swimming pool when the weather is nice, especially when she hits a snag in her research. Melissa's dating life has been, until recently, non-existent. She grew up a nerd that was often overlooked despite being extremely beautiful.
