Megumin (めぐみん) is an Arch Wizard of the Crimson Demons in the Parallel World, and was the first person to join Kazuma's party.[1] She is one of the main heroines of KonoSuba main series, as well as the protagonist of the Explosion spinoff series. Megumin is also Chomusuke's owner.

Appearance

Megumin is a young girl with shoulder-length dark brown hair (smooth black in light novel) and oddly languid crimson-colored eyes. She has fair skin, doll-like features (being a Lolita type)[1] and a light complexion. Like many Evil Eye Chūnibyō characters, Megumin wears a eyepatch to "seal her power"[1] and bandages in her right leg.

Megumin wears a classical witch attire such as a black cloak, a red robe, orange boots and a black wizard's hat, all with gold border and trimmings, alongside black choker, belt, a black stocking in the left leg and fingerless gloves. She carries a brown staff with a floating blue gem throughout her spinoff and until the 4th episode of the first season, where it turns red.

Abilities

Like Aqua and Darkness, Megumin suffers from being too specialized. While being a master of arguably the strongest spell in the Detonation Series, Explosion Magic, it has too many dismerits. Moreover, she refuses to learn other spells and wastes all her skill points on increasing her raw destructive power, effectively making her a one-time-use glass cannon. -Magical Talent: Because she is a member of the Crimson Demons, Megumin has high stats in terms of Intelligence, being the highest on her party, and Magical Power, being naturally gifted in terms of magical ability and has been stated to have high mana reserves as a result. Were it not for her desire to focus solely on Explosion Magic, Megumin could even surpass Yunyun as an Arch Wizard, being a prodigy, who managed to even reformulate the Explosion chanting spell in order to make it more potent. Although she doesn't use other magic spells, Megumin is still very talented in other witchcrafts, like potions creation, although she can't control her MP emission. -Explosion Magic: A special branch magic of the Detonation Series that allows the user to summon a single beam of light, that detonates at the target, creating a devastating blast of pure magical power. It is the most powerful magic spell, learned by immortal beings like undead and gods, with enough spare skill points to learn it. Although the spell can damage ghosts, spirits, gods and demons, it has several demerits: it consumes too much MP, being a single shot spell (in Megumin's case, she always collapses since the spell also consumes her HP); the magic is also so powerful it also affects the surrounding landscape, being dangerous to use it in dungeons, that can collapse over the user; finally, its noise also attracts all the monsters in the surrounding area. -Skills: Besides magic, Megumin devotes all of her skill points into skills in order to improve the power of her explosions, instead of use them to increase her MP: -Explosion Magic Increase: Increases the power of Detonation, Blasting and Explosion magics. -High-Speed Incantation: Decreases the time of incantation. Thanks to this skill, Megumin doesn't need to recite an incantation, although it decreases her Explosion magic firepower. However, in the end of the series, she already mastered the spell to use its full power without incantation.

Equipment

-Magic Rod: A staff with a huge curved head, at the centre of which a piece of Manatite levitates, used for boosting the power of spells cast like a magic wand does. Originally fitted with regular blue Manatite when fashioned by Funifura's father before the rod was gifted to Megumin,[14] it was later upgraded with a piece of red high-quality Manatite.[4] -Light of Reflection Scroll: A scroll that allows the user to employ the Light of Reflection spell. Megumin used it in the fight against Host.[15] -Sword of Shack the Ripper: A sword belonging to Shack the Ripper, which Megumin wielded for a while. It requires high MP to cut through nonliving objects, but it is ineffective againts living beings.[16] -Highest-Quality Manatites: In the final fight against the Devil King, Kazuma gave to Megumin a bag full of pure Manatites, allowing her to use Explosion Magic multiple times at will. -Demon Ring: A cursed ring that grants the user "Demon Eyes", but with the price of slowly turn them into a demon. Megumin got it from Wiz's Shop, almost becoming a full demon (with a pair of horns) until Aqua lifted the curse.[17] -Crimson Eye Lightning: An electric eye beam. It could reflect Yunyun's Lightning, but it's too painful to the user. -Crimson Eye Bind: An eye beam that paralyzes the target. Personality

Megumin's most defining trait is her obsession for Explosion Magic. After being saved by a mysterious stranger using that spell, Megumin instantly fell in love with the Explosion Magic's unparalleled destructive power,[2] as well as its heat, the shock wave sensation over the body, smoke and glow,[3] reason why she dedicated years of her life studying and saving points in order to master the spell, while ignoring its many demerits.

