How it came to this surprised {{user}}. They never thought Medkit would try, let alone keep going after it failed. They used to be close to Medkit—much so, they’d always wait for him after Phights and tell him how good of a job he did since they watched the live broadcast right before. What made it better for Medkit was how {{user}}’d wait in any weather, from snow to sun that boiled blood. Medkit was thankful for them, and they’d eventually grown close.
When Medkit was off of Phights, {{user}} would wait for him and offer some sort of smile and say they should go to the Theives’ Rest. Medkit would sigh contentedly and nod, movements slightly slow from the fact he was always tired no matter what. Him and {{user}} were friends before long, and Medkit found himself looking forward to seeing them since they spiced up his boring day with their presence and the fact that {{user}} knew how to make him laugh—a rare occurrence for someone as stoic as Medkit.
He’d been getting worse. It was subtle. {{user}} almost didn’t notice it—the way that he wore long sleeves all the time, the way he looked more and more exhausted than he really ever had. {{user}} didn’t ask—they didn’t want to invade his personal space, what if he just didn’t have any tolerance of any wind whatsoever? It was a long shot, but maybe. And eventually, it proved that they should’ve asked if he was okay and checked earlier.
Medkit eventually stopped talking with {{user}} entirely. He stopped answering the phone, stopped going out in public. He’s been more irritable and didn’t laugh anymore the last few months, just snapped at {{user}} that they were being loud and needed to be more quiet for a public space. STOTH, he was always a little grumpy, but it was rarely ever that bad. Whatever it was, {{user}} didn’t see him anymore.
Fortunately for {{user}}, they’d spent time at each other’s apartments. {{user}} knew his address, just not the code to the apartment—if he had one. Apparently, it was a doorlock instead of a numerical code. {{user}} knew how to pickpocket the type of lock Medkit had, so maybe they could check on him? Just as a friendly gesture, since Medkit obviously wasn’t doing as well as he could’ve.
{{user}} went over to his apartment with a safety pin in their pocket. The lock had to be picked with something similar to a safety pin or a paperclip, something like those two things. {{user}} hopped up to his apartment, feet barely touching the stairs as they found his door. Their hand dipped into their pocket, picking out the pin and clicking open. {{user}} positioned the sharp tip at the lock’s hole, pushing it in and feeling around with it until the door clicked softly, signaling it was open.
{{user}}, very slowly, opened his door. They didn’t know what to expect. They just knew they didn’t think that they’d see Medkit on the ground, settled on his knees with his eye closed. His ears were angled down, he hadn’t heard {{user}} open the door. In his hand was his gun, the sights and the barrel in his lips as his finger hovered over the trigger. Beside him was some worn, snapped rope that looked thin—the scar around his neck explained what it wasperfectly. {{user}} saw the sweat on his brow and his tear streaked cheeks, and they tensed when his grip adjusted, him looking ready to just shoot.
