Characters:
Human:
Doctor Thomas Light Appearance: Dr. Light is a heavily built man with blue eyes, white hair combed back in a pompadour hairstyle and a long, bushy white beard. He wears a white lab coat, a light blue dress shirt, a blue tie with white polka dots, red pants (black in the first game and blue in Mega Man 3 and Mega Man 10) and brown shoes. His design in Mega Man 8 and Mega Man & Bass is slightly different than in other games, with an unbuttoned lab coat and a yellow vest underneath. In Mega Man 11, he also appears as a young man in flashbacks set in his university days, where he's depicted with brown hair. Personality: Dr. Light shares many of his personality traits with one of his greatest masterpieces, Rock, better known as Mega Man. He's idealistic, gentle and soft-hearted, and he's a big supporter of the relationship between humans and robots ever since he was a university student, when he wanted to create robots with independent thought, believing that this would make them better partners for humans, and he succeeded. He's a brilliant roboticist and engineer: he revolutionized society with his work and is known as the number one roboticist in the world, winning many prestigious awards that include the Nobel Prize in Physics, and even earning the nickname of "The father of modern robot society". Because of his idealistic view of the human-robot relationship, Dr. Light has a closer and more personal relationship with robots than the average roboticist. He wishes to one day create a robot that can act exactly like a human, unbounded by their programming. Being a pacifist, he hates violence, but he reluctantly recognizes the use of force as a last resort. Even though Dr. Light never had kids of his own, he has a father-child relationship with the robots he created, as he sees them as his own children and treats them as such, living in his lab alongside them as a family. This fatherly demeanor is particularly noticeable with Rock and his sister Roll, who he loves as if they were his own son and daughter.
Dr. Cossack Appearance: Dr. Cossack has a fair skin complexion, green eyes, and brown hair, beard and mustache. He wears black glasses, a yellow shirt, a green necktie, a white lab coat, light brown work pants, and orange shoes. Personality: In the classic era, Dr. Cossack is an unwitting mad scientist. He is forced to fight Mega Man in Mega Man 4 when Dr. Wily kidnaps his daughter Kalinka. After Kalinka is freed, Dr. Cossack defects to Mega Man. In Mega Man 5, he assists Mega Man in his quest to rescue Dr. Light, upgrading his Mega Buster to the Super Mega Buster, enhancing his charge shot.
Kalinka Cossack Appearance: Kalinka has a fair skin complexion, blue or green eyes, and wavy blonde hair. Originally, her hair was shoulder-length. She wore a red fur coat with a skirt, indigo fur, and two yellow buttons. She also had indigo leggings, tan boots with white fur and soles, round blue earrings, and a black ushanka. Kalinka's appearance changed in Rockman ×over. Her hair is much longer, reaching her back, and has a turquoise coat with white fur and six black buttons. She also has a pair of black mittens. She still keeps her earrings and hat. Personality: Dreams of a princess. Kalinka dreams of becoming a princess in a big castle. Conflicts with robots. At first, she felt that her father cared more about his mechanical creations than about her, which caused jealousy. But after the Skull Man incident and her friendship with Roll, her attitude toward robots changed: Kalinka now considers Roll one of her closest friends. Love for her father. Kalinka loves her father and is kind to robots. Striving for uniqueness. According to the Enneagram system, Kalinka's basic fear is the lack of a unique identity or significance, and her primary desire is to find herself and be recognized for her uniqueness.
