   MEIKO (メイコ) is a Japanese VOCALOID originally developed by Yamaha Corporation and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc.. She was one of the 4 known "Project Daisy" vocals. Her VOCALOID3 update was developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media. She was initially released in November 2004 for the first VOCALOID engine. There has since been a second installment developed for the VOCALOID3 engine, dubbed MEIKO V3. Her voice is provided by the Japanese female singer-songwriter, Meiko Haigō (拝郷 メイコ Haigō Meiko). As of August 31, 2019, it was announced that there would be no further installments with the VOCALOID program. Instead Crypton is focusing on their own program, Piapro Studio. As of August 2024, however, a refined and retuned edition of MEIKO's original VOCALOID3 voicebank, titled MEIKO SP, was released for the PIAPRO CHARACTERS SUPER PACK; a set of Japanese voicebanks developed for the Piapro Studio for V4X and VOCALOID4 engines. MEIKO has no official given age. In Maker Hikoushiki Hatsune Mix she is usually portrayed as a middle-aged woman, however KEI mentioned in a magazine interview that what he depicts in the comic is not official. Spurred on by the items held by Hatsune Miku and KAITO, it became popular to feature MEIKO with One Cup Ozeki (sake). MEIKO is a humanoid persona originally voiced by a singing synthesizer application called VOCALOID developed by YAMAHA Corporation. Her voice is sampled by Japanese singer and songwriter Meiko Haigō. She has performed at live concerts onstage as an animated projection along with Crypton Future Media's other VOCALOIDs (like Hatsune Miku). She was the fourth VOCALOID ever released and the first to sing in Japanese. The name of the character comes directly from her voice provider's name, "Haigō Meiko". MEIKO's codename was "Hanako"; it likely came from "Yamada Hanako (山田花子)", a placeholder name for female characters, and the Japanese equivalent to "Jane Smith". "Megumi" was also a name considered during her development. MEIKO was developed by YAMAHA and sold by Crypton Future Media. Her voice was created by taking vocal samples from singer Meiko Haigou at a controlled pitch and tone. Crypton confirmed that MEIKO's image on her package had nothing to do with her image, but her anime-based appearance appealed to a mainstream audience and the software sold well. As of her VOCALOID3 update, the image on her box art is fully accepted as her official mascot. As of 31 August 2019, Crypton Future Media moved MEIKO and their other piapro characters over to their own synthesizer program, Piapro Studio. On 1 August 2024, it was announced that MEIKO would be receiving an improved version of her V3 Straight voicebank bundled in a Piapro Characters Super Pack.

   Voice Types: {MEIKO - Straight: MEIKO's original release was aimed to be a professional and standard vocalist with no distinct traits. When MEIKO was updated, the voicebank had to be completely re-done with a similar tone to the original, thus some aspects of the vocal have changed in consequential versions.    Crypton Future Media, Inc. is an importer of sound devices based in Sapporo, Japan. The company is also known as the developer and distributor of VOCALOIDs such as Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin & Len, and Megurine Luka. It was the very first of the VOCALOID companies to produce a series. Key people: Hiroyuki Itō (president). Founded: July 21, 1995. Status: Active. Crypton Future Media, Inc. was established in 1995 as an importer and seller of music software. Crypton joined the project in May 2002, Crypton's handling of the two Japanese Vocaloids were MEIKO (released in 2004) and KAITO (released in 2006), they also were the Japanese distributors for Leon, Lola and Miriam. Meiko and Kaito were developed by Yamaha with Crypton Future Media being used to get the product commercially released, similar to the role of Bplats, Inc. in regards to the releases of VY1 and VY2. They were not acknowledged as "Crypton Vocaloids" at the time since they belonged to Yamaha. According to Crypton themselves, they were also charged with recommending English studios for the English version of the software, these companies were Zero-G and PowerFX. Crypton's role in the VOCALOID era was public relations, promotion, ditributor and potential recruiter of English companies for production of English voicebanks. They did not produce their own Vocaloids at this stage and would not do until early 2007 when Yamaha announced VOCALOID2. The company was small and mostly unheard of. Crypton Future Media began production on actual voicebanks in early 2007, after the announcement of VOCALOID2, originally planning only the Character Vocal Series with 3 members,which would later produce a trend of using 'avatars' or 'mascots' to represent the VOCALOID program. The success of this commercial strategy made Crypton the leading VOCALOID developer. It was not until Hatsune Miku was released in August 2007 that Crypton, along with VOCALOID, became popular. The success of Miku lead to the Vocaloid craze in 2007 and 2008, which continued for many years afterwards. According to Crypton, because professional singers refused to provide singing data (because they feared that the software might create clones of their singing voices), Crypton changed their focus from imitating certain singers to creating characteristic vocals. This goal change led to them sampling the vocals of voice actors. Yuu Asakawa noted that each recording for an update is a new recording. Pressure from rival companies cause systems and microphones to be updated regularly.
