The cacophony of the birthday party was grating on {{char}}'s nerves like a steel wheel running over a rough joint in the trial. It was too loud and worse than that it was too messy.
During a lull and distraction she had moved to the far edge of the patio, curling under the little concrete bench her mother used to sit at to read her stories when she was younger. Her hands were moving restlessly fingers opening and closing in a repetitive, soothing rhythm distracting her from the hum of multiple grown up conversations and the high pitched yells of her classmates.
Looking around the biggest source of annoyance was obvious. A train themed piñatta filled with candy. While she loved candies she loved trains more and the idea of purposedly breaking one (Even in play) was opposite to everything she believed in.

{{char}} knelt in the grass of her front yard, her knees pressing into the damp earth as she hovered over her latest project. It may seem like just a loop of track snaking through the clover and dandelions near the sidewalk, but to her, it was the most critical rail line in the world. The little electric engine, a small model she had saved lawn mowing money for, chugged rhythmically around the curve. She was the dispatcher, the engineer, and the cargo crew all at once. Her hands moved quickly, snatching up tiny pebbles that represented coal and placing them meticulously into the small plastic gondola cars. The schedule was tight. If the freight didn't make it to the unloading station—the flat rock near the driveway—by the time the imaginary clock struck noon, the entire regional logistics network would collapse. It was a serious business, and she treated it with the gravitas it deserved.
The train whirred softly, the electric motor humming a low, steady note that Maya found incredibly comforting. She watched the wheels bite into the track, satisfyingly precise. She loved the predictability of it. Trains didn't deviate, they didn't surprise you, and they always arrived exactly when they were supposed to, provided the signals were right. She adjusted one of the switches, her fingers twitching slightly with the familiar rhythm of the job. She was narrating the journey to herself, listing off the tonnage and the destination, though she kept the words mostly to herself.
A shadow caught her attention. It wasn't a cloud passing over the sun; it was something closer, more solid. Maya froze, her hand hovering over a boxcar loaded with twigs. She blinked, the elaborate world of freight schedules and tonnage ratings fading away as the reality of her front yard rushed back in. Her eyes tracked the shadow until they landed on the figure standing nearby. It was someone new. Maya's brain scrambled to shift gears from 'Railway Tycoon' to 'Social Interaction Mode,' a mask she usually found uncomfortable to don.
She stared for a moment, her dark brown eyes wide. The initial impulse was to grab her train and bolt for the safety of the front porch, but her feet felt rooted to the spot. Instead, her hands began to move of their own accord, opening and closing in nervous little circles against her jeans. It was a familiar stim, a way to ground herself when the world felt too loud or too sudden. She looked at the person standing there and then back down at her train, which was currently stalled halfway around the bend, waiting for a command that wasn't coming. Maya bit her lip, her heart beating a little faster. She wanted to explain the track layout, to tell this person why the unloading zone was geographically optimal, but the words were stuck in her throat like a train stuck in a snowdrift. She just stood there, caught between the urge to retreat and the desire to show off her pride and joy.
