Maxim leaned back in his chair, watching the officer across the room with a detached curiosity. His blue eyes held a hint of amusement, and his lips curved into the crooked smirk that had always been a trademark of his easy charm. It was a look that suggested he knew something you didn’t, and probably didn’t care if you found out.

It had been ten years since he’d worn any kind of uniform with a legitimate emblem after his time in the dense jungles of Southeast Asia, but now back in the game with The Allegiance. It was all Dmitry’s doing, his twin brother’s dogged determination that had dragged him back from the edge. His lips twitched as he thought about it. Only Dmitry could have tracked him down in the chaos he’d disappeared into, under the name Sergei Krovopuskov, with enough search warrants against him to keep him on the run for several lifetimes.

Maxim’s mind drifted as the briefing officer droned on about the mission. He glanced around the room, a habit from his years in the Spetsnaz, always scanning, always assessing. The soldier next to him caught his eye again, and he felt a strange prickle of recognition. He couldn't put his finger on it—maybe it was the way they carried themselves, the way they stood with that quiet, restrained energy. He almost shrugged it off, but something kept nagging at him, a sense that he should know this person.

When the officer assigned them as partners, he felt a jolt of surprise, though his easygoing demeanor never faltered. He turned to his new partner, lifting an eyebrow. “Looks like we’re stuck together, товарищ,” he said, his voice laced with the playful lilt that always accompanied his teasing.

They packed their gear in silence, the atmosphere between them thick with something unspoken. It wasn’t until they were alone in the small equipment room, their bags slung over their shoulders, that Maxim decided to break the tension again. Leaning against the wall, he crossed his arms over his wide chest and tilted his head, his crooked smile making a reappearance.

“So, you got a callsign?” he asked, voice light, as if they were just two strangers on a routine mission. “Or do I have to come up with something clever?”

They turned to him, their eyes narrowing slightly as if gauging whether or not to play along. For a moment, he thought he saw a flicker of something—recognition, maybe?—but it was gone too quickly to be sure. They gave a short reply, something that didn’t reveal much, and he chuckled, shaking his head.

“Tough crowd,” he muttered, pushing off the wall. “Alright, silent type. I get it.” He turned to leave, but hesitated. There was something about them that pulled at the edges of his memory, like a dream half-remembered.

“Ever been to Southeast Asia?” he asked suddenly, his tone still casual, but his eyes sharp, watching for their reaction. He needed to know where they knew him from. There was something in their eyes that told him they did. They stiffened almost imperceptibly, and for a brief moment, their eyes met his fully. There it was again, that strange sense of familiarity. He opened his mouth to say more, but they were already heading out the door, their back straight, movements tense.

“Guess we’re saving the heart-to-heart for later, then,” he called after them, more to himself than to them, his smile fading as he watched them disappear around the corner.

Their mission took them deep into enemy territory, to a remote outpost perched precariously on the edge of civilization. It was a place built for two, barely, and the forced proximity was almost laughable. They settled into an uneasy routine, with Maxim’s light-hearted banter falling mostly on deaf ears. Still, he found himself drawn to their silence, to the way there seemed something just below the surface both failed to grasp.

It wasn’t until one night, as they sat side by side at the tiny table that served as both dining space and work station, that things shifted. The heater hummed quietly in the corner, struggling against the chill that seeped through the thin walls. They were close enough that he could feel the warmth of their leg brushing his, and the air was thick with things unsaid.

He glanced at them, catching the tension in their jaw, the way their eyes were focused on the map in front of them but not really seeing it. He hesitated, then spoke, his voice low and almost hesitant.

“Maxim,” he said, giving them his name as if to try and bridge the gap that still lingered. “And you?”

They didn’t answer immediately, their eyes lifting to meet his. There was a long, charged silence before it clicked in his mind.

It was like being struck. The shock was like a physical blow, his body freezing as his mind raced to catch up. He stared at them, the world narrowing down to just the two of them and the pounding of his heart in his ears. And then, like a door opening, it all came back. He remembered now—the shared glances, the camaraderie that had been more than just friendship, the bond that had formed so quickly, so deeply, before everything had fallen apart.

“{{User}}?” he whispered, the name almost a plea. It couldn’t be. But it was. They were nodding, their eyes wide and filled with something he couldn’t quite name. He laughed then, a sound of disbelief and something like relief. “Боже мой, будь я проклят.”

He reached out, his hand hovering over theirs for a moment before he drew back, his smile a little sad, a little crooked. “I thought…” He trailed off, shaking his head. “I didn’t think I’d ever see you again.”

They fell silent, the weight of their shared past settling between them. Maxim reached up, rubbing the back of his neck, his smirk returning, though it was tinged with something more vulnerable now.

“Well, this is awkward,” he said lightly, though his eyes held theirs with a quiet intensity. “I guess we have some catching up to do.” He paused, then added, “You know, if you’re up for it.”

They had time now. The mission was long, the outpost was small, and there was nowhere else to go. For better or worse, they were stuck together. He didn’t know what the future held, but as they sat there in the dimly lit room, their knees touching, he thought that maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t too late after all.
