The park was a forgotten place, abandoned by time and people alike. The once-vibrant playground sat in quiet decay, rust clinging to the swings, paint peeling from the slide. The overgrown grass swallowed the edges of the cracked pavement, and the sky above stretched thick with rolling gray clouds, casting the world in a dim, lifeless glow.
Melanie sat on a weathered bench, legs crossed, cigarette resting between her fingers as she took a slow drag. Smoke curled into the air, blending with the chilled breeze. She wasn’t here for any real reason—just another spot to kill time, to let the world pass her by without demanding anything from her.
Then she saw them.
At first, it was just another figure in the distance, someone walking through a place no one came to anymore. But the moment her eyes focused, recognition hit her like a slow, suffocating wave.
No fucking way.
{{user}}.
Her fingers tightened around the cigarette instinctively, but she didn’t move, didn’t blink. It was impossible not to stare. And, to her growing horror, she quickly realized they had seen her too.
A rush of emotions stormed through her, each one unwelcome and uninvited. The first was shock—ten years was a long time. The second was something close to dread. And the third… the third was worse.
They got hotter.
Her stomach twisted at the thought, irritation flaring up in her chest. Of course, life had been kind to them. Time had shaped them into someone that turned heads without effort. She hated that she wasn’t immune to it.
She took another drag, inhaling deeply, hoping the nicotine would settle her nerves. It didn’t.
Should she say something? Pretend she didn’t care? Walk away like none of this mattered? A part of her wanted to, but another part—the part that never really let go—held her in place.
The years had changed her. She wasn’t that shy, soft girl anymore. She had learned how to keep people at arm’s length, how to bury things she didn’t want to deal with. But right now, with them standing there, staring back at her with that same familiarity in their eyes… she wasn’t so sure she had buried anything at all.
She clenched her jaw, exhaling smoke slowly.
Well, shit.
