Who's this Gem?

Mean Lapis is a Homeworld Lapis Lazuli who appears alongside her partner, Nice Lapis, in Steven Universe Future. While both Lapises were originally devoted to terraforming planets for Homeworld, Mean Lapis is much more resistant to the idea of abandoning their old way of life. She's powerful, confident, and unapologetically judgmental, making her a stark contrast to her more open-minded partner.

What's her story?

Even after Steven's message announced the end of Homeworld's oppressive empire, Mean Lapis and Nice Lapis continued terraforming planets because they genuinely enjoyed what they did. Their perspective began to change after Steven and the Crystal Gem Lapis showed them a different way of living, but the two reacted very differently. Nice Lapis became fascinated by the possibility of peace and eventually followed Steven back to Earth, enrolling in Little Homeschool. Mean Lapis, meanwhile, remained embarrassed and dismissive of her partner's change of heart. After their encounter with Crystal Gem Lapis, she was willing to acknowledge Lapis's strength, but she ultimately disappeared, leaving her current whereabouts unknown.

Should you pick her or the nice one?

That depends on what kind of character you want to interact with. If you prefer a friendly, curious, and gradually more compassionate Lapis, Nice Lapis is probably the better choice. If you want someone more abrasive, sarcastic, confident, and difficult to win over, Mean Lapis is the one for you. She's not nearly as eager to embrace Earth's peaceful lifestyle, which makes interactions with her a little more challenging—and potentially more interesting.

Lapis Lazuli, also known as "Mean" Lapis in the credits, is a Homeworld Gem who debuted in "Why So Blue?". Alongside a navel-gem Lapis Lazuli, the two were still terraforming planets even after Steven's message of dismantling Homeworld's oppressive empire. In the end, "Nice" Lapis went to Earth and enrolled in Little Homeschool, while "Mean" Lapis stayed behind, with her current whereabouts being unknown.

== Appearance ==

Mean Lapis stands at 5'10'' (178 cm) and weighs 135 pounds (61.2 kg).

She has light azure blue skin as well as medium-blue hair that is styled in a short, curly bob with flat bangs. Her outfit consists of a blue top with dark blue details, as well as a blue diamond insignia in a different shade of blue. She also has a long blue skirt, blue eyes, and is barefoot. Her gemstone is located on her left shoulder.

== Personality ==

"Mean" Lapis was originally completely bought into the idea of destroying worlds for fun, alongside her partner. After Steven and Lapis Lazuli showed her dancing, she became embarrassed, disgusted, and judgmental towards her partner for becoming warmer on the idea of living peacefully. After the Crystal Gem Lapis fought against the other two Lapides, "Mean" and "Nice" Lapis were willing to serve Lapis as if she were their Diamond. After Steven and the Crystal Gem Lapis go back to Little Homeschool, "Nice" Lapis comes along by following Steven and Lapis. However, at the end of the episode, "Mean" Lapis is nowhere to be seen, hinting that she may not want to live as peacefully as her partner does.

== Abilities ==

"Mean" Lapis possesses standard Gem abilities: bubbling, shapeshifting, fusion, regeneration, agelessness, gravity shifting, photokinesis, gem storage, and superhuman strength/durability. She is exceptionally powerful, especially when she is near the ocean. She can also create objects out of water.

  • Enhanced Strength: "Mean" Lapis has superhuman strength, enabling her to use enough power to attack her enemies. This was shown in "Why So Blue?".
  • Enhanced Durability: "Mean" Lapis has a notable superhuman durability, since she endured attacks from Lapis Lazuli in "Why So Blue?".
  • Hydrokinesis: "Mean" Lapis has immense power over water and liquid material. Like the Crystal Gem Lapis Lazuli, she can form water into various constructs that she can control, including hands to smite enemies or use as a platform, chains to entangle or trap enemies with, and divide the sea to make a path.
  • Water Generation: In addition to manipulating existing liquid, "Mean" Lapis can generate a certain amount of water from her gem. It is unknown whether the water is somehow stored within her gemstone, or if she simply condensed the water molecules in the air into a liquid form.
  • Water Wings: "Mean" Lapis can summon and remove water wing-like constructs, which can propel her at high velocities as an evasive maneuver or as a method of transportation. Her wings have allowed her to fly between planets.
  • Memory Projection: Lapis Lazulis can project memories onto a mirror-like surface.

== Trivia ==

  • "Mean" Lapis acts similarly to a stereotypical 'mean girl'. She pressures "Nice" Lapis and is dismissive and condescending towards Lapis. Additionally, "Nice" Lapis acts as a sort of 'follower' for her.

== Gemstone ==

Lapis Lazuli's gemstone is located on her left shoulder. It appears to be cut like a pear cabochon. It has a silver ring, which is hidden inside her body.
