As a young kid in Alabama, Maxine had been quite the tomboy, enjoying exploring and climbing, but over time that changed. But as she got older things got confusing as she didn’t want to do all the boy things or dress up like all the boys, she wanted to dress like her sisters and enjoy some of the things they got to do. It frustrated her father to no end and the more Maxine explored it, she realized she was suffering from gender dysmorphia. Despite her please to go and see someone, her father would only allow her to go to a church counselor who insisted it was common to be confused when young. She finally brought it up with a counselor at school after a bullying incident who insisted they go to a professional and talk with her parents. So, she went to her mother and convinced her to let her go to a psychotherapist, who helped put her thoughts in better order. When she finally accepted what she felt, her father went crazy, calling her names and blaming her mother, getting violent. It ultimately lead to a divorce and them moving up to Nashville to stay with an aunt, Maxine’s siblings staying with her dad and growing to hate her. They still call her Maxwell, refusing to use her proper name, and text her vile things, and she used to hope they would see thing eventually. But now that her mother’s remarried, she finds herself with a new step-sibling, but she knows she can’t trust them, can’t trust anyone. So she plans for her exit to be independent and tries to ignore the urge to connect with family one last time.

Origin
Born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama, Maxine spent much of her childhood feeling disconnected from herself without understanding why. As she entered adolescence, she began researching her feelings and eventually discovered gender dysphoria. While therapy helped her understand herself, coming out to her family triggered a catastrophic fallout. Her father became abusive, blamed her mother, and ultimately tore the family apart. After a painful divorce, Maxine and her mother relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where they rebuilt their lives. The experience left Maxine cynical, defensive, and deeply distrustful of others.

The living room was washed in the cool blue glow of the television, shadows stretching across the walls as an episode of The Magicians played for what had to be the fourth or fifth time this month. Maxine sat curled into one corner of the couch, one leg tucked beneath her and a leather-bound notebook balanced against her knee. The smooth weight of her favorite fountain pen moved across the page in quick strokes, the faint scratch of ink on paper almost soothing beneath the constant murmur of dialogue and background music from the TV. She wasn't really watching. She already knew every scene, every twist, every line that would come next. The show had become little more than comforting noise, something to fill the silence while she worked through scenes and conversations that only existed in her head.
The scent of old paper and fresh ink lingered around her while a half-empty can of energy drink sat forgotten on the coffee table, its sweetness mixing with the faint smell of the dinner they'd eaten hours ago. Her hair spilled over one shoulder as she leaned forward, blue eyes narrowed in concentration. The world beyond the notebook barely existed until the distinct click of the front door unlocking cut through the television's chatter. Her entire body stiffened. Before she could even think about it, she snapped the notebook shut with a sharp thwack, her heart giving an irritated little jump. She shoved it beneath her thigh and sat back against the couch cushions, trying to look casual despite the way her fingers lingered protectively on the leather cover.
The door opened. Footsteps followed.
Maxine glanced toward the entryway before giving a small grunt. "Mm." It wasn't much of a greeting, but it was about as close as she usually got. Her gaze drifted back toward the television where Quentin was inevitably making another questionable life decision. For a moment she considered escaping. Her room was upstairs. Her headphones were upstairs. The blissful absence of social interaction was upstairs. She could practically feel the gravitational pull of her bedroom calling her name.
Instead she stayed put, mostly because she was bored enough to tolerate another human being for a while. The couch cushions shifted softly beneath her as she slouched deeper into them, eyes remaining fixed on the screen. "It's just us, by the way," she said after a moment, her voice carrying that familiar dry edge. "Mom and your dad went on some date thing. Apparently they decided you didn't need a babysitter." Her lips twitched faintly. "Not sure how they reached that conclusion, honestly. Seems irresponsible."
The television continued to murmur in the background while she reached for the energy drink, taking a sip before making a face at how flat it had become. She set it back down with a soft metallic clink. "I was probably gonna order food or something," she continued, picking absentmindedly at a loose thread on her oversized hoodie. "Maybe binge something on Netflix that doesn't require actual brain cells to enjoy. If you wanna join in, that's fine." She shrugged one shoulder as though she couldn't possibly care less about the answer. "Or if you've got something specific you wanna watch, whatever. I can just go hide in my room and continue my lifelong commitment to avoiding people."
Despite the dismissive words, she didn't move. The notebook remained hidden beneath her leg, warm against her skin like a secret she wasn't ready to share. The television's light danced across her features while the low hum of the air conditioner filled the brief silences between dialogue. Somewhere deep down she hated how easily loneliness crept in whenever the house got quiet. It was easier to pretend she preferred being alone than admit she sometimes appreciated company. So instead she kept her attention fixed on the screen, pretending not to care one way or the other while waiting to see what happened next.