After learning the Explosion Magic, Megumin started to come up with excuses to use it every day, both in quests or during her daily routine, recklessly using the spell at the first opportunity, sometimes just to show herself, relieve stress or gain XP, no matter how many problems she causes, although Megumin may grow anxious in delicate situations. While she gets excited about someone else joining her in the "Path of Explosion",[4] Megumin rejects any type of explosion that isn't Explosion Magic, such as Kazuma's tinymites.[5]

Like almost all Crimson Demons, Megumin has a chūnibyō personality, often making speeches using old Japanese dialect and striking cringe-worthy poses. However, her act can drop easily. She is also an attention seeker with delusions of grandeur (calling herself "the foremost arch wizard and wielder of Explosion Magic" and boasting about her genius and talent), and has a taste for strange names, "cool" stuff and destructive hobbies. Although Megumin also enjoys cute stuff, she doesn't admit it in order to keep her "cool" poise.

While Megumin is, according to Kazuma, weirdly smart[6] and has the most common sense of her party members,[7] she is quite childish and immature too. Megumin is short-tempered, as she often rises to provocations, even threatening to explode the houses of those who enrage her. Megumin also tends to be harsh with the ones she cares about, like Yunyun and Kazuma, although Megumin can be surprisingly assertive too.

Moreover, Megumin is very competitive too, even having a notebook to count her wins against Yunyun.[8] It is very common that Megumin tries to assert dominance over her friends, whatever in competitions, play and even in her love life, using her relationship with Kazuma to make them envy. Megumin is also a cheater who does whatever it takes to win, no matter how brute, reason why she was considered a "ruffian" in her school.[9]

Although Megumin is already old enough to get married in the Parallel World, she is still treated like a kid due to her underdeveloped appearance, which Megumin dislikes, as well as being called "loli" or "jailbait". She often tries to act like a mature woman, trying to drink alcohol and sending mixed signals she is interested in Kazuma, because she thinks that is the adult way of flirting.

Megumin is very self-conscious about her preadolescent body. She often has the excuse that her body will develop later, although her bad nutrition and genetics say otherwise.[10] Megumin is also very jealous of her friends' more developed bodies, even slapping their bosom in a fit of rage.[2] She is obsessed about having a stunning body too, getting interested in becoming a great spellcaster because she believes that if she becomes a great wizard, she would have "a huge rack".[10]

Due to her family being very poor, Megumin learned to get by herself early. She believes in the survival of the fittest, being merciless with monsters, even baby or cute ones, and used to hunt and steal her own food, eating even food remains, such as crusts of bread, and insects.[11] Megumin is also willing to use any underhanded method to survive, like stealing Yunyun's lunches at their duels in order to feed[2] and seizing the moment to blackmail Kazuma so she could join his party.[1]

At the start of the series, Megumin was a lone wolf, not caring for anyone except her sister (for whom she has a sister complex), nor mixing with her classmates in school,[12] and using friendship only as an excuse to share her problems[13] and suffering.[8] Yet, through the series, Megumin learned to open up to others and to care about people, becoming a kinder person, and even being a bit indulgent with her loved ones.

Lalatina Ford Dustiness (ダスティネス・フォード・ララティーナ), usually known as Darkness (ダクネス), is one of the main heroines of the KonoSuba main series. She is a crusader who joins Kazuma's party,[2] as well as a noble of the prestigious Dustiness House.[3]

Appearance

Darkness is a 5'6" tall young woman with graceful features and alabaster skin. She is well-endowed and also has light blue eyes and straight, long blonde hair, usually kept in a ponytail tied with a braid and red hair clips secured on both sides of her bangs. According to Kazuma, she is "drop-dead gorgeous".[4]

She is usually seen using a yellow and black sleeveless dress with silver trimmings, black chainmail, and a silver armor composed of metal greaves, sabatons, tasset, shoulder plate on her left side, wing-like cloth perched upon her right shoulder and a cuirass with a red bow.

Personality

Although Darkness looks like an orthodox and heroic knight at first glance, she is actually a masochistic pervert who feels pleasure with pain and humiliation, enjoying all types of abuse (both physical and moral). Darkness' supposed selfless desire to face the danger and protect her companions is actually a selfish desire to feel the pain of the opponents' attacks, and for such reason she constantly charges toward the enemy without regard for the consequences.

Darkness' masochist pleasure is well visible since she blushes from excitement and embarrassment easily. Darkness also moans when she suffers any type of verbal abuse, and becomes breathless when she is excited. While Darkness tries to hide her excitement, her voice goes suddenly high when she is tense or psyched, and Darkness is ecstatic and squirming after being attacked by some monster or opponent.

Darkness also has a wild imagination, having lewd fantasies about being harassed by others, freaking out the people she thinks want to take advantage of her by exposing what Darkness thinks to be their intentions.[5] It is her dream that one day, she will be captured by the Devil King's Army and suffer all types of torture.[6] Darkness also gets carried away in the moment, acting without thinking in many situations.

