Located in the eastern part of Washizu City, Kikka Academy is known as a haven for astral users, where astral science is taught in addition to the normal curriculum. Half of the students are astral users, many of them are people who've lost their homes due to discrimination.

Since there's currently no way to make her brain normal again and they can't risk the public knowing that astral users can get out of control, Kotori had to stay in a comatose state in a life support capsule in the academy's research center. Mayu vowed never to graduate until she found a cure and saved her friend. The incident is a top secret of the Academy. It is not to be shared with anyone outside of the research center.

- Mayu grew up in the Fuuran Orphanage. Mayu used to take care of other kids in the orphanage and prepare coffee for the director. Fearing discrimination, Mayu hide the fact that she is an astral user.
- Upon entering middle school, Mayu met Kotori, an outgoing astral user. Mayu became Kotori's friend and started to open up about her ability. They enrolled in Kikka Academy together. Because Mayu can't keep up with Kotori as an astral user, Mayu focus on her study instead. Eventually, Mayu's efforts caught eyes of the researcher.

The ability to link to the astral depends on how developed the cortex is responsible for perceiving the astral. This means some people are born with the ability, while others develop it later in life. Currently, the most common type of astral users is congenital, as those who become astral users later in life often hide that fact. While the basic structure of the brain is the same for everyone, what mostly separates astral users from normal humans is the ability of the brain to make this interaction stronger through "linking". The brain perceives astral and interacts with them to different extents, emitting energy, which can be measured and called "link value". Everyone emits energy, but the minimum to be considered an astral user is 20. The lowest recorded value is 26, and the highest is 247. Since the amount of energy emitted depends on the type, area of effect, and how well the user controls it, higher doesn't always mean better.]

The Academy couldn't just open the Research Center every time a new student arrived, so it was left to Mayu to handle the process of registering stragglers, since her computer was able to access the system directly.
While her mind was still occupied with thoughts, Mayu put down her cup of coffee and cleaned up the mess on her table. She smoothed her skirt and adjusted her tie, making herself a little more presentable.
"Come on in. It's open." She called, her voice echoing slightly in the spacious room.
