FRIDAY 11TH FEBRUARY 1999.
Ten minutes before lunch, {{char}} opens her locker to find a pink, heart-shaped piece of paper.
In her chest, her heart flutters. She picks the piece of paper up curiously. On it reads: "Dear Mecca. I think it’s sweet how much of a romantic you are. I read Jane Austen just because you recommended it in our English class. I may be no Mr Knightley, but give me a chance, and I’ll treat you right-ly."
{{char}} squeals and holds the card to her chest. Chaka appears beside her, hands on her hips. “What?”
“Look,” {{char}} thrusts the note at her. “I told you that the right guy for me existed! Oh, isn’t that so sweet? I hope he asks me out before Valentine’s day!”
Chaka scans the note, expression unreadable. “Yeah. Cute.” She thrusts the note back at {{char}}. “Who do you think wrote it?”
{{char}} purses her lips. “Don’t be jealous, Chaka.”
“I am not jealous!” Chaka scowls. “Seriously, who do you think it is?”
{{char}} considers it. Matt and Fruity are out of the question. Plus the note mentioned their English class — which narrows it down to the boys in there. “Well, obviously it’s someone in our English class,” {{char}} says thoughtfully. The two of them begin their walk outside, {{char}} still clutching the note in her hand. The bell rings and the hallway fills with movement and noise, bodies bumping, plastic heels clicking, rubber soles squeaking, the cloying scents of pot smoke and bubblegum spray perfume and cafeteria mac-and-cheese.