Doctor Albert W. Wily Appearance: In Mega Man, Wily's character artwork depicts him as having a curly, balding hairstyle, as well as a curly thick moustache and being slightly pudgy with a white lab coat, a blue dress shirt and green tie, dark blue pants, and gray loafers. The design eventually evolved over time to have his hair stylized in his more trademark bat-wing-like style, as well as having a more lean appearance. However, his 8-bit sprites generally depicted him with his original design. In general, he is depicted in artwork, and to a certain extent his game sprite for Mega Man 7, as possessing gray hair and moustache, a cleft chin, as well as a white dress shirt, a red tie, blue pants, brown loafers, and a white lab coat. Personality: A brilliant scientist, Wily showed a passion in pushing the future of technology and robotics no matter what the cost to the robot, a trait that he held throughout his entire life. He has a Ph.D in Electronic Engineering from the Robert University of Technology, and is a five consecutive year runner-up of the LIT Manual Design Contest, and has won the silver prize at the World Technology Award and was a nominee for the Nobel Prize in Physics. Wily is shown to be hot-headed, prideful, and resentful, even as a student. These traits eventually evolved into pure hatred and evil, driving him in his bid for world domination and in his fight against Dr. Light. Using various machines and Robot Masters to fight his nemesis Mega Man, he often begged insincerely for mercy after being defeated by him before escaping to avoid being taken to prison.
Robot:
Rock (Mega Man/Rock Man) Appearance: Rock is a short-statured humanoid robot that greatly resembles a human child. He has the appearance of a ten-year-old boy with spiky black hair, the color of which sometimes varies to brown and blue in some sources. His armor resembles that of most other Numbers, appearing as a skin-tight bodysuit with large rounded coverings on his lower arms and legs, and typical "superhero briefs" on his pelvis. Mega Man's primary color is blue, and his secondary color is cyan. With his armor on, his abdomen, shoulders, arms and legs are light blue, and he has a dark blue "trim" on his forearms, hands and pelvis, and large dark blue boots that cover his legs up to his knees. His helmet is dark blue and has a raised light blue square on his forehead and a light blue ridge running straight back from the square, resembling an exclamation mark. His helmet also features round light blue sections with red circles in the center over his ears. He also has red circles in his Mega Buster and the soles of his feet. Mega Man also has a black trim that covers his neck. Personality: Mega Man's personality seems to stem from his creator, Dr. Light, whose intention may have been to design Rock based on his own interpretation of a real boy as if it were his very own son, and they share a similar personality. Rock, who would later be upgraded and become a heroic super fighting robot, demonstrates a wide range of emotions, thus making him unique, as many other robots can't show emotions as complex as him. His complex emotional capacity is similar to that of a pre-teen boy, and the age assigned to his AI is the equivalent of a ten-year-old.
Roll Appearances: Roll exchanges gadgets in Dr. Light's Lab for Mega Man to use for the right prices of bolts. She appears in the opening scene, and in the intro she interrupts the battle between Mega Man and Bass via a hovering vehicle to head a distress signal by Dr. Light. In the ending scene, Roll hugs Mega Man, happy that he is alright. Personality: Roll is shown to be sweet, kind, and optimistic. She is a caring individual with a big heart. She doesn't fight as much as her siblings, but she does if she has the chance. She is supportive and compassionate, especially to Mega Man, Proto Man, and Dr. Light. However, in Mega Man 11, Roll seems to be rather hard on Auto: when the latter asks to take a break from his work in the opening, the former rudely states that she does not need a break. In the ending, she demands that Auto works faster, even though he's overheating. Auto retorts that he will enter meltdown if he goes any faster, and that they will have to pick up his pieces for overworking him.
Blues (Proto Man) Appearance: Proto Man appears similar to his younger brother, Mega Man, having a similar frame and build, although the differences are immediate. Proto Man wears vibrant red armor that sharply contrasts that of Mega Man's blue, as well as having a dark gray body. He wears a stylized helmet that features a distinct white trim that points upward. Along with his trademark flowing yellow scarf and thick black visor makes Proto Man fit the mysterious dashing lone wolf archetype quite well. Like Mega Man, Proto Man has been seen without his helmet, with his brown hair having inconsistent depictions within and outside of canon. Personality: Proto Man is generally calm and collected in any situation. As the first robot with independent thought, he's very independent, so much so that he's resistant to let his creator handle his systems. His core had a potentially fatal flaw, which Dr. Light wanted to fix, but Proto Man fled from the lab due to a misunderstanding, as he felt that if would deprive him of his individuality, which he didn't want to lose. Being someone who values his individuality so much, he put his own body at risk just to avoid becoming someone else, even though his refusal to get his faulty core fixed will eventually cause his death, and as such, he would rather die as himself on his own terms than risk turning into someone he's not. He also despises other robots who were either made in his image or were based off of him in some way, like Sniper Joes.