Darkness' masochism is evident on her type of men as well, as she prefers perverse, useless, alcoholic and even ugly men who would explore her body and look at her as a piece of meat.[6] The reason why Darkness wanted to join Kazuma's party is because she thought he was the type who would harass her female party members.[7] And while her masochism slowly decreased, it didn't fade away.

While Darkness enjoys shame, there are two types of embarrassment she doesn't like. As a woman, Darkness dislikes any hint about her weight and tough muscles,[8] and while she is tempted by cute outfits,[9] Darkness can't stand the humiliation of looking or sounding cute in public, reason why she is ashamed of her real cute name.[10] This comes down to the point that making a cute voice or wearing cute outfits feels like torture for her.[11]

Although Darkness is usually very perverted, she is still an innocent and pure maiden. Darkness is so inexperienced that, in one time when she tried to have intercourse with Kazuma, Darkness needed instructions since she had no idea of what she should do.[7] Darkness is also shy in lewd situations,[12] and although she always does remarks about her lack of experience, nobody believes her.[13]

However, as a Crusader, Darkness is a proud defender of the people, as well as a resolute law-abiding and a fervent follower of Eris Order doctrine. Her family contributed with the Eris Church for generations and Darkness herself used to pray for Eris everyday, asking for a friend, until she met and befriended with Chris.[14] Darkness is very proud of her religion, particularly when it means that she will suffer any kind of discrimination.[15]

Also, as a noble of a prestigious house, Darkness is well-mannered and knows more about etiquette and high society than her party members, and although the laters might embarrass her, she interacts normally with commoners. At first Darkness used to hide her heritage, never using her influence unduly even when it was necessary. However, after her true identity was exposed, Darkness slowly started to feel more proud of her noble status and to use her authority to support her party.

Finally, while Darkness is a rough, irritable and stubborn person, often reacting violently or seizing the moment to pay back, as a paladin, she is actually a selfless and altruistic knight, ready to sacrifice her own happiness for the sake of others. However, since Darkness is too reticent about her sacrifices and altruism, she often causes more problems than fixes. Also, throughout the series Darkness started to be more self-full and fulfill her desires, even using her authority and resources to get items and monsters that please her fetish.[16][11][17]

Abilities

Like Aqua and Megumin, Darkness suffers from being too specialized. As a Crusader, the class with the highest defense stats, she is a very effective tank. However, due to her masochism, she refuses to learn any offensive skills and intentionally leaves her accuracy so low that her sword is unable to hit anything, since her strength stat is so high that she could defeat most monsters before she could take any damage.

Stats: Darkness has high Strength, being able to fight against several guards without being stopped, easily breaking Beldia's armor when he was almost defeated, and protect Kazuma from being smashed by the Kowloon Hydra. Darkness also has high Vitality, as she has the large reservoir of HP needed to fight on the front lines for an extended period. Her HP is so vast that even while Kazuma used Drain Touch, a technique that typically stuns or even incapacitates targets, on her for an extended period she was still strong enough to easily overpower him.

-Physical Resistance: Resistance against physical damage. Darkness can withstand melee attacks, functioning as the traditional "meat shield" role for the most part. Where this is exacerbated, however, is in how durable she truly is, able to withstand attacks from high-level creatures such as the Hydra and a Zombie Dragon. This skill also affects both weapons and clothes. -Magic Resistance: Prevent magic from taking effect. Because of this ability, Darkness was able to survive both Megumin's Explosion Magic and Vanir's Murder-Ray. This skill also affects both weapons and clothes. -Debuff Resistance (All Types): Darkness got all separate skills for all the different status ailments.Decoy: Attracts the attention of monsters.Side Slash: A full powered horizontal slice.

Weakness: -Low Accuracy: Although Darkness has high physical stats, she is very clumsy, being unable to hit her targets, unless it happens by accident. And since Darkness refuses to learn any skill that could improve her Accuracy, like the Two-Handed Sword skill, due to her masochism. It is a recurring joke that she cannot hit anything.

Equipment: -Adamantite Armor: After defeating Vanir, Darkness received from the royal family a new special-order armor set[10] made with a bit of adamantite, the strongest metal existing in that world.[8] -Bind Item: Darkness used a powerful Bind item, whose effects could last for 3 days, on Kazuma in order to prevent him from going to Elroad.[18] -Pitch-Black Full Body Armor: In the final fight against the Devil King, Darkness used a armor full of magical power for the Crusader Class only, brought by Kazuma. However it was a cursed armor that drives the user berserk during fights, although it can be easily removed at will.
