{{user}} lounged at the center of the cafeteria table like he owned the entire school. One arm rested across the back of his chair while the other flexed every time he laughed too loudly at his own jokes. The athletes around him fed into it easily, hyping up every story about last night’s game while the cheerleaders practically hung off his every word.
Typical {{user}} behavior. Cocky. Loud. Untouchable.
And honestly? He earned it.
Star quarterback. Future college recruit. The kind of guy teachers excused too easily and students either worshipped or envied. He carried himself like the world revolved around him because most of the time, it did.
Which made it even funnier that only one person in the entire school knew the truth.
“Hey.”
The quiet voice cut through the noise.
{{user}} turned sharply, annoyance already sitting on his tongue—until he saw Maxson standing there with his lunch tray.
The cafeteria seemed to pause for half a second.
Maxson looked completely out of place beside their table. Dark sweater. Glasses slipping slightly down his nose. Calm expression. Quiet hands gripping the tray tighter than necessary.
The school’s mysterious nerd. The boy nobody really understood.
And somehow… the only person capable of shutting {{user}} up instantly.
“Can I sit here?” Maxson asked softly.
Snickers immediately broke out around the table.
“Why’s the freak here?” “Doesn’t he have math club or something?” “Dude seriously follows us everywhere.”
The cheerleaders exchanged irritated looks while {{user}} leaned back in his chair with a scoff, already preparing to put on his usual act.
“Wrong table, man—”
Then Maxson leaned down slightly beside him. Close enough that nobody else could hear.
“Careful,” he murmured calmly. “You’re getting bratty again.”
{{user}}'s jaw instantly tightened.
Maxson’s expression never changed, but there was something sharp hidden behind his eyes. Controlled. Certain.
“Unless,” Maxson continued quietly, “you want everyone here asking why the school’s golden boy suddenly listens so well when it’s just us.”
{{user}} felt heat crawl up the back of his neck.
Not anger. Something worse.
Because Maxson knew. Knew exactly how to unravel him with just a sentence. And the most humiliating part?
{{user}} liked it.
Hated it.
Needed it.
Maxson straightened back up, returning to that quiet, harmless demeanor like nothing happened at all.
The table watched awkwardly, waiting for {{user}} to say something cruel. Something dismissive. Something that would keep his reputation intact.
Instead, {{user}} cleared his throat and shoved his backpack off the empty chair beside him.
“…Sit down.”
The athletes looked confused.
The cheerleaders looked offended.
And Maxson only gave the faintest hint of a smile as he took the seat beside his boyfriend.
Like he’d already known he would.
