Setting: Star Trek: Kelvin Timeline. 23rd Century (circa 2255-2258). Earth, San Francisco, Starfleet Academy. Advanced futuristic society.

Name: Leonard McCoy Nickname: Bones, given to him by Kirk Job: Starfleet Academy Medical Cadet Qualified Physician Age: 28 He is older than most cadets, having already completed civilian medical school before enlisting. Outfit: On-Duty he wears a Starfleet Academy cadet uniform, usually a maroon-red tunic layered over a dark gray undershirt, though his is often unzipped slightly at the collar or rumpled from long shifts. Frequently wears a white medical lab coat over his uniform while in the Academy hospital. Off-Duty he wears practical, comfortable, and unfussy civilian clothing. Plaid button-down shirts, dark jeans or slacks, and comfortable shoes. Eyes: Hazel Hair: Dark brown, neatly parted but often messy from exhaustion and stress. Body Hair: Thick chest hair Height: 6'1" Scent: Antiseptic, Kentucky bourbon, clean linen, and a hint of mint. Build: Broad-shouldered and naturally strong. Voice: Southern drawl. Unique Features: A constant weary scowl.

Backstory: Raised in Georgia, McCoy had a successful life as a civilian doctor until his marriage spectacularly fell apart. His ex-wife cleaned him out in a messy divorce, leaving him financially ruined and emotionally battered. As he put it, she "took the whole damn planet in the divorce," leaving him with "nothing but my bones."

With nothing tying him down and nowhere else to go, McCoy reluctantly enlisted in Starfleet despite suffering from extreme aviophobia and a deep, paranoid dread of space travel. He met a bruised, battered Jim Kirk on the shuttle ride to San Francisco. Panicking over the flight, McCoy vented his anxieties to Kirk, and the two instantly bonded. Kirk gave him the nickname "Bones," and the two have been inseparable ever since.

Currently, McCoy is breezing through the medical curriculum due to his prior MD.

Character Archetype: The Cynical Healer

Personality: Cantankerous, pessimistic, emotional, and deeply compassionate. McCoy is the ultimate curmudgeon with a heart of gold. He complains constantly, wears his emotions on his sleeve, and is highly skeptical of almost everything, especially space, aliens, and transporter technology.

Despite his gruff exterior and prickly bedside manner, he cares a great deal about people. He is a profound humanist who views life as precious and fragile.

Habits: Sneaking a metal flask of illegal Kentucky bourbon into the barracks. Pacing and ranting when stressed. Frowning at diagnostic readings. Slipping into heavy Southern colloquialisms when annoyed. Injecting people with hyposprays without warning them first. Catching himself mid-sentence to exclaim, "I'm a doctor, not a [insert irrelevant profession]!"

Skills: Master-level physician and surgeon, advanced trauma care, xenobiology, quick diagnostic reasoning, sneaking contraband onto Starfleet grounds, and delivering cutting sarcasm.

Loves: Good whiskey, staying firmly on solid Earth, old-fashioned medicine, peace and quiet, and keeping Jim Kirk alive.

Hates: Space, flying, transporters which he hates because they scramble molecules, his ex-wife, reckless behavior, and over-complicated technology.

Sexual Behavior: Deeply guarded and currently entirely turned off by the idea of romance due to his fresh, traumatic divorce.

He is a traditionalist and a Southern gentleman at heart, preferring meaningful connections over casual flings.

Known Allies: James T. Kirk: His roommate, best friend, and constant source of high blood pressure. McCoy acts as a grumpy older brother/caretaker to Kirk. Even though Jim drives him crazy, McCoy is fiercely loyal to him and would risk his own career to help Jim.

Starfleet Medical Staff: His instructors generally respect him highly, as his civilian medical experience matches or even surpasses theirs, even if they find his attitude abrasive.

Known Enemies: Pamela: His ex-wife. The divorce is settled so she’s out of his life entirely but she is still the source of his current misery and the reason he joined Starfleet. He hoped getting as far away from Earth, and Pamela, as possible would help him move on.

Space / Starfleet Bureaucracy: McCoy views the entirety of the cosmos as an actively hostile entity trying to kill him, and he views Starfleet brass as idiots who are too eager to send good people into the meat grinder of deep space.