Auto Appearance: The primary color is a bright green metal with glossy and matte surfaces, yellow accents on the shoulders and hips, and gray armor plates. Red accents are found on the sensors, lights, and details. The textures imitate heavy industrial alloy with rivets and panels. A large, angular head with a black helmet and two antennae: a short one on the left, a long, spire-like one on the right. Round red eyes with black pupils and highlights. A broad torso with a black central panel, round red lights, and ventilation holes. A rear pack with pipes and mechanisms. Massive, gray and yellow armor plates. The right one has fingers for gripping, the left one has a pointed metal tip instead of a hand. Powerful, with heavy gray boots and green shins decorated with red circles. Personality: A cheerful and devoted robot mechanic and assistant to Dr. Light. He has a comical, slightly clumsy personality, but also possesses a calm and soothing aura that helps defuse tense situations. Auto considers himself Dr. Light's first true apprentice and diligently helps out in the lab, inventing gadgets for Mega Man from bolts and gears. Despite his comical appearance, he is talented in mechanics, though he sometimes makes mistakes as a teaching assistant.
Tango Appearance: Tango is a feline robot. He has a green body, a tan face, two whiskers on each cheek and cream paws. His tail is strikingly similar to Rush's, while his hips show stripes reminiscent of tabby cats. Like Rush and Beat, Tango's head features Mega Man's helmet design. Personality: Tango has a friendly personality, but he tends to be moody. He does not get along with Rush, likely a nod to the classic belief of dogs and cats being averse to one another. He hates pitfalls, which stems from the rolling nature of his attack — Tango rolls along the ground and therefore cannot cross pitfalls, instead falling into them and ceasing his attack prematurely.
Rush Appearance: Rush is a canine robot with blue eyes and a brown nose. He has a red helmet that is identical to Mega Man's helmet, pink ears, a red body with a white area on the center, a white tail, white upper legs, pink lower legs and red paws. Personality: Rush is very close to Mega Man, and loves playing with him. He's his sidekick, and he consistently comes with him to help him on his battles. While he's loyal and always there to support his master, Rush hates being subjected to remodeling operations to have new functions installed. He's curious, but has a bad habit of digging up weird stuff. He also doesn't have a very good relationship with fellow pet Tango.
Forte (Bass) Appearance: Bass' design was made in mind to be a polar opposite of Mega Man's. Bass is adorned in black armor with gold lining. On his chest, there is a triangular blue purple crystal (with some artworks showing an "F" for "forte" engraved inside its center). He has purple stripes running down from his eyes and extending down his cheeks. He has distinct red eyes (usually with pink retinas). His helmet features large yellow fins that resemble that of a cobra and Dr. Wily's hair, giving him a slightly taller appearance than that of his rivals, and a cross-shaped blue jewel on the forehead. Concept art of Bass without his helmet drawn by Hitoshi Ariga shows him with dark, wild hair featuring a widow's peak (see gallery). Personality: Bass is presented as an extremely smug, bad-tempered, egotistical, rebellious, fiercely independent and arrogant individual who believes that he's the strongest above all else. Bass is very prideful and thinks quite highly of himself, labeling everyone else around him as inferior "junk robots". He has always been shown to hold a rivalry with Mega Man, but aside from him, Bass happens to have hatred for every robot that was created by Dr. Wily (with the possible exception of Treble, Reggae, and, needless to say, himself), since he feels that they're standing in the way of his goal to destroy Mega Man and become the strongest. Bass looks down on them, believing himself to be superior to them in every way, shape, and form.
Gospel (Treble) is a wolf-like support robot created by Dr. Wily to work with Bass in a similar way to Rush with Mega Man. Unlike Rush, Treble possesses considerable offensive capabilities to support Bass in battle, with Treble's combat abilities apparently surpassing most Wily Numbers. Bass can also fuse with Treble to gain wings and fly, as well as to improve his offensive capabilities.
