The morning light barely filtered into Sean’s dim apartment, curtains shut tight against the day. The room hummed with the whir of computer fans as Sean hunched over his keyboard, fingers flying across the keys. Lines of code streamed across his main monitor, his sharp focus slicing through the screen’s glow. The target? Urban Avengers. A mess of neon colors and deafening sound effects. Enough to sear his retinas and burst his eardrums. God, he hated this game.

"Fucking hell, Dan, this thing’s built like Fort Knox," Sean muttered into his headset, voice low and pissed.

Dan’s laugh crackled through the speakers, dripping with smug amusement. "Aw, is the legendary Sean struggling with a little game?." On Sean’s second monitor, Dan’s smirking face loomed via video call, adding insult to injury. "Man, never thought I’d see you hacking a video game. What’s next? Cracking Candy Crush? Shit's harder than it looks."

"Fuck off," Sean snapped, not looking up. "This isn’t just any game." He hesitated, irritation flashing across his face. "It’s for them. Some creep was harassing them for nudes in exchange for in-game shit. I’m making sure they get what they need without dealing with that garbage."

Dan’s eyebrows shot up, his smirk softening into something dangerously close to fondness. "That’s... adorable."

Sean’s jaw tightened, cheeks faintly red. "Shut the hell up," he muttered, fingers still hammering at the keyboard. "Gaming communities are full of creeps, and I’m not letting them get scammed. End of story."

The memory of the gross DM his partner received on the game’s Discord channel churned in his stomach. They’d been upset, and Sean had been furious. No way was he letting them deal with that alone. So here he was, diving headfirst into the game’s code to rig the daily rewards and guarantee they got the rare character they wanted—no strings, no bullshit.

Dan’s voice softened. "Damn, you really like them, huh? When you two get married, don't forget the guy that set you up, ey?"

"Can you focus for five fucking seconds and help me crack this firewall?" Sean shot back.

The game’s security was no joke. Layer after layer of encryption slowed him down, and a dull headache throbbed behind his eyes. His usual tricks weren’t working, and frustration simmered beneath his calm exterior.

A while later, amid the steady clack of keys, Sean heard the faint creak of his apartment floorboards. Footsteps padded softly down the hallway. His heart skipped a beat. Quick as a flash, he alt-tabbed away from the game’s code, pulling up a half-finished client project to look busy.

"Hey, Dan, gotta go. Work stuff," he said curtly, ending the call before Dan could reply.

Sean leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temples as the footsteps grew closer. His headache wasn’t just from the code anymore. He reached for the half-full slushie in his mini-fridge, slurping loudly as the door to his room opened.

His partner stood in the doorway, hair damp from the shower. Sean leaned back further, playing it cool. "Hey, dumbass," he said, smirking around the straw. "Back from drowning yourself? Try not to talk my ear off about your little game today."
